Screw self-respect, I want a dedicate thread, too! Check out my pal Dominoe, below, a starting character designed as new to the shadows for "On The Run." Kansas City folks might get a kick out of this one.

Can't say I care for the Code View here, but I didn't see any other way to have fixed-width type.

Background
==========
Dominic Hall has lost his way. That's what his family would say, anyway -- his older sister Constance, especially. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Dominic moved to Seattle in the Spring of 2070 to finally escape the future his family had outlined for him… no small task escaping dynastic destiny. Let's start at the beginning.

Dominic was born in Kansas City, Missouri on March 18 in 2049 and issued a SIN like every other newborn arrival at the Crown Arcology Elizabeth Hall Memorial Medical Center. Heir apparent to his family's vast wealth, it was assumed from his birth that he would grow up to replace his father at the helm of Crown Holdings, the corporation his great-great-great-grandfather Joyce Hall founded over a hundred years ago. While a happy child, loved by those around him for his infectious smile, it became quickly apparent that Dominic was not leadership material. He fell behind at his cloistered prep school both academically and athletically, a sin unbearable for the "elite leaders of the future." To compensate for these deficiencies, his father spared no expense in providing natural physical and cerebral augmentation. Over the course of one summer's intermission Dominic transformed from a diamond in the rough to a truly polished "prep school success machine."

While the success was appreciated, Dominic never escaped the specter of his father's disapproval of his inadequate natural abilities. The burden of not really being good enough on his own, or not being giving the chance to be, instilled in him a growing resentment of his family and the role of successor they assumed he would play for them. As a teenager, he sought out ways to get into trouble at the Crown Arcology where he most often lived with his family, sneaking into restricted areas of the sprawling complex with friends or alone and always playing the "innocent lost Chairman's son card" when caught.

Despite his underlying animosity, or perhaps driven by it, he completed prep school and undergraduate studies early. At the age of 20 he defied his father's will and went on to complete a medical degree at the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Dominic chose the Institute because of its reputation as independent enough to ignore his father's subtle yet heavy-handed attempts to thwart admittance. The decision to attend medical school itself was something the family's media handlers worked overtime to spin into a story of a family heir seeking to diversify his background before bringing new and enriched experiences into the boardroom. It was during his time in Maryland that Dominic became a true socialite, attending private parties and discovering the rich world of eastern seaboard clubs. His winning smile and boyish charm matured into dashing good looks and an extensive rolodex of female accompaniment.

But the spin doctors' worst nightmares came true when Dominic passed over offer after offer from prestigious hospitals (arranged, he had no doubt, by his father) and accepted a position at a community trauma center in Seattle. It was his 21st birthday and the significance of the date was not lost on his father who was out of town on business at the time. Perhaps it was indeed time to let the young man find his own way, as he seemed so determined to do. If in the end he truly had no interest at Crown Holdings, then perhaps his sister Constance would rise to the occasion.

Dominic arrived in downtown Seattle a week later after a glut of birthday and going away parties thrown by his many friends, associates, and female companions. Checking into a penthouse suite at the posh Horizon Imperium Hotel in downtown Seattle, Dominic soon got to know the assorted cast of characters that make any large operation like the Imperium run smoothly. His winning smile and hefty tipping quickly endeared him to the hotel staff and management. The twin facts that Crown Holdings is a subsidiary of The Horizon Group and that Dominic is the only son of Crown Holdings' Chairman of the Board didn't hurt matters, either.

The clinic was only minutes away from his hotel, which was one of the reasons "The Imperium," as it was known to cabbies and street folk, was chosen. At the clinic, Dominic found work difficult and demanding. The place serviced mostly traffic accidents, building jumpers, construction injuries, and other typical urban emergencies. Occasionally an EMT team would arrive with gunshot victims or other more dramatic fare, but it all helped to bring home the importance of one thing: the need to live life to its fullest while the chance still awaits.

And that's what Dominic plans to do… live life to its fullest. In Seattle, Dominic has discovered that without the baggage of expectation a person can be anything they want. Do anything they want. It would be here that he would make his fortune. His own fortune, not something passed passively down from one generation to the next. Not something given through entitlement that could just as easily be taken away, but something of his own. Not some vision of a future forced upon him by generations of others willing to accept the burden, but his own future. He liked that idea… his own future. His own life.

And no one would tell him what to do ever again.

Marcus Hall is the chairman of the board of Crown Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Horizon Group specializing in consumer products/services and entertainment such as greeting cards, department stores, and heart-warming trideo and simsense features. The last in a long line of Hall family successors to maintain a majority ownership in what was once Hallmark Corporation, Marcus is the great-great-grandson of Hallmark founder Joyce Hall (Joyce Hall b.1891 > Donald Hall, Sr. b. 1929 > Donald Hall, Jr. b. 1956 > Donald Hall III b. 1989 > Marcus Hall b. 2019). Marcus is married to Evelyn Boyce-Hall, a lawyer specializing in corporate contract disputes, and has two children: Constance Hall (b. 2044), a lawyer specializing in intellectual property rights who resides at the Crown Arcology in Kansas City; and Dominic Hall (b. 2049), a trauma surgeon and the family black sheep who resides at the lofty Horizon Imperium Hotel (known on the street as "The Imperium") in downtown Seattle. When not seeing to corporate affairs at the Crown Arcology or traveling on business, Marcus spends his down time at the family farm home in the Leawood district of Kansas City.

A busy corporate executive, Marcus has had precious little time over the years for family concerns. He and his wife Evelyn have each enjoyed extremely successful high-powered careers that have placed significant strain on their relationships with each other and their children. His daughter, Constance, sought love from her mother by following in her footsteps and becoming a successful lawyer; she seeks acceptance from her father by continuing to reside at the family penthouse atop the Crown Arcology. On the other end of the spectrum, his son sought attention through rebellion and defiance; Dominic has shunned a career among the corporate elite as was preordained for him, instead preferring to forge his own path.

While it's true that Marcus and Dominic rarely talk, and that the subject of Dominic's trust fund is often the topic of conversation on occasions when they do talk, it's also true that each would move heaven and earth if the other were truly in need.

Stan "The Man" Wachowski owns the Horizon Imperium Hotel (known on the street as "The Imperium"). Ok, well, maybe he doesn't own it on paper, but as the hotel's charismatic young doorman it sure seems that way sometimes. Stan is so plugged-into the hotel and its clientele that he is an absolute fixture -- an institution - and one of the hotel's best assets. Older men shake his hand, treat him as the son they wish they had, and tip him handsomely. Older women appreciate his winks, quick compliments, and his unfailing ability to wish them a happy birthday or follow-up with them on some previously-mentioned personal minutia. Stan's incredible people skills have made him one of the most well-connected people in downtown Seattle and the go-to-guy for anything that hotel patrons may need off the books. Stan enjoys a very profitable side business in this capacity.

Stan took an immediate liking to Dominic. In the beginning it probably had something to do with Dominic's flamboyant nature and extravagant tips, but over time the two have become close associates and great friends. It was through Stan's network of back alley contacts that Dominic got his first taste of the shadows - a glimpse of a potentially lucrative future wholly divorced from his family's vast wealth. It was Stan who first anointed Dominic with his street name, "Dominoe," when introducing him to Omar "The Turk."

Knowledge Skills: Business 3, Corporate Policies 3, Corporate Rumors 2, Megacorp Law 4, Personal Trainers 2, Sports 3

Eric Wolf is the Horizon Imperium Hotel's official concierge. A dashing elven presence, Eric keeps the hotel running and the hotel's patrons happy often through sheer force of will alone it seems. Sometimes requests come to him that are above and beyond his abilities (or ethics) to fulfill and this is where Eric's tumultuous relationship with Stan Wachowski, the hotel's doorman, comes into play. Eric often begrudgingly relies on Stan for gossip, items or services that he is unable or unwilling to track down. Opposed to ethical gray areas, Eric would have seen Stan driven off the property years ago if it weren't for Stan's uncanny ability to come through with quick turn-arounds for high-demand patrons.

Dominic has a way of standing out in a crowd, but it was his generous and frequent tips that initially landed him a prominent spot on Eric's "Patrons to Keep Happy" list.

Michelangelo is the manager and head bartender at the upscale Twilight, located on the first floor of the Horizon Imperium Hotel. You'd be surprised at what you can overhear in a joint like Twilight, but you'd be even more surprised at what sloshed corporate executives are willing to brag about to their bartender. If there's a hot rumor floating around, you can bet that it's found its way into Michelangelo's ear.

Michelangelo has observed that Dominic, a Twilight regular, spends more time in the bar than in his own penthouse… and it's true.

Omar "The Turk" is a close friend of Stan Wachowski, the Horizon Imperium Hotel's doorman, and is Stan's main source for moving ill-gotten gains. A regular at just about every downtown hotspot, Omar can be found holding court at Twilight at his usual back corner table most Wednesdays. Omar is rumored to be loosely connected to Seattle organized crime figure Blue Lou Boyle.

Not really what you're looking for here, but...did you hand-format that, or is it output from a generator? I ask mainly because of the page numbers. If it's coming out of a tool, it's pretty sharp smile.gif

Connections 6 for a hotel doorman seems a little high, even if he's an ace fixer.

It does seem excessive, but that's the book's description of a fixer/fence with international ties:
  1. Knows very few people and has practically no social influence. Many are useful only for their Knowledge skills. Examples: squatter, manual laborer, academic graduate assistant.
  2. Knows some people but doesn’t have a lot of personal pull. Examples: gang member, bartender, mechanic, mob soldier, corner hustler, corporate wageslave.
  3. Meets people on a regular basis and has some personal pull. Examples: beat cop, private investigator, street doc, corporate secretary, club owner, street-level fixer or fence.
  4. Knows many people or may be in a leadership position. Examples: gang boss, mob lieutenant, police detective or sergeant, corporate middle manager, low-level Mr. Johnson, fixer or fence with regional ties.
  5. Knows lots of people over a larger area, or holds a senior leadership position: police captain, corporate division manager, high-level Mr. Johnson, fixer or fence with national ties.
  6. Well-connected individual who knows people all over the world, or holds a key executive position. Examples: mob boss, corporate executive, Mr. Johnson or fixer or fence with international ties.
Stan's background mentions how important he is to the hotel and its patrons. I guess I really wanted to emphasize that. =)

It comes out of an Excel spreadsheet tool I'm working on. I had to convert the tabs to spaces manually for this post. Boo! =( It's a shame the Dumpshock CODE tag produces such an oddball color for output.

I guess I owe the lack of significant criticism for this character to the low number of readers for this thread. LOL

I expected an argument about taking Dodge vs Gymnastics, but alas! =)

OMFG you noob. ROFL. Take gymnsatcis, ti is teh 1337!

Since I saw that you actually have a character concept and a realistic one, along with realistic stats and realistic abilities, I feel seduced to not give you any advice on how to make the character more effective, because it could break the concept.
I mean, you've chosen Extraordinary Charisma and do not even take advantage of it, I fear you chose it because it fits your character, while it does not fit to give him a moviestar-like-charisma-rating!
R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

My group consists of 6 other players. 4 have no character background at all. They have numbers. One of them once said that the character is defined through the numbers. I do not feel sorry for making fun of him the whole evening for it.
The other two players have a background for their characters, but ignore it.

Man, don't you feel an overcoming urge to move to berlin, learn german and run in my group?

Actually, I'll add one more thing, sure. Given that he has a medical degree and his day job is at a clinic, you might want to spread some more points in that direction. I don't mean increasing his First Aid, so much as buying other supporting skills. Bump the biology, maybe. Add some other medical-related knowledge skills. That sort of thing.

I just want the record to show that I did not intentionally seduce UndeadPoet. =)

Also, I felt that the Enhanced Attribute: Charisma would allow for growth in his primary area of usefulness. Didn't seem wise to limit him by not taking it at character creation.

I don't mean increasing his First Aid, so much as buying other supporting skills. Bump the biology, maybe. Add some other medical-related knowledge skills. That sort of thing.

I agree with this assessment. I think my desire for his skills to reflect the playboy lifestyle trumped his ancillary medical skills. Although I guess Biology covers all medical skills to some degree, and that was probably my reasoning at the time. I really wanted him to be able to pilot pleasure crafts, at least recreationally. What would some suggested additional medical knowledge skills be?

Examples:
  • Emergency Room Procedures (definately not a Biology specialization)
  • Hospital Politics
Although it's also probably true that a first-time emergency room newbie that this sort of knowledge would in fact be quite limited.

Definitely need to bump Biology, perhaps to 5 to mirror the book's Knowledge skill example for a master's degree. Not sure where to steal the points from, though.

Suggestions?
Nim
Something about pharmacology? You've got Street Drugs on there, but if he went through medical school he should have a pretty extensive knowledge of standard legal drugs, also.

Emergency Room Procedures might be more specific than you need. Maybe Hospital Procedures? Could specialize in Emergency Room. He'd have gone through a residency in a hospital, though, and have a good idea of how things work in an ordinary hospital ward as well as the ER.

Also, I felt that the Enhanced Attribute: Charisma would allow for growth in his primary area of usefulness. Didn't seem wise to limit him by not taking it at character creation.

From this effectiveness-oriented-perspective, you could just have maxed it to 7... More effective than to start with an over-average attribute and max it later on.

Also, get a Sakura Fubuki with shocker ammunition, just a small advice... From the effectiveness-orientived-perspective. Short bursts for 8S damage, along with the shocker-effect and halved impact armor.

Give me some more points and I'll max it at 7. =) LOL

At least this way there's a clear character growth path.

So, back when you asked this, I didn't have my book handy. Flipping through it last night looking for something else, I was reading First Aid and was suddenly reminded smile.gif

Okay. Reading through all the skills again, I think an MD who worked in a hospital would minimally have:

* Medicine 3
* AcKn - Chemistry (Pharmaceuticals) 2 (+2)
* AcKn - Biology 3
* Etiquette (Hospital) 2 (+2)
* Cybertechnology 1

Beyond that:
* An experienced surgeon would also have Leadership.
* A doctor in a teaching hospital would have Instruction.
* An ER doc would also have First Aid.
* Awakened doctors would have several levels in Assensing (Aura Reading)

Ok well this comment is probably going to bite me on the butt simply because I'm too lazy to get up and walk 30m to my book and back to check but I think you missed something and I hope you have resources left to pay for it smile.gif

Namely you forgot the OS for your comlink. Also just wondering why you got goggles with a smartlink when the dude has it as cyber?

Boy, those are all good. Will have to have a come-to-jesus moment to reconcile what I will do to bring him more in line with this. The points are really, really scarce. Grumble. =(

Gack! No OS?! Son of a... Heh. Minor technicality. =) That was just put in there to see if anyone would actually READ the thing. Yeah, that's the ticket... =)

Hmm. The goggles thing is a very good question. Will review.

Thanks, guys! =)

As a gm I would not allow two contacts with a connection 6 - except for quite reasonnable character as yours !

have fun with him (and, actually, you shouldn't take exceptionnal charisma if you keep it at 5 during creation) !

This has been mentioned before, so perhaps I should reconsider this. Would certainly save some points. I just wanted to build the groundwork for the future, since he won't be able to ever exceed the maximum if I don't get that quality at creation. Does anyone out there agree with this approach?

Hmm. Well, you could drop Street Drugs; the Chemistry specialization would help cover some of the same stuff, just from a different perspective. Your highest active skill is Infiltration, at 4, which surprised me. I'm not sure where that fits in with the rest. But you could perhaps drop a point or two there. Could drop Edge from 4 to 3. Hmm.

You're absolutely right. This "dedicated thread peer review" thing is great at pointing out my hidden desire to power game. lol

I'll drop Infiltration down to something more reasonable to reflect his youthful activities. Let's call it a two.

I'm leaning toward losing the Exceptional Attribute quality altogether, which by itself would provide 20 BP. Holy moly! That may well provide the answer to all these issues you guys have brought up. Will provide cash for the OS, allow me to get more clinical skills, and resolve the oddity of the Exceptional Attribute quality without the actual exceptional attribute to go along with it. =)

Thoughts?

Background
==========
Dominic Hall has lost his way. That's what his family would say, anyway -- his older sister Constance, especially. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Dominic moved to Denver in the Spring of 2070 to finally escape the future his family had outlined for him... no small task escaping dynastic destiny. Let's start at the beginning.

Dominic was born in Kansas City, Missouri on March 18 in 2049 and issued a SIN like every other newborn arrival at the Crown Arcology's Elizabeth Hall Memorial Medical Center.

But the spin doctors' worst nightmares came true when Dominic passed over offer after offer from prestigious hospitals (arranged, he had no doubt, by his father) and accepted a position at a community trauma center in Denver.

Dominic arrived in downtown Denver a week later after a glut of birthday and going away parties thrown by his many friends, associates, and female companions. Checking into a penthouse suite at the posh Horizon Imperium Hotel in downtown Denver, Dominic soon got to know the assorted cast of characters that make any large operation like the Imperium run smoothly.

And that's what Dominic plans to do... live life to its fullest. In Denver, Dominic has discovered that without the baggage of expectation a person can be anything they want. He liked that idea... his own future. His own life.

And no one would tell him what to do ever again.

Stan's incredible people skills have made him one of the most well-connected people in downtown Denver and the go-to-guy for anything that hotel patrons may need off the books.

Michelangelo has observed that Dominic, a Twilight regular, spends more time in the bar than in his own penthouse... and it's true.

Omar is rumored to be connected to the Chavez crime family.

Casey Jones is a trauma surgeon who works at the DocWagon Community Trauma Center with Dominic. Affable but (seemingly) immune to Dominic's charms, Casey hides a dark secret: she's addicted to painkillers and frequently makes off with some of the clinic's stock. A former lover, also an addict, has recently begun extorting drug supplies and information out of Casey in exchange for keeping her secret quiet. She doesn't know what to do and it becoming increasingly desperate.

Tabby Morgan is an associate of Omar the Turk and a fixture in the Denver corporate running community, detailed in Welcome to Denver and presented here again for convenience...

Tabby is a changeling human female, 5'6" (1.7m) who weighs in at 135 lbs (62 kg). Athletic and furry are two of the first words to come to mind when describing her. She has tawny two toned fur and cat slit eyes.

She worked as a face for a shadowrun team until Halley's comet made its last pass. With SURGE came a need to re-invent herself. She shortened her name to Tabby and built up a network of runners.Now she tracks the various favors that she owes and is owed among the Denver shadow community.

On the surface, she's playful and to the point. It's said that Tabby believes that she has the nine lives of a cat. Four of them have been used, but she has five to go. Underneath, is a woman who had her sense of self-identity stripped away from her by a random surge of ambient mana.

Specializing in Corporate politics, Tabby tries to avoid dealing directly with the syndicates whenever possible. She is based primarilyin the CAS sector and does occasional work in the Hub or outlying sectors of Denver when a favor is called in from her associates.
