Thanks for heads up. The fact is, I am just about the most computer-inept human on the planet. I don't even own a computer. My friends can't believe I am getting into this hobby. But I love Shadowrun more than I can say, and my situation is just not conducive to table-top. (But even if it was I don't think I could give this up.)
Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I really don't understand what you just told me. But please don't trouble yourself further - I will muddle through.

it would be hard for a lawyer to prove he lacked mens rea (intent to commit) if he's caught. While ignorance of the law is no excuse...you better believe having knowledge will get you screwed.

Ok, As the background is ok, here's a character sheet for ya...
Again, DON'T READ if you are a player in this game. Unless somebody else is based in London and wants to know a broadway starlet at start of play?
[ Spoiler ]
I do character sheets in terms of points spent, from the sound of things you wanted build points for starting gear to be spent rater than build points for start of play, am I right?
Any chance I can switch out con for intimidation in the skill group, it makes more sense for my character to be ok at intimidation, but excellent at con(impersonation). Also all the stuff in the SG then would be learned together as a "side effect" of acting training.

4/3 Father. Alec Spiros is kind of ashamed of me, and while he is not after my getting killed, he is not as close as a family could be. He is big on the pirate scene in Europe. He is the young brother of a family of three, the eldest, his brother Orvald, is retired, and his elder sister died at sea when he was young. Heavily cybered he boasts that he is old as his tounge, and 20 years older than his teeth.
1/6 Mother. Sarthiel Spiros. Doting mother, proud of me, but under Alec's Thumb, and unable to help me as much as she would want to. She is a low level mage, perhaps magic 2, she lost a lot of magic potential as she had cyberwork done before she awakened.
3/4 Brother Mateo Spiros, Striking out as a semi-independant pirate, Very Strong, Cybered to the nines, bloodthirsty, but kind of ashamed of his "squishy" sister. Mateo is heir to the Spiros piracy empire, and practices hard.
2/5 Brother Talos Spiros, Working for Mateo as his decker/money launderer, slightly less close to Electra since he tried to do some creative accounting with her cashflow, and she pimp slapped him for it. Still they keep in touch, he used to do her taxes until the laundering incident, and now is working hard to regain her trust. Talos is also an accomplished boat rigger.
2/5 Uncle Orvald Spiros, Alec's Eldest brother. Retired Pirate, Tough as nails, mean as a rattler, but dotes on his niece who done good. Used to live with him. His and kiera' children died in a ship to ship battle durign the Euro wars of the coast of Crete, and since then they have been land locked.
2/5 Aunt Kiera Spiros, Retired Pirate, still keeps her knives sharp. While Orvald is living the high life, she keeps in trim, and still has black combat cyberware installled. Used to live with her.
2/5 Boyfriend, Trevor Brown. A big satyr rugby player who can't believe his luck. Electra met him after the crash, and was impressed with his happy go lucky view on life, and his great prowess err... 'on the field'. Trevor is a gentle giant, and off the field he likes to watch plays and eat at fine restraunts, at least when he can't convince Electra to cook.
4/2 Talent Agent, Sara Smallman (human). After declining a few too many inappropriate advances, Electra decided to go for a female agent. Sara works hard for Electra, but as the biggest female talent agent in the UK, she has not that much time to socialise with her.
1/6 Rachel Frost, Sara's Best friend from school, While Electra hit the stage, Rachel became a minor cube corp. They are always meeting up for drinks/going out on the town. Electra acts somewhat wild and Rachel keeps her grounded.
1/3 Joe Johanson, Dwarf, and Head of Electra's fan club. Computer geek, Sara dosen't really know him, but tolerates his flowers and so forth as he also gets her a lot of free publicity. Also she keeps vaguely in touch as sometimes she can convince him to keep some of the more embarrassing parts of her private life from the public eye.
3/1 Fernandez Depp, often plays opposite Electra, most recently in "Pirates of the Carribean." On the stage they can keep sparks of sexual tension flying between themselves, and they are "officially" dating according to her fanclub, but in reality Fernandes pefers the company of his boyfriend when out of the public eye. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement as neither Electra, nor Trevor want to be seen to be dating, Trevor does not want the attention, and Electra finds the publicity from "dating" Fernandez to be good for her career.

Youīre probably right, but you donīt have to tell the cops you where a lawyer, do you? Off cause a lawyer would use other tactics to prevent persecution, then faking ignorance, which as you stated is a weak defense anyway.
@ Ankle Biter
My character was born in London. I donīt know where to put his headquaters, yet (probably in the UCAS, though) but he will still have contacts there and is active internationally, anyway. So if your starlet has much money (or powerfull friends) and was in need of some law consultant (maybe to get out of an old contract), they might have met each other before. Still if you like to form a conection, Iīd suggest you post some introduction for me about your pc and the situation she needed help with, and Iīd in turn post a description of my pc for you, then we could see how good they would plausibly know each other and exchange info accordingly.

Jack, I would politely remind you, it is NEVER the defendant's responsiblity to prove or disprove any elements of the crime. Its always the responsibility of the prosecutor to prove the elements, including the mens rea.
Most crimes that runners commit though aren't going to be difficult to prove mens rea. It's hard to convince a jury "Oh, I thought I'd received an invitation to enter into the top secret lab and persue the research data." or "The alleged victim gave me persmission to commit the multiple assaults."
Remember, when presenting a case to a jury, actions speak louder than words. Which is why the rules of evidence are so dam wonderful!!!
JackRipper
Jul 11 2006, 07:55 PM
All that being true, a jury can be swayed (there is generally no love loss on Lawyers anyways) by the prosecuter easily in the case of a lawyer. An expert of the law isnt just breaking it during a crime ad hoc....he has expert knowledge and can arguably be breaking it with malice if just not pure intent.
Also, you'd be lucky in game to be prosecuted by Government court. Corporate law from what i've read is draconian (or in the case of Sauder Krupp...its dragon) YUK YUK

To give you some idea of how I intend to handle so many players,
A) Every game I have seen on this board has suffered about 25-50% attrition, with those games at the high end of that range just dying out.
B) Some people may die.
C) Even if no one leaves the game, I have plans to sort of form two teams and run both.
So no one worry about being on a ten person team and not getting to do anything. Ooops, did I say ten? I really wish I could make it fifteen. Depending on how time-consuming this turns out to still be in three months from now....
For the statistic-conscious, of the 12 submissions above, I have
7 males
5 females
2 humans
2 orks
2 trolls
and
6 elves
That is not intended to steer anyone toward or away from certain genders or metatypes. I am not a person who insists on every team having one dwarf rigger, one troll adept, one human hacker, one elf mage, and one ork sammie. I am more for teams coalescing based on interesting role-playing possibilities than profession, and heck, half the submissions I have received don't fit any shadowrunner archetype anyway - which is the point.
The stats are just for fun.
I very much look forward to submissions through Saturday night (my time).

[ Spoiler ]
They are Greek pirates, yo ho yer majesty. My character is 19 at start of play, and the charge would only fesably happened clost to post crash 2 area, 63 onwards. At the time she would be in the middle of a career playing plucky sidekicks at the west end.
Of course my family may have heard you were a good lawyer, and shanghied you, they are kind of used to getting what they want...
As for payment, it would have been a good publicity case, and Electra (my character) is an astounding socialite, she would have had the jury in the palm of her hand in minutes. She would also have been very appologetic about your shanghighing, and insisted the family pay you a fair rate for your services, alas not a lawyer rate, just a fair one. Sound interesting?

Sounds cool to me, though Iīd prefer it with a twist.
[ Spoiler ]
As a high profile lawyer, John would have been in the situation to funktion as a Mr. Johnson for a client more then once. Usually he would go through a Fixer or even multiple ones, but when the sitiuation asked for extrem discretion beyond the norm, he would beet shadowy people in person. In 63 one possibility would have been, that your pirates stole something of particular worth for Novatech. John would have been send to retrive it and as the meeting coincided with your characters troubles, her family asked for assistence in return for the item (or maybe person).
Another posibillity would be, that the greek pirates know some scotsh pirates, whose clansmen have conections to the british aristocracy. Through these channels they could have gained access to John, who might have helped the pirates in return for a future favour.
In any case, we could (probably should) both know the same contact or two contacts, that know each other.
On a general note. John usually dos not apear at court himself, but instead is more of the brains behind the scenes in his corporation. He is the paragraphe nerd who whispers into the front-manīs or -girlīs ear. Heīs quiet a good talker as well, of cours, but he likes to stay in the background.

ES Sparky - the game will start in 2070. The start dates will be staggered quite a bit because different players' events will require longer to resolve in game time (though I hope for them to be comparable in real time).
And Ankle Biter/MK Ultra - please keep in mind that with the game starting in 2070, and Elektra 19 or 20 at that time, talking about being in mid-career and/or meeting MK around the time of the Crash (2064) will have you just barely pubescent. I would suggest bringing those dates up slightly.

Jul 15 2006, 09:45 PM
Okey dokey - it's now a bit past 10 pm Saturday night London time, which was the deadline I set.
So submissions are now closed.
But that may not matter so much, because no new ones have come in since the initial flood during the first half of the week. Maybe my post listing the twelve applicants to that point scared everyone off.
That post was July 12 at 10:24 if you want to refer back to it. Because that's the final admission list. So although I was a bit disappointed that a few of the ideas that had been floated never got turned in, at least I didn't have to make any hard choices....except one....
You may recall my plan to over-recruit, and if by some miracle no one dropped out, maneuver you all into two teams. Well, the more I thought about the possibilities of running two teams during the same game-time in the same city, the more cool ideas came to mind.
That plus the surprising fact that each and every submission I received was truly freaking outstanding led me to the decision to expand recruitment to 12.
But anyway, before we launch into all that talk about teams, we have 12 mini-campaigns to run.
Here are some deadlines I am setting myself. I will PROBABLY beat these deadlines, posting earlier, but I really like to keep my commitments, so I set deadlines you can count on.
OOC thread will start Wednesday the 19th at the latest.
The first week will be final details, carving your character stats in stone, last chance to have some say about how we drive you into the shadows (some people have offered great ideas, some have left it to me - either way okay, whichever will be more fun for you). Also during that first week my posts will be more limited than usual because of some real world crap. I will always let you know when that happens, by the way.
IC thread to start Wednesday the 26th at the latest.
I will tell you right now, it won't be all at once. I will be starting four players off a week over three weeks (again, the conservative estimate - it could be much faster). That will help me keep my head straight, and give me time to do each story justice, as the initial posts are the most crucial.
The first OOC thread will be long and contain lots of ground rules for how things will work.
I am really looking forward to the opportunity to serve as your gamemaster. I promise I will make every effort to make it a rewarding experience for all.

How will the pre-event stuff be held? Same IC thread or individual threads?
BlueRondo
Jul 15 2006, 11:38 PM
I think individual threads would unnecessarily clutter up the board, but having twelve stories in a single thread might also be a bit confusing. Perhaps a new thread for each four-character "batch" would be a fair compromise.
Also, to Adamu, I'd like to say thanks for including me. I've never played a Shadowrun game before, and perhaps a game led by a self-proclaimed "demanding and anal GM" is not the ideal place for a rookie. To me, however, "demanding and anal" sounds like high quality standards, and I look forward to playing a high quality game (and, I hope, not dying too early in the process.)
To the players, out of curiosity, would anyone like to introduce his or her character?

Konsaki and Blue Rondo - I think Blue Rondo's idea is good, I will post an IC thread for each of the three 'waves' for the first stage of the game, though they will eventually have to merge or people will have to jump to different threads.
Abbandon - thanks for reposting the final list. I have not attached character names because everyone is basically in a transition between citizen names and street names. And I prefer not to pigeonhole professional classifications. But you guys should talk about yourselves all you want, of course.

Okay, this will probably not be my first cry for computer help, but -
How do I stick the little blue OoC icon on the title for the new thread?
