QUOTE (Adam Selene) | Cross Applied Tech: The ONLY non-cliche megacorp is gone. Now all we have are your standard Japanese Zaibatsu, heartless American megacorps, and German masters of industry. And Aztechnology, but they're fairly unique, being state-owned (or owning the state, but honestly, what's the difference?) |
that's not quite accurate. Wuxing is certainly not a Japanese Zaibatsu, and Yamatetsu breaks every Japanacorp stereotype on record (including the one about being based in Japan).
|
Complaining that megacorps are heartless is so pointless. Besides, every megacorp is heartless, per definition. And what mfb said.

I think you're either confused and mixing things up or you simply haven't read SR4 and are just spouting second hand knowledge. |
He has already confirmed that he is only repeating [incorrect] secondhand knowledge. It sounds more like he is paraphrasing things he's heard in a kind of a Broken Telephone game and getting things backwards from there.

Or at least that's the way I've been instructed by those who do possess the book. |

So... he's your bad twin, sort of? |
Ignorant cousin, actually. It's just that, well, my own opinions of the setting are actually based on reading the books.

He's new to DS and will soon realize that you're his hero.

You know, the cooler, older cousin who lives in his own aparment, gets all the chicks, drives a cool car. That hero.

About "slash deckers": In SR3, for good or ill, all you needed to be a solid decker was a Computer skill of 6 and a decent deck. The rest of your skills could be in combat, in rigging, in social tricks, or even magic; that was it.
Under the new system, a decent decker needs at least four different skills to do the same thing: Computer, Data search, Cybercombat, and Hacking. Given the new skill caps, you can't have more than two of those at five or better; the optimum build would be two at five and two at four, or one at six and the rest at four. So, not only does it cost you four times as much to be a decent decker, it also costs you the opportunity to be really good at anything else.
As for the rest: Adam is correct, the world and rules are mediocre attempts at a reboot; not innovative or original enough to be something special, but putting up enough differences to provide lip service. "Ultimate Shadowrun" would have been fun to see, but this is a wallpapepring. Shadowrun sales were always strong, even in the slump; they could have released SR4 as d20 and expected strong sales, just because Shadowrun has always been a top seller.
Some people here are going to try and moan that this has been "disproven", but unfortunately, they tend to provide ad hominem fallacies instead of logic to support their arguments. I'll let that demonstrate itself; however, it should be no surprise. This *is* Dumpshock, after all.

That claim would have looked more impressive if it was backed by actual data with reference.
On the other hand, I would never have classes shadowrun sales as 'strong' - there are more popular systems out there.

Maybe, maybe not - until it happens, all you can do is assume and predict.
Starwars would be an interesting example for a system with a transition from D6 to D20 - any sales data on that one?

Cain--I'd say that you actually needed a Computer Skill of 6, a decent deck, a slew of programs and probably a programming suite, 2 pieces of cyberware, a handful of System knowledge skills, Etiquette: Matrix, and lastly the Data Search skill.
Once you've done all that, then yes, the rest of your gear and karma can be spent towards rounding out your character.
Yes, the skill caps mean that you can only start with 2 skills at 5 or 1 skill at 6, but those caps have also redefined the role. A skill of 6 is now equivalent to a skill of 9 before.
I am consistently forced to ask myself why there is a consistent diatribe attempting to destroy a game that you have said that you have no desire to continue to play. We at dumpshock understand that you dislike the new rules system and believe that the "Evil Bastards" back at the home office ruined the game just so that they could make a fast buck.
Your posts in other threads as well as this one, demonstrate clearly that you are more interested in demonstrating the broken rules, than discussing the balance of the system. Things change, move on and focus on the discussion rather than your vehement disatisfaction.

Quick note... Any SR3 vs SR4 firefights end now, before they really get started.
It's all been said and done before. Anyone really feels like they need to review opinions, there's the Search function. Have at it.
