Full Version: Orxploitation and racial slurs

Eryk the Red
I'm working on writing an adventure that will involve the star of several Orxploitation films, and I figure I need to try to get the culture of this stuff right. Obviously, it's meant to parallel the Blaxploitation genre of the 1970s. And one common characteristic of those films was the black lead calling white folks "honkies". So I'm trying to figure out the sort of language that would get used in Orxploitation. I need some good racial slurs for him to use. Keeb and dandelion eater just don't flow right the way honkey does, especially given the "tough-guy from the ghetto" themes of these characters. Also, I don't know of any racial slurs that are used for plain old humans. Anyone got any ideas?
Shrike30
"Breeders" is classic for humans (and ironic, considering the reproductive rate of orks).
JonathanC
I think "breeder" is kind of outdated..."smoothie" is the slur of choice for people who aren't orks/trolls.
Eryk the Red
Smoothie's good, I think that'll get some use. Know of any other elf-specific ones? I picture elves being portrayed in these movies as snobbish mages, who are generally lackeys for the rich white guy (the Man), and they are generally wimps. Taken down by one punch from our hero.
Ancient History

nezumi
Elves are Keebs or keeblers, also 'dandelion-munchers'. I'm sure they get a lot of homophobic slang their way too, just by virtue of having an effeminate body structure.
Lagomorph
You could call elves "dandies", short for dandelion eater.

Playing an Ork, I came up with this handy set of phrases that Orks might say:

Good ta see ya, alang. Haven’t in some time.
Oh, yeah? Well, buunda to you, too, pal!
Me and my cerri are going to visit our parents.
Always living in the street? That’s a hard djoto.
With that last run, I’m really living the djoto.
A transgression like killing his sister is punishable only in kind, by drundeah.
Want to come around the corner, to pull out my Luger, and to BAM, drundeah that slot.
That drek Marco is the big egrand around here, he has a piece of all the action.
My older brother was always the best egrand for me, even though he wasn’t an ork, he always saved my ass.
Let’s go see Rhumba, that egrand’rohodo on the east side, he’s got the best joytoys.
Yeah, Helena’s egrand’rohodo totally caught us slotting in their house. She isn’t even allowed to go to school right now.
I love this place- I think I’ll settle down and make an ereth.
We finally got a nice little piece of ereth’cerri to defend from those Ancients slitches.
Drek! Look at that elf, she’s eunabo, I’m gonna go chat her up.
I know, that car’s the eunabo of street racers.
The azzies are up to another public fahd, hear they’re slicing some dwarves this time.
And you betray me like this? After all the fahds I’ve made for you?
Yep, the fixer’s got a gig for six gloks, you in?
Hell yeah, I’m down to grumog and smash some soft heads.
Think you got the hez to shoot me?
Look how long that guy’s hez are! How does he eat?
I drank beer, wine and that Salish Firewater, that’s way too much hurlg, and I’m paying for it now.
I got my norgoz in my hip holster, and my other in the small of my back.
He can’t even spell, his quaalz is staggering.
Me n’ Heather had great rohodo last night- I’m exhausted but happy.
Skraa, guys, what’s up?
We went to find him where he fell in the alley, but he was already tharon.
Renraku AND Neonet? You mean this drek is tharon owned?
He’s a turgma, he let them know all about us!
Sure, we take ujnort, humans, elves, whatever.
Yeah, we dated for about a year for she agreed to be my vruken.
Yeah, we dated for about a year for he agreed to be my vrukart.
That is a huge load of vut.
There’s going to be a huge wejoto tonight, we will kill all the guards and break free!
How much yerz we getting for the job?
Hey, he shot at me, that means zakhan for life… or till death

And of couse the actual translation:

alang chummer
buunda Expletive, often accompanied by an obscene gesture (i.e. the finger).

Beats ghoul slang I suppose:

Human - Food
Elf - Food
Ork - Food
Dwarf - Snack
Troll - Banquet

It just lacks subtlety.

With racial slurs you usually are trying to be slick.

I knew a guy who called mexicans loosenecks because that company that made mexican jumping beans in CHEAP packages. It was of course based out of Mexico so that made it worse.

See you dont want it to be N word direct unless your trying to start a fight or make someone cry.

Or a little of both. I once heard a reporter tell a story about how he saw a cameraman open a can of whoop-ass on a redneck in Mississippi (after putting down the camera, of course) for using that word on him. And really, if you can't get away with that in the deep south, where *can* you get away with it? Other than the Internet, of course.

Not as common as people think. I've never used the word as part of normal conversation, and neither have any of my "black" friends. It's kept alive by rappers and people who want to emulate them, for the most part. Or, as a friend of mine is fond of saying, "A black guy who calls me that is getting a lecture; a white guy who calls me that is getting his ass kicked".

you're in the minority (heh), JonathanC, at least in the parts of the world i've seen. rappers and people who want to emulate them are pretty common.

Horridly off-topic, I know, but I'm bi-racial and I tend to say n*gger all the time as either a term of endearment or as an exclamation, particularly after beer. Would I get my ass kicked or get a lecture? I'm guessing both at the same time.

I think that n*gger is the only derogatory racial slur that has been co-opted by the race it originally referred to. I can't think of a single other racial slur that was welcomed by those it was used to debase.

As far as offensiveness goes, it really, really, really depends on who you're hanging out with. Most of the black guys I hung out with in college (in Southern California) could give a squirt of flaming camel piss if you say n*gger. Some of the blacks guys I hung out with in college got visibly upset at the word "wigger" or even the sylable "nig" when used in other words. I think the bottom line is that the word is astronomically offensive to a small group of people, and unless you're certain that everyone listening is not a member fo that group, it's not okay to say "n*gger". But as someone who is not offended at the word, I don't really know if I have a say.

So trolls don't call each other trogs dwarves don't call each other halfers.

I wouldn't say I'm "white collar". About middle class, college graduate. I'm just saying that I don't hear it that often from people I know or went to school with. I think the popularity of the word is generally overstated by people.

it's been pretty common among blacks everywhere i've lived. school, college, military, work, etcetera. i'm not going to say my experience is more representative of the norm than yours, but that is my experience.

I don't think I've ever heard it at the office. I hear it fairly regularly at home, though (not counting when it's blaring out of the speakers of some guy who spent too much on his Honda Civic). Can't say I live in an especially nice neighborhood, though.

There. Fixed.

Now you can continue with this discussion about nigger. And please, for the love of God, stop half-assed censoring the word. You look like idiots. This is why rational people can't have academic debates about it without someone (almost invariably a white someone) jumping their shit, in many ways proving their own racism by suggesting that people can't discuss it because blacks might not be able to figure out the difference between discussion and insults.

You should actually blame Richard Prior. He started the black guys calling each other that word. Then after he went to Africa "to find his roots" he realized it was just as bad for blacks to call each other that. But by then blacks calling each other that was engrained in our culture. Its gotten more public because of the loose rules on media now and white kids emulating blacks. Mostly the rise and final acceptence of rap music by the masses. Rap music basically started in the early 80's but didnt get really popular till the mid 90's. Sure Dave Chapelle has spurred it on a lot since he was on a wildly popular show, but the person who got the ball rolling was Richard Prior.

And SL I dont use that word, especially in a public forum for one major reason. The people that cmplain about rascism most times are the ones that cant tell the difference between a discussion and insult. ANd I know people here use their company computers to access the site.

Case in point. There was an accountant for the city I live in he used the word niggardly to describe the city budget and the people that control it. My city is approximately 60% black, the majority of councilmen seats and other high ranking offices are held by blacks and most city jobs are held by blacks. This guy was a white guy in an office full of blacks. He knew thw word, and they didnt. The people in his office then in the government raised such a fuss about him being a racist that he resigned from his job and made a public appology for a word that has no racial ties. The people calling for his head were so wrapped in a white guy using the word niggardly which does sound like other word they never bothered to look it up. Even with the news stations showing the word was not racial he still resigned because the people in his office said he still shouldnt have used that word because it sounde racist.

Now since then they have created a zero tolerance policy, Any racial slur will be grounds for termination of your job in a city office.

Since then a really nasty racial joke floating around degrading blacks on the city government computer network was causing a huge stink. Made the nightly news. Well after about a weeek they traced it back to the original sender of the joke. Turns out it was a black guy. He said he dont understand why everyone was so upset its only a joke. Now the week before the city council woman, the leader, said she wasnt going to tolerate racial jokes flying around on city computers and was going to fire the person who started it. A week later it turns out to be a black guy and she says it was just a joke, one in bad taste, but a joke none the less, theres no need to persue it any further.

Watching the nightly news here you can see an obvious double standard of racial rules. So, to protect any people that may be attacked by this obvious bullshit in my city I dont give them (them as in the blatant racist blacks that run the city I live in) any ammo to hurt non blacks over misunderstands and their ignorance.

I dont live in Washington, so I guess the world is really filled with idiots.

I just preferre not to give them ammo. I can find much better and more truthful ways to degrade someone. I dont need to use a broadly racial slur. Especialy since race has nothing to do with the person in question. Calling a black guy that word to insult him is just unimaginitize and it makes it out like you are insulting an entire race based on the actions of a few.

And truthfully if this was a private forum I wouldnt change my speech either, only because I would know the people involved in the discourse would be of the type of person that wouldnt misinterpret what the conversation was about. I have used the word in front of other blacks that I knew would understand the use in a sentence not as a direct insult to them or an insult at all. I have used many racial slurs in front of the people that they were degrading, but only to the people I knew the use was not an insult because of the conversation we were having.

Some blacks have gotten made at me becasue I use the word black to describe them and not african-american. You just cant please some people.

Richard Pryor did not invent or even popularize the use of that word among African-Americans....for crissakes, read a history book. Black people started using the word around the same time white people did....during Slavery.
Frag-o Delux
I didnt say he invented the word. I said he popularized it. And it wasnt I, it was popculture historians.

And I like to see a history book that describes the use of that word and who used it when.

The history of the word as I know it, is that word didnt become a derogatory term till around the time of the civil rights movement started. Many books and products on the market commonly used that word. So yes, I suppose slaves did use the word. But in the context of the discussion we are talking about now Richard Prior popularized that racial slur as a common greeting and euphemism.

And since we are spitting hairs, crissake isnt a word and the proper use of an ellipsis is three periods, not 4.

EDIT: Oh, Prior generally used an 'a' at the end instead of the 'er' to distinguish between what he considered blacks/african-americans and what whites meant when they said that word.

It's not splitting hairs. The word "nigger" was quite popular, and part of regular American english, a long time before Richard Pryor was even a thought.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style...hap1/nigger.htm

It was commonly used to refer to blacks, and was in fact the "standard" way to address black people for decades. The way people use "nigga" now is the way people used to use "nigger". That's precisely why the word is a taboo now; it is associated with a time when African Americans were subject to a variety of atrocities and injustices that I don't really need to detail here. People associate the term with Richard Pryor now because the pop culture critics you see in mass media don't have the academic credibility of Paris Hilton, and can't be bothered to do proper research.
