Just what is it about Nyx Smith's books about Striper that you object to? Is your dislike merely limited to Striper: Assassin, or does it extend to Who Hunts the Hunter as well? Is your ire directed mainly towards the Striper books by Nyx Smith, or do you also include Fade To Black and Steel Rain on your hate list? |
Bored today, hm?
Best post I read today, take a laugh point.
*ranting*
Every novel with Striper. Crappy writing and a main character that caused so much harm in so many campaigns ("I want to play a shifter. They are sentinent, read the books of Striper!"). Great work, really.

That I understand. Striper Assassin for instance. I hated the book, but the idea of the assassin that didn't really know what was going on and the (I assume) shadow spirit and the soulwell or whatever were interesting. |
Indeed. Even though the book saddens me, there have already been a couple good flavor things that I've yoinked - in particular, the descriptions of IDs.

Oooh ooh! I want to answer this one.
The book reminds me of every bad SR campaign I've seen, heard of, or been in.
The uber powerful main character. She's slinky, she's sexy, she's cooler than you'll ever be, she's a cat. Woooooo.
In fact, pretty much every character suffers from INFI-COOL syndrome. No one's just a guy. Everyone is some super smooth, mega mysterious, or perfectly plotted.
The massively overdramatic tone. I mean, at least twice, I've found myself unable to read a sentence without giggling a little. I can stop in the middle, pick the most overblown ending to the sentence, and usually be right.
One example that springs to mind is in the description of ... already forgot his name. The exec that Striper is hunting. He is on his Corporate Master chip, and thinking to himself. The funniest part is that the section was supposed to be overblown and over the top, because the chip is that way. But it took me to the end of the section to detect that this wasn't the normal style. At one point, the text read somthing like "He was the master, completely in control, the ultimate, but" and then the page ended. I thought to myself, "that is as it should be." And turn the page, what do I see? Yup, that phrase.
I can't tell yet if it's so bad it's good, or if it's just bad.

3) The novel line was originally supposed to tie into SR Duels, which is why the characters in the first three books seem familiar to anyone who checked out the Duels toys. |
That makes alot of sense. Thanx Bull
If the novel was wizkid's Prep for a third run of Duals figures that would make the novel better for me. The characters in the book would make great NPC's but they would make AWESOME action figures.
I MUST HAVE a Beef Patty figure!

4) The 6 books that are now out were the initial publication deal. Had[b/] Wizkids been a bit more finanically stable, and the initial books sold a little better, the plan [b]was continue the novel line, with the 7th and future novels taking place in 2070+.

Emphasis mine
The way you use past tense, does this mean that this is not the case any longer? As in, were the sales bad and future plans shelved for now? Should I buy another copy of Drops of Corruption?

no, saying you don't like the author's work is just fine. I personally think lorechaser hit it on the nose. It does remind me of some out of control games with over the top GM's I've seen. That's my personal taste. Let's avoid the bashing though please.

I don't know Nyx Smith, but I know his SR novels. All I bash then are that novels. Personal attacks are a no-go. And I agree completly with lorechaser.

As a general rule of thumb, buying more copies of Drops of Corruption is always a good thing.
The decision to not continue publication of the novels was made by Roc, and Roc made that particular decision before the last two books came out. So sales could be improving (Aftershock showed up on the Locus gaming-related bestsellers list), but it wouldn't matter enough to get Roc back on board.
Once Roc dropped out, that left WizKids having to look for a new publisher if they so chose. However, last summer's layoffs removed the person most likely to find a new publisher, meaning there was very little interest left at WizKids in finding a publisher for a game that, for their part, was dead (meaning Duels).
That's the current situation in a nutshell. As I mentioned, a few steps have been taken to make a new arrangement, but offering any details of that arrangement or saying if I thought it had a chance of happening would be premature.

Well, not knowing that there was more Shadowrun books out there, I was saddly out of date on my collection, so I purchased from Born to Run, to Fistful of Data tonight.
I don't see them listed on the Shadowrun website, so didn't know to look for them. Someone might want to make sure that any novels are at least listed on the main website, somewhere.

And I thought that so many campaigns were ruined by shapeshifter rules that would make them absurdly overpowered except for the fact that their only useful talent is the ability to get shot.

cut and paste!
meh, it was alright i suppose. The main thing for me was that i could never get into the book, when reading i pictured most the guy siting in his chair typing out the book. Alot of characters used alot of old world terms and slang and references to movies and such i don't think they'd know.
it had the requisite neccesities a shadowrun novel needs, pointless violence, magic, hot babes (love the casino kiss! now THAT i could picture in my mind!). so that made it a book enough to buy i wager
man 7.99 for a novel?! i can remember when it was like 4 bucks or so...arm and a leg lemme tell ya!
thoughts on the novel?

Many people won't have bothered with the idea of playing a shifter assassin before Striper appeared on the scene.
But before we bring this even more OT, let's stop here.

Hi,
Just finished Fistful Of Data and enjoyed it !!
I recently ordered and read the other 5 books, and FoD was the best of the bunch..
..Probably because, for me, it reminded me of the older novels [which I have the full set of and re-read occasionally].
If they can't get a full novel written and published, how about collecting the fiction pieces and putting together an anthology [like they did with Wolf and Raven] ??
Just a thought..

I didn't see the point of the all the meta-vaiants they introduced into SR..
..Just seemed to a bad case of AD&D-ism >shrug<
