The simplified answer is that very basic details appear on the astral plane. That's the blurry, drab, indistinct astral shadow. But if a mage wanted to know what color the item is, physically, and had only the astral shadow to work with, he'd have to hope the item's color carries enough emotional significance to carry through to the astral plane. The gamemaster is going to have to make that call, since the rules can't decide on the emotional sigificance of each trait of each item.
