I'll post over in the SR4 area as requested. I suspect the thread will sink rapidly, but someone might notice it and get some use before it vanishes.
Regarding the damage value, I can only say "Gah! How did that happen?" I've amended them to Str/2 + 1 though I kept a nice AP. I orginally did them as a type of spirit like you thought, but decided I needed an actual animal. The one male, I decided to throw that in as flavour text and an example of the sort of thing a parabiologist might say. Doesn't mean it's true.
But I'm glad you like the descriptions. That's the part that I enjoy doing the most. I might do some gargoyles next.
