wait...I understand knowing the languages, I'm not questioning his intelligence or anything....but didn't talk? What about can't? He isn't exactly equipped to speak like a normal human could...what with no lips or anything....and Druidic and Sylvan at least are languages spoken by cratures with human-like anatomy (Druidic is for humanoid druids...Sylvan for fairies, which have lips)

I'm just curious, because I would really like to see someone explain this away....and I'm betting that the first thing to be used will be something like "He's awakened and the speech is a magickal effect" or whatever....

The Awaken spell bestows the ability of speech, as well as the Int modifier of the caster's known languages on the recipient.

I mean, if you want to run it that the penguin can't vocalize in anything but avian, that's fine. He still has his telepathic mindlink and the ability to understand spoken languages.

True, but the Awaken spell specifically states that it imparts the ability of speech. My penguin simply did not like speaking.

I understood the whole mindlink and stuff...I was actually getting into the "vocalizing" the language part...which is what it sounded like the case was

But hey,,,if its a magickal effect...then I'm not arguing anymore...I can't really win when someone brings up the "It's magic, don't question it" argument in a Fantasy RPG...

Escpecially for D&D. They've got the "magic handwaivum" down pat.
