So after much pondering and sculpting I am finally ready to present the 20 questions for Kano "Hammer" Sanders. Hope it passes muster. I apologize for the mess, I got carried away.

OK, I can't find where to buy a Commlink in the Excel Gear sheet. I can get Commlink accessories and modules, but not the base unit, except for a 'throwaway' unit.

Also, when I enter weapons in the Weapons sheet, I can't put in a quantity to get a price.

Help!
crizh
It's on the Hacking sheet, top right corner, there is a grey heading entitled 'Commlink' and beneath that a blue box with a drop-down.

The weapons and vehicles sheets require a fair amount of bodging as I recall, is it multiple identical custom weapons that you are trying to buy?

No, just in the regular panel with the drop-down lists. I select from the drop down list, get all the info across the sheet for the selected weapon, but $0 to the left, and the "Qty" column won't let me enter a quantity.
crizh
Hmmm, some dingle-berry seems to have protected that column, just unprotect the whole sheet and it works just fine.
pbangarth
Thanks, crizh.

So it looks like my concept and my draft sheet have been okayed.

I'm finalizing gear and after Foci and Enchanting supplies, oh and a tree to live in, I'm a butt nekid fairy with 200 nuyen.gif left to spend on kit.

Any suggestions as to what to buy?

I'm sure there is some vital piece of gear that I'm forgetting....

While the sheets are under review, I shall give you a foretelling vignette of the adventure to come:

===

The stench was terrible. It crawled up into the nostrils and festered there. With each passing minute under the blazing sun, the 5 corpses released stronger waves of acrid gas.

“Eyez, tell me the timeline,” Ghoster breathed as he turned his attention the charred building around him.

Eyez looked through his notes. “About 2:00 am, neighbors heard a muffled explosion and called the Area Boys. An enforcer team of 6 kids arrived at 2:02. The surviving kid reported seeing 5 heavily armed men in the house forcing the family against the wall. The local enforcers fire into the house with their AK’s. The survivor then says that the sound of a minigun started up and five of his group went down.” For dramatic effect, Eyez pointed to the shredded corpses at the front of the building.

“The surviving kid retreated and called for backup. Shortly thereafter, a 30 local enforcers with various weaponry let loose on the house from every direction. At least one of them threw a Molotov cocktail and started the fire. Another blew in the front wall with a RPG. By then the minigun moved up to the 2nd floor and unleashed another hail of bullets, gunning down the kids in the street. In the alley behind the building, I’m guessing the backup met some mojo, because there are a lot of unnatural charring marks on the adjacent building. At 2:25, the neighbors spot a heli overhead with several figures climbing up to board it. The heli departs northward shortly after.”

Ghoster’s face flared with outrage and confusion, “This is the 5th hostile extraction of a bunch of new refugees! They have nothing to do with crime or corruption! There has to be a connection to the last 3 families. Has the lab come back with the biomarker analysis?”

“The preliminary test came back with a positive, but they’re running a follow-up due to a processing error.”
<The same biomarkers…?> “Anything else remarkable about the family?”

“Rumor around the block is that the mother was some sort of shaman too. We’ve been unable to determine what tradition since any religious artifacts and mana lodges burned in the attack. My boys will get the analysis soon.”

“Thank you, Eyez. Send me a full report when you're ready. I have to make a report to the Elders.”

Kneeling down, Ghoster picked up a burned hand-drawn portrait of a man, woman, and 6 children. An unearthly woman materialized beside him. “Tell the Elders we need to move up the relocation project timetable. This is the 3rd family that we’ve offered relocation and that were subsequently extracted. I’m putting in a request for 1 million Nuyen worth of diamonds. If they squawk, remind them our discretion requires we keep our aces up our sleeves. Besides, it about time we had an elite team.” The women nodded and disappeared.

Waving over a crime scene tech, Ghoster handed him the drawing for evidence. <The way to hell is paved with good intentions,> thought Ghoster citing an old proverb, <but we’re going to shape hell to our image.>

How long he had lived in the jungle was a difficult question, many, many rainy seasons. More than he was interested in counting. His people didn't really have the sort of attention span that lent itself to accurate accounting of history. Oral tradition was another matter, they all loved stories but their accuracy left much to be desired.

Why let the facts get in the way of a good story?

The local human tribes left the little spirits of the jungle in peace for the most part. It didn't pay to anger the spirits of the jungle, particularly spirits that so enjoyed painful and instructive practical jokes.

Afrika's talent for talking to the Ancestors had been noted early by the tribes Elders and his uncle, Big Nose, had been assigned to instruct him in the ways of the Doktor. How many years he was Big Nose's apprentice he could not say, it felt like an eternity, but it ended not long after the big-jobs came across the Great Water.

The amfropolojists were the first big-jobs Afrika had really encountered but his natural curiosity and talent with languages led to him being assigned to them for the duration of their stay with the tribe.

He was fascinated by all their words and devices. Half a dozen new languages gave him many more ways to think and to describe the world and even simple devices like binoculars filled him with wonder. Adapting the magics that his tribe used to shape the living wood and earth of their surroundings into a comfortable home, he quickly learned to sculpt simple tools from scrap metal and pretty paperweights resembling more complicated devices.

When they left Afrika was a changed person, one with dreams, hopes, desires and ambitions. He had chosen a path and his apprenticeship was over.

It only remained for him to call his own Spirit Guide to help him on his journey. For many moons he laboured, fasting and dancing, questing through the Metaplanes and listening to the voices of the Anscestors through the haze of mind-altering herbs. Finally he heard within the silent depths of his own heart the voice of his guide calling to him.

Using the ancient songs he poured out a part of his own soul to draw the voice forth from the depths of himself and give it tangible form.

And thus Izoduwa was born of Afrika.

They knew that Afrika's path must take him away from his tribe to the land's of the humans and so they set about crafting magical talismans that would protect Afrika from the terrors of the strange new world he was to encounter.

For many months they laboured together refining and moulding the living mana of the jungle into three powerful thought forms. One aided the flow of Mana, one shielded him from the 'heat' that flow would cause and the last protected him from unfriendly mana he was likely to encounter in the world of the big-jobs.

He knew from the visitors that had come to study the tribe that such things were considered very valuable by the big-jobs and that some wicked big-jobs would even try to steal them away. But Izoduwa was cunning and had been watching and listening in Afrika's heart even before the had been given form. The big-jobs used tiny flecks of stone to help them follow animals that they had caught to see where they went after they let them go.

This did not make any sense but the stones were very small and did not hurt the animals. Best of all, once they had been pushed under the skin with a special needle they could never be lost.

Izoduwa and Afrika bound the thought forms to some of these stones the big-jobs had left behind and pushed them under Afrika's skin where they would never be found. Now Afrika would never have to be without his talismans and he felt confident enough to leave his village to explore the world of the big-jobs.

Taking the form of a great Eagle Izoduwa and Afrika flew swiftly Westwards until they reached the headwaters of the Congo. There they took the form of a deadly Barracuda and like slimy underwater lightning they swam downstream to Kinshasa. This was the place all the tribes looked to for leadership and protection from those that would destroy the jungle.

It was not long before Afrika's wings were itchy and stories of a great city where the streets were paved with gold and anybody could become anything drew him like a moth away from the insular but tolerant Kinshasa towards the great jewel that is Lagos.

Many months later, his illusions shattered, Afrika scrapes out a living helping the Daughters of Yemaja run a free clinic for battered women and doing odd jobs for Two-face, a 'fixer' who has connections in the Amulet Market. He scrupulously pays the debts he owes those that took advantage of his naivety when he arrived in Lagos, all the while helping those less fortunate than himself virtually for free.

When he leaves the clinic he often does so shapechanged into a human form to avoid drawing attention. His lack of dress sense and innocent naivety often draw as much attention as his native form might but the stupid grinning guy in the ill-fitting suit is often allowed to go about his business relatively unmolested.

Kano was jolted rudely awake when the words "Incoming Call" flashed across his vision and his comlink started beeping. He quietly cursed himself in Japanese for falling asleep but reasoned that the drone of the Skytrain's engines could put anyone to sleep and especially someone coming down from an adrenaline high. He checked to see who the caller was before answering, it was Duster, the pilot sitting right in front of him. Kano raised an eyebrow at the slack jawed orc. Duster was a consummate professional but like anyone in their line of work he had his quirks and Duster hated to jack out while he was operating a vehicle, even for a minute. Kano let the Orc stew for a minute before answering, "Duster?" The words came out like the sound of a car being flattened in a junkyard. Kano cleared his throat, a sound like glass being dropped into a garbage disposal, "What is it?"

A little animated tornado with cartoon eyes appeared on his HUD, something Desmond had whipped up no doubt, "Now that sleeping ugly has awoken from his not so beauty sleep, you should know that we are about 3 hours from our destination and the fuel supply isn't looking so good."

Kano rolled his eyes, Duster was still upset about the loss of his Tundra-9 during their refueling stop in Istanbul. Oakland's WTO agents had gotten wind of their plans and had been waiting for them when they landed. The firefight had been brief but the Tundra had been destroyed in the exchange. They'd had to hijack one of the WTO Skytrains. Another of Duster's quirks was his extreme dislike for improvisation when it came to travel plans. It wasn't cost of the vehicle that was bothering Duster, he had plenty of nuyen stashed in black accounts all over the world, it was that the specific vehicle that Duster had, no doubt, agonized over for several days and chosen for this job, had been destroyed. "Given our current flight path and fuel consumption, will we make it?"

"Of course we'll make it. That is why you hired me. It's just that we'll make it with almost nothing left in the tank," Duster sounded exasperated and rather annoyed. Kano had noticed that his voice got somewhat nasally when things didn't go exactly as planned.

Kano allowed himself a little smile, "If it will make you happy, I'll cover the cost of the fuel to get you where you want to go." The entire operation, from his flight from Oakland and the WTO, to the trip to Africa, had virtually drained Kano's emergency funds. Naturally his WTO account had more money but Oakland had frozen the account as soon as Kano had made a run for it.

"Fine. Oh by the way," Duster's tone suggested that he was pulling more that his fair share of the weight in the operation, "Desmond called while you were asleep on the job and said that your 'baggage'", the tornado actually grew hands and made air quotes, "will be waiting for you at the airport. And another thing, I am not your secretary, nor do I get involved in lovers quarrels. Holiday left several messages on my 'link saying she knows I've been in contact with you and she wants to talk to you immediately. She sounded pretty pissed."

Kano's smile faded at the mention of Holiday, "Thank you for passing the information along. As a side note, Holiday and I are not lovers", the tornado rolled its eyes, "she is...was, my doctor. We had a special bond between caretaker and patient, that's all. I'll call her as soon as we land." Kano realized he was talking to himself; Duster had hung up on him. Kano shrugged and pulled up the data file on Lagos that Desmond had sent to his comlink, he'd been studying the local language's and wanted to brush up on the city's history and pitfalls again before they arrived. "Lagos is an ancient city with roots in the thirteenth century...."

Clarification: there is no limit to the starting nuyen for gear. Because the background of cast are experienced or prime runners, I'm assuming the characters have accumulated a large amount of nice hardware.

Question: I've approved all of your character concepts, and I'm still going over the character sheets. We can role play the meet, greet. Interested?

Since your recruiting on a rolling basis, and the last few games I've tried to play in have all stalled I'm going to throw my hat into the ring in case an opening happens to appear. Any chance of a quick list of characters/roles we've got already so that I don't pull something out of my bag of tricks that's an analogue of what's in the game already?

Of course, if you roll in because someone else rolls out, having similar skills could be a bonus. Also, there is a fair bit of overlap in skills among the initial group. Anyway, it's up to the boss.
Ezeckial
This is true, but I'd still be interesting to see what we have already in the group. Anything missing?

My mind is percolating with a few idea's, so seeing what's in the group might also let me decide on something. Either way it'll be fun coming up with something interesting even if it doesn't see play.

We have a lot of areas covered, but here's what we're lacking: drone-riggers, deckers, faces, infiltrators, TM's, medic/doc, scientist(you might need one)

Ezeckial
Hmmm, okay, then the guy I'm working on might fight in perfectly. Fedora, the smooth talking black^H^H White Hat technomancer. Think Rick from Casablanca if he were a hacker.

[ Spoiler ]
budoka05
Cool, that sounds like an interesting mix. However, be careful with the black hat route; this is a Smite Evil campaign.
Ezeckial
Was editing my post with the 20 questions when you replied Budoka. He's more of a curious hacker, as opposed to a malicious one as you can probably tell by reading the 20 questions.

Now I just need to figure out contacts/enemies. I still have about 23 BP's to spend on contacts, and I need to think about who'd he be friends with.

Well, we have a bit of an infiltrator. Ambalo's not amazing at it, but he's pretty good. Doesn't hurt that he basically has thermoptic camo on his "heavy" armor. >.>

True, he has some, but he's not a specialist.
Ezeckial
Okay, 20 questions finished, with friends and enemies. I also have a excel sheet done with the numbers bit. Should I PM that to you Budoka?

Fedora is a human technomancer who follows the Sourcerer stream, he has the black hat Paragon, embodying the curiosity aspect. He's immersed to level 3, and has biowires, so he can become a medic/detective/mechanic/combat character at a thought (although not necessarily a good one). He also makes a half decent face, but he's more of a social engineer than anything.

Fortunately, I appreciate the earnestness to help fill in a big gap. Since I have concerns that the character will not be proficient enough in his core areas, please send me the character sheet. Hopefully there won't be need for modification, but if there is need, we can enhance the char in his core areas.
Ezeckial
Just sent, and trust me, I'm pretty sure he'll be more than efficient as a technomancer. 13 dice to exploit + threading, minimum 10 dice for most other matrix actions.

I just tried to make him not completely useless in the flesh as well. Let me know what you think.

Edited because I totally forgot about auto hot sim for TM's, so 2 more dice for all of those. I didn't want to go too crazy and make it so he was throwing like 20 dice for exploit without threading.
Crank
budoka05, any feedback on my character yet?

@Budoka05: Although it looks like Zeke has a good handle on filling the group's core TM needs, I'll continue working on the TM concept I mentioned in my mesage. Her intended background can easily work into Lagos as a setting (actually, Faraday's opening IC post shows ripples of her own story), and she would be a more physically focused techno with a bit of a mystical leaning in her personality. Will post again later today once I've had a chance to do some serious building.

Just a heads up, I'm going to be at work all night tonight although I'll do my best to post an arrival at the meeting.

After that I'm going to be travelling on and off until Wednesday, I'll do my best to keep up but don't wait for me, you can assume I'm in.

We arrive on the Cote d'Azur late Wednesday but I don't know what the wifi situation there will be like. If it's good you can expect a flurry of posting while I sun myself by the Med'.

I'll let you know when I get there, if it's bad perhaps Pbangarth can sub for me while I'm out of touch....

In addition to crizh, there appears to be several others who will have difficulty posting this weekend. That shouldn't be a problem. This is how I'm handling it IC:

People who post Saturday and Sunday will be able to be part of the initial lunch meeting. For all those who don't, we'll say they got caught in traffic (which happens a lot in Lagos). When the first group is on board, we'll bring the 2nd group who missed the first round in.

OK, then crizh won't have to miss out on the job-offer fun.

I'll have my character ready in a couple hours. Would've been done last night but personal issues came up, followed by work issues. I'll message you the character once the math is checked and it's ready for review, budoka05 (I'll try to get it entered onto the spreadsheet for better reference later, but I'm terrible with those things so it'll take time).
