I kind of play in a very Karma rich game. Lets see... 8 months of playing and 178 karma total and 28 unspent so far.
Karma and cash payouts are high, but opportunities to use either are rather limited ergo need alot of justification to raise skill, and a side session of jumping through hoops to get the big bad fancy toy you're after.
The most I've done is raise every stat to max for an ork, and int to 6.
opened and raised a few skills to 3. Kinda saving up karma now to be able to afford raising strength and body to the upper limit.
I don't know I don't play the game only for advancement nor do any of the other people in the group. I just use what I get to raise my character along the lines of his initial design. He's also a vain narsisist(SP?) ergo alot of the body sculpting and perfection, also has a big ego (high willpower and charisma). Spent the last 50k I had on just furnishing the apartments.
So I think I fall somewhere in the middle overall. I play for advancement, but more so for the story and player interactions. (most of the other players hate me for being arrogant hehe)
Oh and as for the style that we play. It varies session/plot to session/plot. One week we might be knee deep in the congo tracking down a mob boss's daughter who's plane got shot down. Or we're on the mean streets of Chicago quelling or starting a massive gangwar. Or off in japan bringing down some triads. To high tech ultra stealth corp extractions. We have 4 Johnsons we deal with and each one has thier own agendas. Also sometimes the group's morals sway so we might take one guy's job over another.

where karma might only allow for limited stat increases - let's say in the 4-5 karma per adventure range. |
...Hmm... that's what I give out typically, and I consider that generous...

It's important to differentiate between an Adventure and a Session. When I play, I normally play for 3-5 hours and that's half an adventure, so a session (for me) is half of the karma for an adventure. According to the book (and this is a suggestion, not criticism of anyone's game anywhere ever) there's an absolute maximum of 12 karma points for an adventure if the adventure is very difficult and the character was absolutely amazing. So 4-6 is probably AVERAGE for an ADVENTURE, with 2-3 being your average per session. If it works, you don't need to rethink it, Kagetenshi

6 karma total from Adventure/job/plot (3-4karma) what have you and from RP (2-3karma).
178 divided by 6 is approxomately 29. Which sounds about right, We play several times a week for one adventure/job/plot. So 32 weeks are in 8 months. So typically we average 5-ish karma a week. We also play on a bit of accelerated time for downtime.
Playing with stoner friends who don't do much else means a lot of free time to play.
I don't know. Does this make me wrong?

You should keep to whatever works for you Kagetenshi. A recent
Poll on DSF revealed that the average range for an Adventure (assuming more than one session) is around 6-7 but it varies considerably.
Few people seem to get over the 10 karma mark (including individual awards) for a "standard difficulty" adventure and in a couple of cases those that did justified it as a way of compensating long breaks between sessions.
