Quick Question: Can an Adept learn shielding? Or are his only chance to get better defences vs. spells the adept powers?
Aaron
One would imagine, but the rules state that Shielding dice are added when using Counterspelling. Since adepts can't take Counterspelling, Shielding would be useless to them.
Apathy
does this also mean that a initiated normal mage with no skill in counterspelling would be unable to use sheilding?
BishopMcQ
By my reading, that is correct. Any mage that did not learn counter-spelling would be unable to utilize Shielding.
Ol' Scratch
Nothing stops them from actually learning the metamagic, though. (And in the case of the initiated mage, he could always learn Counterspelling at a later date. Not so for standard adepts.)
BishopMcQ
Precisely. I'd find it akin to buying a motorcycle without knowing how to ride. It's there, but until you put a little time and effort into figuring it out, there's no real purpose.
Fortune
Shielding is not among those Powers specifically listed as being usable by Adepts.

QUOTE (SR4 pg 189)
Note that adepts can only learn the metamagic techniques of Centering, Flexible Signature, and Masking.

QUOTE (Street Magic pg. 52)
Not all of the techniques introduced below are appropriate for adept characters. Adepts may learn Divining, Psychometry, and Sensing, as well as the exclusive metamagics of Adept Centering, Attunement (Animal and Item), Cognition, Empower Animal, Infusion and Somatic Control, which are available only to adepts and mystical adepts.

Of particular interest is the fact that Adepts cannot learn Extended Masking.
Kyoto Kid
...so she can no longer mask the nature of her weapon focus then? That was one of the uses which made Masking useful for an adept in previous editions.

Always pay the extra 5 points, just for shielding counterspelling alone.

15 points really... it costs you a point of magic to be able to counterspell, which means 1 less power point for your adept.

Yes, plus 8/16 points for the skill. But there is no other way of getting the defense. It's why we have almost nobody who doesn't do MAs or mages, as 7 dice vs 3 dice is a huge difference, and using the rest of the team it's more like 10-12 dice instead of 3 dice.
