- The Outfoxies
- Covert Action (as mentioned in another thread)
- Syndicate

Simple, they took a good mech simulator style game and dumbed it down to a shoot'em up game for the console kiddies.

It's a terrific 1994 arcade game. It's a kind of 2D one-on-one fighting game set in a contest between professional assassins.
You play in huge levels, with weapons scattered everywhere but you can also fight with your bare hands. The screen zooms in when the characters get close to each other and out when they are far away. Actually it's not unlike Smash Bros, except that you have to kill the opponent instead of throwing him out of the arena.
What makes the game really fun is the gameplay and the arenas, full of dynamic elements.

I want a space combat sim, where you can fly flighters etc, but you also have to actually FLY the capitol ships, and manage damage, weapons coverage, etc.

It's hard to define exactly what it's lacking, but I didn't enjoy it that much. There are a few things I really disliked, such as:
* The useless filler mission with the cops and the wanted posters. Not much of a challenge and just a waste of time.
* The mission with the supersoldiers in India. I don't really like infiltration missions, and I hate them when you can't do anything to the enemies.
* The boss battle with the samurai girl. Once inside the house there was absolutely no way I could win in Superspy difficulty level (at least not with the way I'd spent my XP).
* The snowmobile part, when you come back from the enemy base. I guess you're supposed to drive through the enemies with everyone shooting at you, which is quite cool... But in Superspy difficulty you get killed too quickly, so you either have to lower the difficulty level or get down from the snowmobile to kill the enemies first.
* Respawning/infinite enemies.

The snowmobile part is quite doable on Superspy if you've spent some points to raise your hitpoints. I mean, it's still possible if you haven't, but it's not nearly as frustrating if you have. I think it was designed to screw the people who decided to dump all their skill points into armor instead of hitpoints.
The supersoldiers in India can be beaten down into overheating if you really need to. Some of my fond memories of this game are emptying all my ammo into one, drawing the tulwar, and going BANZAAIIIII and then actually overheating the supersoldier before dying.
I found the mission with the cops and wanted posters to be harder than the other ones since you can't just blow the cops away. I think I died more often to the cops cornering me and beating me to death with their batons than from guys with rifles whom I was allowed to shoot.

Although the one thing that killed me the most in the game was the spiked ceiling deathtrap.
I've played through NOLF 2 maybe 10 times or so, but NOLF 1 only 1 time. You know, NOLF 2 basically corrected a lot of gameplay frustrations in NOLF 1, such as stealth being a total nightmare (no hiding spots), and there being more weapons than number keys to bind them to, such that it requires planning in advance of the level if you want to be able to draw a luger. Not to mention I found NOLF 1 was much harder to complete than NOLF 2. The last levels of NOLF 1 are much harder than the last levels of NOLF 2.
NOLF 1 had excellent atmosphere, and perhaps part of the charm was that they gave you all sorts of gadget weapons like the perfume bottles that were ultimately useless. But NOLF 2 basically removed a lot of the gameplay elements that were frustrating from NOLF 1. One example is how it's easier to use stealth because NOLF 2 tells you when you're "hidden" and when you're not.

You want to hunt down a copy of Independence Wars 1&2 (2 has the pretty graphics and Privateer like storyline, 1 has the Enders Game crunchy mechanics)
Once you've worshipped at the altar of IW we can both scream into the night for a sequel.

I may or may not have lost hours to the ship design function in GC2. I loved how I could spin up production on ships that met my style of play, from fast lightly armored ships to protect my shipping and harass the enemy to massive battleships that formed the backbone of an invasion fleet. Seriously, I thought Dumpshock was occasionally bad on the "retarded half-logic" front now and again, but NMA puts everyone to shame. My favorite thing is that they incessantly mock and snark on anyone who says Fallout 3 will be any good because "obviously they don't know, since the game isn't out yet." Yet at the same time, they have crystal clarity into the future, saying how much it will suck, because "everything that made Fallout good has been stripped out."

And if you like Gal Civ II you might want to give Sins of a Solar Empire a try. It's put out by Stardock as well. It's an RTS that tries to mimic the feel of a traditional 4X turn based game. Think Homeworld meets Masters of Orion. Unlike most RTS's, it's entirely possible to manage an economic victory, at least on larger maps where you can play the factions off against each other and sic pirates on anyone who gives you too many problems. The AI sometimes throws some surprising tricks at you and it took me almost 2 weeks to beat a game on the largest map with 6 other civilizations.
It also has an awesome sense of scale. You can zoom out seemlessly to see the entire explored galaxy or zoom in close enough that you can see the wing markings on your fighter craft. If you zoom out far enough to bring a capitol ship into focus you can hardly see the fighters, if you bring a planet into focus the Capitol ships and space stations look like tinker toys. Just to give you a sense of the scale, on the last big map campaign I had almost 1000 ships not counting fighter squadrons.
It has a few issues, the biggest one for me at least being the lack of ship customization outside of cap ships. That's an aspect of most 4X games that I quite enjoy but and the interface could also use a bit of polish, particularly in regards to fleet management but the innovation more than makes up for it. All and all it's still a hell of a lot of fun.

And dude, to hell with anyone who says Fallout3 is going to suck. It looks pretty decent and there's an excellent development house in charge of it. Even if it's "Oblivion with guns and mutants" I could care less, the story so far sound excellent and the attention they seem to be lavishing on the setting is just what I'd expect.
