Ah, the visual-aid helped. biggrin.gif

Here are detailed floor maps for the Odyssey, as requested. Sorry it has taken me so long to get them together. If you are really worried about scale you can print them on a sheet of quarter inch graph paper. Each square should equal about 1.5 2 meters. I would drop them into an editor and rotate them 90 degrees first tho.

The first image is a diagram of how I'm envisioning the layout relative to the ships profile.

Alright, I am fine with relaxing at the bar IC for a while, but unless someone wants to post extensively about it, can we fast-forward to the part where we are leaving and starting to do legwork? biggrin.gif
Method
I'm all for it! smile.gif

- Lidralyn: Please let me know how you want to configure your agents for the search. Specifically what programs you want to load them with, if you want them to hack secure systems and how you will run them (on your comm or uploaded to another node).

- OneRonin: I will post an overview description of the warehouse map OOC tonight. If you have specific questions after that let me know.

- BlackHat: If you want to contact your dude in the Harbor Patrol, feel free to post IC whenever we clear out of the bar.

- pragma: let me know if/how you want to recon the warehouse's node.

- crizh: same for astral scouting.

Method
NOTE on directions: the area maps are rotated 90˚ clockwise from North (i.e. the top of the page is the western edge of the map).

Surrounding Area: The warehouse is on the northern side of Salmon Bay north of Downtown. The area is rather industrialized; lots of shipping, fishing, factories and warehouses. The water front (top left corner) is south of the warehouse . To the north (right side of the page) are some random warehouses and workshops. The building directly to the east (bottom of the page) is an abandoned factory. The large building to the southeast (bottom left) corner of the map is some kind of distribution center. There is an abandoned tenement to the northeast (the triangular building).

Warehouse & Pier: The warehouse is surrounded by a lot full of salvaged machinery and scrapped vehicles. The lot is fenced along the eastern side, with a gate in the southeastern corner and open to the western side. The pier is a cement shelf that gives way to wooden and metal docks. Currently there are two small vessels (a large tug and a small cargo ship) anchored south of the warehouse.

-----------------------------

Warehouse Roof: The warehouse is a simple pre-fab sheet metal structure. The southern half of the warehouse is a single story office area. The northern half is the two stories high storage area. There are two attached sheds on the southern edge- one is accessible from within the warehouse but the other is a separate structure that simple abuts the warehouse.

Warehouse Interior: The northern half of the building is the warehouse proper. Crates, barrels, storage shelves etc. There are catwalks above accessible by ladders from the ground floor. The southern half of the building houses a storefront reception area, rest room, break room and two offices. All are in a chronic state of disarray. At the southern end of the hall a non-factory door has been installed in order to access the larger of the two sheds, which has been converted into a machine shop. The smaller shed is used for storage, mostly of machine parts.
pragma
Cooking up a reply. I'll have it some time tomorrow. Guy plans to investigate the building and also to see if he can get some access to high end radar equipment or information about smugglers.
Method
Updated floor maps for the Odyssey. Links quoted below. Scale is 1/4" = 2 meters. Let me know if anyone has questions or things they want to change.
QUOTE (Method @ Jul 22 2008, 08:50 PM) *

So, where are we at? I've heard from BlackHat, pragma and DireRadiant within the last week but no word from crizh, OneRonin or Lidralyn recently. Let me know if you guys are still around/interested. If everyone is just busy thats fine, but this game is getting dangerously close to collapse...

If no one is going to post IC at the Strip House lets bump forward to legwork as BlackHat has suggested. Let me know how you want your character to proceed.
crizh
I is still here....

I was just looking back over ooc yesterday to refresh my memory as to what spirits I had hanging around.

I'll see if I can squeeze out something IC tonight while I'm 'working'.

I'll start off back at the ship and do some astral scouting...
pragma
Sorry for the slow response. I'm in the midst of moving cross country, but have also been a hair lazy. Guy's still scheming.
Method
No problem. Like I said in the begining I don't mind if things slow down here and there as long as people stay engaged.
BlackHat
Anyone mind if I bump the timeline forward to 10ish the next day, for Carter at least? Then I can get the ball rolling on whatever legwork I think he might do.
I don't want to interrupt the astral recon, but otherwise it will be a while before Carter wakes up. biggrin.gif
Method
I'll leave a place holder until I get a chance to resolve Petwo's astral recon.

Blackhat: bump away when ready.
Method

crizh: don't mean to gloss over your recon, but I want to keep things rolling if people are actually interested in posting. Feel free to post specific questions and/or assensing rolls OOC and I'll fill in any details.
BlackHat
Roll for checking if Carter's contact is available: 6 - so he should be.

We can either RP it out, or go to the rules for information gathering in the runner's companion (if you have it) or some combination of the two. Harold Davis is pretty well connected, and this falls right into his niche - so, I figure he'll either have some information, or be very interested as to why he does not. Whether or not he's willing to share that information with Carter is a whole other issue. His relatively low loyalty suggests that it won't be free. biggrin.gif
Method
Alright people... Lets do this... cool.gif

I'd like to bust out the prep work over the next week and bump ahead job the week after if no one objects? Probably a little ambitious but I really want to get through this pre-lim job quickly and get back to the central plot.

BlackHat: I do have Companion, but I haven't had a chance to read it in detail. I'd be happy to do it either way, but its a great opportunity to try out the new rules... I'll read up this weekend, and then maybe we can do a combination?
BlackHat
Sounds good. I'll be at a wedding today, so probably won't get to responding until tomorrow, but I will.
DireRadiant
Sorry folks, but I will be dropping out of this game. Keep up the fun and good work.
Method
DireRadiant: Thanks for your time and effort.

Everyone: Just to bring you all up to speed, DR and I have been PM'ing about his this for a bit and trying to think up a creative way to use Bart. Unfortunately I can't think of anything that wouldn't involve stringing DR along for another month or two. I have an idea for writing him out though... devil.gif

BlackHat: Please post an Charisma + Etiquette + Loyalty roll so I can gage how much Davis is willing to share for free. Judging from my Connection + Connection roll for him, he may turn out to be a very useful contact indeed... wink.gif
pragma
Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I'm still in the game. I committed the cardinal sin of falling off the map without telling people in advance and I'm terribly sorry, but I am more or less contentedly, moved across country now.

Guy's going to go hang out in the copse of trees kitty corner to the target building on the map and do his best to look homeless. He plans to record comings and goings from the building, decrypt and listen to any promising comm channels and slow hack the building (or use passcodes if Kurita provided them).

I plan to throw up a relevant IC tomorrow.

BlackHat
[3,2,3,4,2] He might be a very useful contact, but with that roll, I am expecting no favors. This is important, though, so I am going to use a point of edge to reroll all 5 dice: [1,6,4,5,1]=2 hits.
Method
pragma: let me know how you plan to access the system (AR vs VR, etc) and what you'd like to do. If there are specific system operations post the appropriate rolls. Also, could you post a couple matrix perception and standard perception test rolls.

crizh: anything thing specific you want to do astrally/magically?
crizh
No, just checking the place for Wards and patrolling spirits. Any significant Astral Signatures are also of interest.

After that I'm going to get some sleep and get up with the others. I'll probably spend the day summoning/binding but I'll get to that IC today sometime...
BlackHat
Going to dail up Bart, and mention what I just heard - being intentionally vague over the phone (never know who's listening in).

I figure, if he agrees to talk to Davis or his contact, cool, if not, he can take the phone call as a head's up that people are looking for him in connection to the events of a certain night where we met.

Let me know if either Davis has a problem with Carter going off to talk (I can edit the post) or if you think Bart would have a problem with me passing along his contact information.
crizh
Haha. I don't have any more binding materials....

Summoning

Refining Raw seashells.

[ Spoiler ]

BlackHat
I don't know that much about the alchemy rules, so don't consider this a question of how Petwo spends his day (he already did his part of the legwork, after all), but could you let me know if I'm correct - just to improve my understanding of this aspect of the game?

With that check, he can transform 2 raw materials into 2 refined materials, in one day. If he spent two days doing it, he would have 4 refined materials, which is enough for a force 1 conjuring material, which would take a third day.

Assuming you "took" 2 hits (for your 10 dice) on each roll, it takes 2.5 days per force of the end materials? So it'll be roughly a week before you can bind even a force 3 spirit?
crizh
Yup, pretty much spot on. Although he's already got 13 refined units, 15 by the end of today.

Doing this today I was surprised at how poor Petwo was at it actually. I think RC has made a big difference to Chargen. I re-did Scab the Elven sewer-dwelling Shaman for the Orc-Underground game and he's way, way better at this than Petwo.

Admittedly he's built on 500BP's but 64 of them went on Initiation which has no impact on Enchanting.

Petwo's not very good at summoning either for some reason. Don't know what I did but he's just not well optimized for it.

On the other hand those Homunculi rock...
pragma
Okay, here's the plan. Guy wants to do the following (all in full VR, so it should be rather quick ~30 seconds to a minute, I didn't do the math. Also, thresholds are lower and I might get more dice. I can never remember.):

Method
Sorry folks. For some reason Dumpshock randomly decided to stop sending me email updates on this thread....

Pragma: I'll try to work my way through your Matrix actions in the next day or so. As for your question:

I asked this question in another thread many moons ago (for an unrelated game). The consensus was that it should be possible, but of coarse there don't seem to be any definite rules I can find in the dozen or so paragraphs about commcodes, access codes, datatrails, tracking or spoofing the datatrail...

The section of the BBB on "The Datatrail" says:
QUOTE (SR page 216)
... it may be used by hackers to track you down or by law enforcement to link you to certain crimes or activities.
But then there's this line:
QUOTE (SR page 219)
Note that you must have detected the target with a Matrix Perception Test (p. 217) in order to trace him.

Essentially, it'd be like having a phone number but not knowing who it belonged to. I imagine it could be done but would not be a simple Track action. You would have to hack the MSP and try to find out who owns the commcode, but that'd be a whole bunch of work if there is a long list of commcodes from various different MSPs. Of coarse if you observed any of the gangers accessing the node you could put together the commcodes with the users pretty easy.

Anyone have a canon reference? Anything in Unwired that I'm missing? Thoughts?

[EDIT]

From Unwired:
QUOTE (Unwired page 65)
A spider can use the information in the access log to Track an intruder through the Matrix (p. 219, SR4) even if the intruder’s icon is no longer in the node. Unfortunately for the spider, hackers tend to change both their location and their access ID on a regular basis, so this information is usually dated and no longer accurate. A successful Track Test using access log information will only give the location from which the hacker performed the last action recorded in the access log, and the access ID that she used at the time.
pragma
I suppose there's the option of calling the commcode and hope that the other party answers. Then trace the call to the icon. A combination of a con test, a sniffer test and a track test? I'll think about it more.
crizh
QUOTE (BBB p219)
Note that you must have detected the target with a Matrix Perception Test (p. 217) in order to trace him.

That's always struck me as a bit odd.

What does a Matrix Perception Test boil down to though? It's examining the sculpting of another Matrix Icon, be it a Node, IC, Persona, Sprite, File, Program or just a piece of pure sculpting to endeavor to discover information about it other than the obvious things it wants you to know, or think you know.

Logically you must be able to perceive a Node without being logged into it. Every node must have a public piece of sculpting, an index.html, that contains, at a bare minimum, the log-in interface.

How do folks find a particular Node? They enter it's address and the Matrix takes them right to it.

All you need is a comm-code and if a node is presently connected to the Matrix you can go right to it and perceive it.

What Track does is firstly identify the comm-code of an Icon's originating Node, assuming that the one it is claiming to be coming from is false, and then secondly attempt to pin-point that Node in the real world.

You only really need to perceive an Icon to determine what it claims it's originating comm-code is. Once you know that you shouldn't need to be able to perceive it to Track it. Assuming it hasn't disconnected, moved and spoofed another comm-code.

So if you can acquire the fake or real comm-code an Icon was using by other means, like it was stupid enough to leave it in your event log, you should be able to Track it whenever it is connected presuming that it hasn't spoofed a different code.

Hmm, I'm not sure that made any sense. I should get some sleep...
Method
I tend to agree with you crizh.

EDIT: Ok, just re-read Unwired page 53.... the commcode is apparently nothing like an URL. Its more like a collection of access codes for various devices one might use to receive messages. The access ID is basically the IP address and is all you need to call, hack or trace someone...

<snip>

The access log records access IDs not commcodes.

Given this, my interpretation is that in order to locate someone in the real world your Track program needs a current access ID (current being the operative word). The two ways to acquire an access ID are:
A.) Analyze an icon (successful Matrix Perception test) or
B.) viewing the Access Log of a node that icon has been in

The big difference with the Access Log approach is the time delay. If the users access ID changes at all between when they were on the node and when you run the trace the datatrail will be broken and then you're stuck with the info described in Unwired page 65 (last known location and access ID). Thats where black MSPs, anonymizers and spoofed datatrails come into play. As a hacker (or any runner, really) you simply have to do something to cover your trail or you're basically fucked.

<snip>

So to answer pragma's question, yes you can Track users with data from the Access Log so long as they haven't changed access IDs, gone off line, redirected etc...
Method
pragma:

Most of the stuff you wanted to do should be allowed automatically, since the passkey Kurita gave you allows security access. I think I covered the rest of it IC. Let me know if you want me to fill in any details...
pragma
What tenement is referred to in the IC post? The building next to the copse of trees where Guy is hiding?
Method
pragma: Yes, the small triangular building with a dark grey roof. I assumed those were the trees you referred to. Did you mean another copse of trees?

---------------------------

All: Lets try to formulate a plan this week and bump forward to the actual mission next weekend. You guys can do the planning IC or OOC, but I think OOC would probably be most efficient. OneRonin hasn't logged on in awhile, but if you have uses for Des I can play him for the time being.
pragma
Right copse, just wanted to confirm the building. (When I first read the IC I thought you might be referring to the warehouse, my bad though.)

If there are first floor windows, and they're not tinted, and a listening perception check doesn't turn up anything actively moving around or looking out the window -- Guy will creep over and peek through one to see if the stink is being caused by something obvious. If nothing horrible happens he'll continue his stakeout and keep watching comings and goings and recording what bad guys are where until the group decided they'd rendezvous.

audio perception # dice 15 :: 6 5 2 4 2 3 1 1 2 2 4 4 3 4 6 -- 3 hits
moving from sleeping bag to window # dice 2 :: 1 1 -- 0 hits, critical glitch
-- at least I hope the consequences of a hobo hanging out in a hobo blind aren't severe.
visual perception # dice 15 :: 5 1 1 3 3 2 6 5 6 2 6 1 2 1 5 -- 6 hits

I'll toss up a planning post tomorrow, I hope.
Method
Sorry gents. I've been ill this week. I'm cooking up some IC posts now. I'll try to get them up... soonish...

crizh: I feel like Petwo is kinda sidelined right now, so if there's anything more you want to get done let me know.

All: also, if there was legwork ya'll wanted Des or Bart to undertake, I could make whatever rolls are necessary. Might as well make use of Bart until I write him out of the story. I assume (hope) OneRonin will be back, but the same goes for his character. If I don't hear from Lidralyn before the smuggler intercept job is done, I'm going to write his character out too. As I said at the outset, I'm pretty determined to keep this thing going, so as long as you guys are still in we'll just do what we need to do...
crizh
It's cool, I kinda knew he didn't have anything useful to contribute to today's legwork which is why I settled him down to some Alchemy that will take all day.

Unless there's some sort of nasty hiding in that building....
pragma
Composure test:
Cha 3 + Will 5 # dice 8 :: 2 6 6 5 5 1 5 2 -- 5 hits

Guy's going to back slowly into sunlight, then walk away like nothing happened and curse the fact that he forgot to use any of his expensive sensors (which are probably all on the ship anyway).

Never actually rolled Starting Cash, # dice 4 :: 6 5 2 5 -- 1800 nuyen.gif

Once at the boat, he'll shower and look into buying a few (3) microcameras at availability --. Next he'll look for Carter and ask how hard it would be to put an eye in the sky over the warehouse to continue digital and physical surveillance. If Carter isn't available, he'll take the cameras back to the building and place them surreptitiously, then continue surveillance remotely.

By the way, I'll back edit furiously if I've overstepped my bounds. Just let me know what you need to see.
Method
No problems here. I like that you tossed a composure test and worked it into your IC post.
Method
So we've stalled again it seems. Sorry I haven't been able to push things forward. It looks like pragma, BlackHat and crizh are the only players still active. I'm thinking maybe we should cut dead weight. Spawn new IC and OoC threads, jump ahead past all this pre-lim job stuff, dump PCs and NPCs that are no longer involved and get back to the game I envisioned to begin with. My questions for you guys are these:

1.) Do we just forge ahead? Finish the prelim job and continue as is?
2.) Do we recruit new people (and risk basically ending up in the same boat again)?
3.) Is the problem that I'm not pushing the game forward often enough? Do you guys want me to play a more active role in describing the events your characters are involved in? For example, right now the ball seems to be in Carter's court. He has info and drones the team needs, so I've been waiting for a plan of some kind. I don't want to dictate his actions, but I could if need be.
4.) Are we just prolonging the inevitable and just need to pull the plug?
5.) Should we dump this game altogether and start anew with a different theme, setting, tone, etc etc? If there is some other type of campaign people would like to explore I might be willing to GM or play. Maybe something more loose that is less likely to stall?

As always, let me know what you guys think.
crizh
I like the tone of the existing game and I quite like the character I have. Obviously I'd build him differently now in light of RC but I'm more than happy with him as is.

As to new players, it could go either way. I don't know exactly what it is about Phoenix Rising but it has snowballed at an enormous rate despite most of the team not wanting to do the job. It might be the sheer number of players, with nearly a dozen characters there was always someone driving the story forward at a breakneck pace.
BlackHat
Hmm, I hadn't actually seen the ball as in Carter's court - but I do see what you mean. I apologize.
He does have information, and I had intended to propose meeting the ship at sea again, so I see what you mean.
I sort of figured everyone needed a turn at doing some legwork, so I was waiting for everyone to finish. biggrin.gif Obviously, the three peopel still here, have finished.

Now, I do think we'll have trouble doing the job with just 3 of us. So, if we are going to push forward with this job, we could use some help.

As to whether to skip it entirely, and get to the game you planned... I would suggest this. Once that job starts, will it be easy to dump PCs that are inactive and pull in new ones? If not, I say we look for some new PCs, but move forward with this job, until we get a team that gels and we know posts pretty actively. Then, moving into the real job, we don't have to worry as much about replacements.

Otherwise, if we recruit a few new guys for the big job, and they end up bailing, or never getting started, we're stuck.

I also agree that Carter might have been made a LITTLE differently if RC was out, when I made him, but nothing big.
Given that we haven't had any karma or anything, if we're inviting new PCs in, it might be nice to get a chance to update our current characters with the new options.
pragma
Hey, I'm still here and interested.

The original survival horror premise of the campaign is immensely appealing to me; I deeply lament the death of the "A Fragile Thing." The current run is pretty fun and I feel a decent job has been done expediting it even if the momentum petered out.

I'm fine with another round of recruitment. I do think the three of us (especially with an NPC Des) could pull off a hell of an open water heist.

Haven't looked into RC (or Unwired yet for that matter) yet. I'm pretty happy with Guy though.
Method
Okay. The consensus seems to be that you guys like where we're at, so we can continue as is for now. I'll start phasing out the other PCs and we'll finish the smuggler intercept job using Des and Bart as NPCs where necessary. Then we can revisit the idea of recruiting a few new players. If we do that, you guys are welcome to redesign your characters using the new options in RC at that point. If we do add a few people I think its going to be a balancing act. One or two engaged players might help advance the story a little faster, but I don't think I have the time to write GM replies to a game as big as Phoenix Rising. Maybe keep your ears to the ground and we can do some targeted recruiting of people we think will fit well and stay engaged.

As far as the current game goes, lets jump ahead to the late afternoon/evening of Tuesday, 18 Feb 2070 (~24 hours before the smugglers are due to arrive in Seattle). You're all back on the Odyssey. Carter has the Trader Queen's transponder ID and all the info he got from Davis (who BTW rolled 7 Hits on that legwork test... eek.gif ) and Guy has some surveillance data on the gangers at the warehouse. I'll let you guys work out a plan however you like, but some healthy OoC discussion with a dash of IC would probably be best. Post any questions and I will fill in details, mostly OoC.

Also, on the topic of Karma: I've been debating how I want to advance your characters. A weekly (RL time) karma point seems to work well in PbP games I've been in, but we're currently advancing so slowly your characters will be uber-bad ass before the smuggler job is done!! wobble.gif Maybe I'll just assign lump sums at random as we proceed? Other ideas are welcome. For now I'll give everyone 2 points for all the legwork and negotiation up to this point.

Arggg!! Once again Dumpshock has randomly decided not to send me email updates!! Looks like you guys are moving along nicely though. Let me know if you have any questions for me.

FYI, "HookRider" is a made up name for a humanoid drone (the manservant) modified for scuba-use underwater. We can't ride them. biggrin.gif But the ycoudl walk around on land (with floppy flipper feet), if we need some more backup.

I was thinking of the smallest water drones -- which I envisioned as jet ski kind of things -- but I hadn't looked at your drone list in a while.

Ah, I do have a Proteus Lamprey (hydrofoil) that can seat 8 (uncomfortably). We could use it to escape via water.

Do we have enough of a plan to more forward?
