Nah, you take a box of physical damage every combat turn while smoking but doing so reduces range penalties by one level and adds 2 dice (-1TN in SR3) to all tests made with a scoped weapon .

Yeah, Metal Gear called it right. Some of my fondest memories from that game were deciding to perversely run around with a cigarette in Raiden's mouth just to watch it do more damage to him than bullets.

Marijuana as a gateway drug went out with the 80s. Nowadays kids get introduced to drugs by getting high off cough suppressants
HEY!! THAT'S ME YOU'RE TALKIN ABOUT!! Plus, $10 for a 32 hour high that's like combining shrooms, LSD, weed, and a mickey of vodka is pretty good. And 'gateway drug' is something the US made for the "War on Drugs'.
Back to the topic, weed will never leave. It's always there, just outta sight, and we're all lovin it.

I know you can do hot ohuses. the idea is look for a house in a godo neighborhood. and use it just to grow stuff inside. police now look for massive electric bills as clues. But I think SF's idea about space is also that different nations do not have as much space anymore. The US is only about 1/4 of it's old size. That means if you use the same ground. it will be imported-driving up costs.

I understand we have a lot of real-world drug analogues in Shadowrun. Cocaine has it's equivalent Novacoke, we have Cram, which I assume would be a derivative of an amphetamine like Speed, Ice or Base. Bliss is an opiate like heroin, methadone or opium.
But as far as I can see, the drug that never seems to go out of style, Marijuana has only one analogue - and that's deepweed.
However this strikes me as strange. ...
I'll bet that REAL WORLD lawyers advised the publishers not to include REAL drugs. Given that, the only problem I see is that you don't think Deepweed is a close enough analogue to Mary Jane.
Get over it! It's close enough.
Also, Deepweed use doesn't give mundanes astral perception. As one poster pointed out, if it did, that would make it both more popular, and actually useful.

I think in 1st Ed they used to make reference to Nicosticks in fluff sections. It probably wouldn't be a stretch to think that synthesized THC could be given a similar treatment.
Nicotine actually causes the blood vessels in the eyes to constrict (like the blood vessels in the rest of the body) and may hamper night vision. An interesting predicament if you had an elf with a three-pack-a-day habit.

yeah, only deepweed costs about 50x today's black market prices for weed (i know YMMV, but i figure ~8 bucks worth of decent kindbud or hashish will get somebody pretty ripped if they smoke it all at once)

synthetic cannabinoids are already around - CP 55,940 for example, is 45 times more potent than delta9-thc, or HU-210, which is several hundred times more potent
frankly, i think the world could do without, because dosing something that strong is way way too unreliable, and those responsible marijuana users don't need a bunch of morons overdosing on THC-analogues and making them look bad
but that being said, i'm sure that despite the lack of references to it, marijuana is still around in 2070. it's been around for centuries, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon

Marijuana (or synthetic canabinoids) are mentioned in Arsenal as a part of a drug called snuff. And according to the tables provided there, it's completely legal.
Oddly, it gives +1 to reaction, meaning that in SR4, smoking weed makes you a better driver...

Hm, over here Snuff is tobacco in powder form, intended to be snorted.. sounds wierd? well this is Sweden.. the worlds largest consumer of snus and we dont shun taking our nicotine in unorthodox ways

Snorted, or stuffed under you upper lip. Or even, for that secondary school dare, attempted shoved up where the sun was never meant to shine...
Yeah, the Scandinavians have a way with tobacco few would ever even want to emulate.
Anyway: cannabis is likely legal most places in the 2070s. Without opening the whole debate and attached wormcan, I'd say that most governments are moving towards that (slowly, but they're moving) even now. And what corp would pass up the opportunity sell something with such strong sub-cultural traditions; making them appear to be friendly in the eyes of even more people.

In my game there was a PC whose defining features were:
1) He liked sex
2) He smoked a lot of dope.
That was really about it. While everyone else was posting about how the building is surrounded and on fire, he'd come on and post something about how he's running in the sewers (??) I think he took his role-playing a little TOO seriously.
Anyway, I got some stats for weed just for him (forget where from). For SR3R:
Marijuana .5/1 hrs $10 SI .5
AKA: grass, weed, hashish, dubich, ganja
Addiction: 3m
Tolerance: 3
Speed of Addiction: 20
Speed: 2d6/1d6 minutes
Vector: Inhalation/Ingestion
Duration: 4d6 minutes/1d3 hours
Effects: Quickness -2, Intelligence -1, Charisma -1, Willpower -1, Reaction -2, lethargy, euphoria, block-all(2)
Crash Effects: Charisma -1, Reaction -1, Willpower -1, hunger, sensory sensitivity, Stimulant(1)
Permanent Effects: Artistic skills +1 once per month of use [Charisma(6), +1 maximum total increase], Charisma +1 once per month use [Willpower(6), +1 maximum total increase]
