Full Version: Questions for Characters and Character Concept

In my last thread I had asked some questions besides the specific topic. Since they didn’t get any attention I thought it would be best to make a whole new thread for those questions and a couple of new ones. Basically these are questions for 3 different characters I am working on.

Combat Medic/Support Mage
This character had to be remade after my last game died but I liked the character so much I didn’t want to burn his sheet. I don’t have the sheet with me, GM keeps all that stuff for safe keeping and cuz he’s the most organized of us all, but basically the character is a former combat medic who recently discovered his magical ability and has been running a low level hospital for the less fortunate. My question for this is something no one I’ve asked has come up with an answer for. My character uses his medical skills to strip organs and implants from those unfortunate enough to end up on the wrong side of his assault rifle but I'm wondering what do I do with the left overs?

The spare flesh left over in my last game was usually thrown away but now having a chance to start over I was thinking of using the still warm left over bodies as payment to ghouls or vamps or whatever creatures would fit. They protect the hospital and act as bouncers. In return my character would provide them with food, cheap(er) medical care, and contacts for gear they may need. How would you treat this? Is it something possible to start with from chargen or would it have to be earned through the game?

The next question is what if I want to expand my hospital and need more advanced gear? I thought the best, more like most risky but with the highest rewards, is jacking some supplies for a corp hospital or something along those lines. Nothing that would hurt more average people, they could probably get a new shipment sent in an hour, but you could get some great gear out of it. I know the risks involved and how that could end with us being hunted by another team, already planning ahead for that. What me and my GM were wondering is how much security do you think would guard one of these shipments?

Mystic Adapt Face/Investigator/Summoner
This character was probably the easier ones I made. I always thought the mystic adapt kinda sucked but when I actually made this build it worked pretty well in the games I played. 6 magic with 4 used in casting and 2 in powers. Made a good social chameleon and could hold his own thanks to high charisma = lots of spiritual back up and favors from contacts. My question with him is how do Mys Ads deal in the long run? Of course they wont be as powerful as either of their counterparts but how do they compare? Is the flexibility worth it? So far it seems like that but I have only had him for a few sessions.

Sniper/Communications Expert
I’ve had an idea for a Designated Marksman character who uses E.War to intercept enemy communications, cut them off, and then pick them off one by one. He would make sure the team stayed connected, free of bugs, and would lighten the load for the hacker to focus specifically on bustin nodes and taking data. I like the idea but I’m wondering is this a viable and most importantly useful character idea? After I do all the needed skills for this I would expect to have room left over for quite a few others and since he would be long range mostly I was thinking more outside of combat support and rarely taken skills (at least rarely taken in my group) like forgery and tracking.

So any answers?

Go for it. Sell corpses to gouls. I've seen it done before (actually, the PCs took "looting the bodies" to a whole new level).
Glyph
I dunno, I could see trading dead bodies for favors with a local ghoul pack, but if I was a squatter or some other kind of down-and-outer, I'm not sure I would trust a "hospital for the less fortunate" that had ghouls hanging around.

As far as the medical supplies, if you hit a shipment, you would have to worry about all of the stuff being tagged. Make sure the hacker gives it a good once-over.

Combat Medic/Support Mage

Mystic Adapt Face/Investigator/Summoner

Sniper/Communications Expert

Some interesting concepts.
The first has a lot of growth, it just depends on the morality of your character and if you are ok with selling the dead. There is the level of trust any who come to your clinic have about someone who is willing to sell the dead? Would they kill you and sell your parts if you had a healthy organs/implant they want or could use? Other people in this thread have already discussed this one.

The Mystic Adept -- Mages have a slow climb to power, but once they get going they are near gods. You are mixing and matching the best of both worlds. Lots of growth and potential for this concept. Check out the Pornomancer thread for what a Social Adept can do. It just make take a LOT of Karma invested in them to get them where you want them to be.

The Sniper -- this is only my personal experience. My first character (back in 1st edition) was a Sniper concept. While I love him and his personality, he didn't work well in the team dynamic. First off most of the time I was bored out of my mind. Secondly most Runs don't allow for you to ambush or have long, clear open spaces (where a sniper is at their best). They tend to be close quarters and improv once things get going. Once he got in close and was with the main group it worked out better, and I had more fun.

Just my 2 cents.

First off what was said about the medic. Maybe I didnt make it clear but he only does this to enemies. Its well known on the streets that the doctor is a nice guy, if not a bit twisted. If you need his help, even if your an enemy, he will patch you up. But if he faces you on a Run and you dont stand down he will kill you and strip you for parts. Everyone else besides threatening enemies on runs are basically safe from danger.

Ya I know how they can be Karma sinks which is why I'm using him in a very long game. Thanks for the link, that really helped with ideas for what I want to do. Like you said I made the character to mix the best of both worlds and in the test games we have used him in, before games we test our concepts in test runs so there are no regrets when we get to play, he was sterling. I probably love this one just as much if not more then the medic just because of how much I can do with him. My best example is when I used my con skill to distract some gangers while my spirit came up behind them and one shotted their boss. Needless to say negotiations kinda died after that but Mr. Predator made up for it.

Ya I see what your saying about snipers bout what about battle rifles? An example would be the m14 rifle. Its been used since WW2 and I'm sure I could find or create a shadowrun equivalent. Longer range then an assault rifle, shorter then a sniper. Basically a closer up sniper.

If that doesnt work out I was also thinking of a Troll Bow Adept. Any thoughts on that?

Excuse any obvious mistakes. In class and doing it while I wait for teacher to come back.

This all depends on how your GM runs the game. If they are cool with that then go for it.

Human nature, you can say you do only would carve up enemies, but there will always be doubt in peoples mind.

Person at the clinic: "What if I can't pay him, or he has some money troubles or I have an implant they want or someone they know needs?"

Once you go down the path of Organ legging there is no turning back. Sort of like teachers and sexual harassment. All it takes is the taint of suspicion, and the doubt will always be there. If you were not a doctor/caregiver it wouldn't be much of an issue, but since you are ...

If you don't mind a diamond in the rough that will take time to build, and a GM that is willing to do social stuff, this is good.

Having the ability to use long range firearms such as Long Arm weapons or a sniper rifle is actually a very good thing, but I just wouldn't focus exclusively on it. Go for a more firearms (ranged) guy. Think Quigley Down Under

Matthew Quigley:
I said I never had much use for one. Never said I didn't know how to use it.

I have only seen played a Street Sam Troll who used a bow in 2nd and then later in 3rd edition, and back then it was Ugly.

Loved facing a Wendigo (who could regenerate) and one shot from the bow and -- GM rolls regeneration -- anything but a 1 ... and it was a 1. A very anti-climatic end to the fight, we loved it, the GM was a sad.
