I thought that was around on the Battletech boards. in that any guilty of munchkin mech builds got a cow dropped on them.

I do recollect that story. AFAIK, it was brought to Shadowrun specifically by an old author, Blackjack, who wrote some great stuff (and regularly commented on Orbital Bovine Bombardments specifically). He's the first I heard that particular term from.
