Rigger
Appearances: Shadowrun 1st edition and Shadowrun 2nd edition.
Note: Other versions of the Rigger, including the Vehicle Rigger and Drone Rigger, will merit their own entries, but... this is where it got started.

Description
For generations, gearheads have reveled in the feeling of a powerful engine rattling their bones, just as console jockeys have thrilled as they soared through digital worlds, like birds with wings of fractal perfection. The rigger is the spiritual offspring of these two breeds of technophile, pursuing an experience that marries the virtual and physical worlds in a way that is simultaneously beautiful and visceral. Connected to her vehicles and drones through an implanted control rig and riding the dangerous carrier wave of hot sim, she feels the rev of the engine as though it were a heartbeat, the rush of the wind along her control surfaces as though through her hair, and every surge of fuel feels like a shot of pure adrenaline. Her senses are amplified and expanded, acquiring every detail of the real world, seeing those below like a hawk sees its prey. Most folks will never understand what she does or why. Never will. If you asked her to explain, she might just shrug and tell you with a sly smile that you'd just have to feel it for yourself, because there's nothing else like it.

And a voice like a howling wolf cried out on the wind, "Rise! Rise from your grave!"

My only issue is that some months ago (year ago december..?) the board lost track of which posts I'd read and which I hadn't. So I thought this was new until I saw a post from myself. nyahnyah.gif

Don't mind the thread/project necromancy. I got a little for focus from Aaron and decided to follow up on a couple old requests that were still sitting in my inbox gathering dust. Thanks to the folks who's written me about this project. No promises, but maybe I'll see what I can do to finish it up. Then maybe get it hosted somewhere...?

The offer to host it at Shadowrun Resources still stands.

Occult Investigator
Appearances: Shadowrun 4th Edition, Shadowrun Anniversary Edition

Description
In the sixth world, privacy is a valuable, and costly, commodity. Those with the means go to great lengths and spend mind boggling amounts of nuyen to protect their secrets. For those who are looking to dig up dirt on their competitors and enemies, few resources are as valuable as a good investigator. The occult investigator combines the traditional skills of a detective with magical talent, allowing him to discover things that his targets that they might not even know about themselves.

I really do miss the Priority System. Faster chargen, and sort-of balance: you could either be awesome, or rich, and it was hard to be more than one or two kinds of awesome.

While this very thread proves that you can make decent characters with the Priority system, it is a far cry from the elegantly easy-to-use one in SR3. With SR4 priority character generation, you wind up putting in as much effort as you would using one of the more customizable options such as karmagen or build points.

That said, the SR3 priority system had the glaring problem of giving you an ork or dwarf metatype for free if you were a mundane, and the net Attribute boost was fairly significant, in that the difference between a human and an ork was about the same as the difference between an A and B, or a B and C, priority.

I respectfully disagree, Glyph. I find Karmagen to be painfully slow. BP is better, but still not too quick. There's just too much fiddling around with too many options.

On the other hand, I can fly through a priority build in 10-20 minutes. Though, I admit that I tend to think harder and longer about certain characters (*cough*Burned-Out Mage*cough) than others.

At any rate, the most time consuming part of character creation, in almost every RPG I've ever played, has been picking gear. And it's even worse when you have a game like Shadowrun, because so many of the characters live and die by their gear. I find that the PACKS help speed the gear selection up a bit, even if they typically need some tweaking.

In the end, it's a matter of familiarity and how deep you want to dig to get the most out of a character. These character conversions are intended to be "grab-and-go." Easy to understand for a new player, but also functional enough for a more experienced player.
