So you're saying that the heal spell heals everything at cast point, but if something happens before it can become permanent, then all of a sudden, the wounds rip back open, and drop all that damage back on a character, potentially killing them if they've taken more damage since the heal "started."

Well. Good reason to target the PC mage even more now. Fantastic.

By RAW, Yes, pretty much...

it's not based directly on Force, but it is typically the case because the healing effect is capped by net hits which in turn are capped by Force.
Force caps hits, not net hits. Not that that matters much in the case of casting the Heal spell, but if you house-rule that particular mechanic, other spells will change dramatically (eg casting Analyse Device on a commlink would become effective at trivial Force).

Geek. The. Mage. First.

There's a reason they're targeted, even if they don't have any combat spells, they can still mess up your day!

Spirits alone... *Shudders*

Good point, thanks. I wasn't proposing a house rule, just a slip of the typist. smile.gif Just pointing out that there's a statement to be made about the intended setting when curative healing spells are the only spells whose drain scales as Force.

"damage they are healing" however is not the same as damage boxes the spell succeeds to remove. The Spell is healing a patient with a certain amount of damage. So it is the value before any effect that counts.
IIRC the number of boxes that are healed are never referred to as Damage Value.

Not only that but the whole sert of wounds cannot be affected by another Heal spell once one was used. Thus the Drain Code *should* be based on the whole amount of damage the target of the spell has received, not the portion that was healed.

Yep. This was true back in earlier editions too. There were times where you *really* wanted to get the sustaining period done and over with as soon as possible. Taking a while to complete the sustaining means more things can go wrong while you wait.

A smart mage will heal his buddy enough to stay and be effective and dump the rest of the successes into speeding up the recovery time.

Something to consider would be a regeneration styled spell that heals back X boxes of damage per time period up to a limit.
