I Hate All Life
I don't see how Born Rich is a problem. The player spends extra Build Points (10) so he can spend more points on resources. Note that the investment in Born Rich doesn't grant any direct advantage to the character, just the potential to spend up to 10 extra points on gear. Assuming the character maxes out how much he can spend (I imagine most players will), he's spending twice as much for that extra 5K nuyen.gif -- and the benefits of the quality drop even more if the player chooses to spend less Build Points on resources. So when a player buys Born Rich, there's at least 11 less Build Points -- and quite likely 20 -- that won't go elsewhere (attributes, skills, Resonance, etc.). It seems a player is setting himself back by taking Born Rich; that extra bit of money may come in handy, but that comes at the cost of inherent strengths.

We can split hairs on whether it's technically a quality or not, but honestly, is it a problem? Feel free to explain if I', missing something.

It's not an intangible aspect of the character, it's an additional cost to spend more BP on gear.

Unfortunately, there are lots of "qualities" like that.

Exceptional Attribute is relevant in that a character after chargen can continue to benefit from it - Born Rich does nada after chargen. It's not an intangible aspect of the character, it's an additional cost to spend more BP on gear.

So you're saying that, for Born Rich to be fixed, it should continue to benefit the character after character generation in a way other than having allowed them to buy extra gear, like letting them get some free nuyen occasionally or get something at a lower availability or something? I mean, that sounds more powerful than Exceptional Attribute, since if you're going to max out an attribute, let's be honest, it's so freaking expensive to raise an attribute that if you're going to max out your attribute you'll pay the extra 10 BP to actually max it out during character creation. I think the two qualities are just fine -- they both allow a person to spend more than the normal amount in a particular area by paying an additional cost.

That's my opinion anyway. smile.gif

15 BP actually, and it prevents you from raising 2 other stats by one due to this extra cost. Not to mention that anything but raising a stat to 10 is generally not cost effective pre-game (assuming you raise it to the max of course), if you go by the assumption that 1 BP is 2 karma.
Banaticus
Why 15? The quality is 20 and each point of an attribute (except the highest one) is 10 BP. So 35 points, basically.

As to whether extraordinary attribute is worth it, I agree, it's why I've never taken it as an actual PC. Some people take it, though, and some people go crazy on how much nuyen they can spend during character creation. Shadowrun caters to all kinds, I guess.
Glyph
Born rich, like restricted gear, is a quality that lets you pay extra for the privilege of being able to buy more/higher availability stuff. It merely brings resources in line with Attributes and skills, where you can soft-max fairly easily, but have to pay extra and/or buy qualities to hard max.

I agree with Glyph and the others... my reading on Born Rich, was it was basically the 'exceptional attribute' of equipment...
Only worthwhile once you've already maxed out equipment and of questionable use (since equipment tends to be easier to obtain in play... unless you are well and truly cash starved).

While the 'concept' of born rich doesn't merit a quality (more a contact or set of contacts). The mechanics of it are completely fine, though not something I'd generally take.

The only time I think it might come into play is if I was looking at making a character who blew 240k right out the gate on say Synaptic 3. (I tend to be more of the camp that you don't upgrade synaptic you rip it out and replace it with a new one... So even selling say synaptic 2 for half price used, and getting 3... it can be worth the extra 20BP (it means you're spending 70BP on resources instead of 50BP and only getting 60BP worth).

But we do, they are just not collected in one seperate forum (which would be a good idea):

{snippage}

And there more if you care to search for them.

Hey, Lars, my search-fu is weak at the moment (it's been a rotten week and I'm only now recovering). Is there one of these nice threads for Runner's Companion? I should like to subscribe to it as I have to certain of the other errata threads that concern me. Thanks!

Unofficial Errata: RC
Udoshi
Hey, is there an Unwired errata thread, too? No luck with the dumpshock search function.
Ryu
There is an official Errata on the official page. I would suggest to search for threads on specific rules if you have trouble afterwards; I donīt remember a dedicated errata-thread afterwards.

Thanks, Ryu.

... I understand it is (probably) to late to do so for the Runner's Companion reprint ...
RC is getting another print run?
