Full Version: OoC: Recuitment for PbP!

Mr. Mage
I should have my character done by 8 tonite definitely. As for starting, I'm good for starting tomorrow, but before we do I think we should lay down some ground rules, such as how to portray OOC and IC or what you want us to do for Dice rolling, etc. And a big one is how often should we be posting? There can be a major difference between posting once a night to once a week, but I should be fine wither way except for a week in August (camping trip with the family)...ooh...I suppose that's another rule to figure out. How to handle vacations where someone won't have access to a computer...
Belvidere
Alright, well I've going to work now, so I'll think about all the possible rules while I'm working. Let's just hop I don't lop off a finger and have it land in someone's soup! biggrin.gif I'll be back tonight and we'll have everything to discuss and whatnot. And you players are more than welcome to get a group consensus together for what you'd like
Mr. Mage
Sounds good to me. As for some rules...I found this little page someone made about PbP games...maybe it will be helpful. Mind you, it seems to be designed with DnD in mind, but I'm sure the basic premise will translate to SR...

HugeC
I guess I am interested in a regular game of SR. I don't typically go in for playing evil bastards, though morally gray is fine (hopefully I laid that out in my character background plainly enough). Other than that, I'm up for whatever!
crizh
Heh, I'd be interested if there is a slot left.

Haven't read the whole thread 'cos I'm at work but would like to get my foot in the door.

I'm easy about role to play or type of game...

"Though Morally gray is fine"? You know this is shadowrun we're talking about, right? Morals can go F*** rotfl.gif themselves...

I jest, I jest. I agree though. Downright evil is not my cup of tea, but with a game like shadowrun, it's hard to tell the difference sometimes, and I love games like that.

OK, here we go: Peter "Clef" Vasilyev

Appearance: Peter is an ork, nearly two meters tall but a bit slim for a robustus. His hair is dark and thick, cut short into a buzz cut that gets scraggly when it isn't trimmed. He has two studs in each ear and a silver ring in his septum. Miguel has a sharp, aquiline nose and a goatee beneath. He tends to wear bulky jeans and shirts, often emblazoned with sports logos--the Mariners are a favorite--or ork-empowerment slogans. The young man has no obvious cyberware.

SECOND EDIT: Hey! Free Contact points! Added another point to Etiquette, bought Matrix specialty for it.
Red-ROM
I have a character who's about to torture someone, he just kidnapped, with his hardware tool kit and a towel rack.
Not my normal M.O. mind you, but sometimes there's time constraints.

as far as what I like to play, I like the cinematic. I like good dialoug. I'm a fan of the old 80's dystopia where the megas are real bastards and the streets are real hard.
Ellipsis
Yipes that indeed went fast and it looks like I missed this boat! If you end up having a waiting list just in case life drops somebody out I'd love to be on it, just let me know and I'll make up a character to have on tap.
Mr. Mage
Okay, sorry I didn't get this on by 8:00pm....my family and I decided to go see A-Team (which was awesome!) but I finished this up as soon as I got home.
[ Spoiler ]

At the time of writing this, I was assuming we were playing in 2072...if we are doing a different date then some dates will have to be changed, but otherwise I believe it is complete!

Edit: Don't think I actually said it anywhere, but Thomas is Human.
Also, Knowledge Skills are: Subterfuge, Military and Politics (Underworld) and Languages are: English(native), Arabic, Russian, Celtic

Dennis Rend, a.k.a. "Scar"

Concept: Troll Organlegger/Muscle/Interrogator

Appearance: He's an enormous, hulking beast of a troll, and ugly even by trog standards. His face is a mass of old, twisted scar tissue. His prominent tusks jut out obtrusively and give him a brutish appearance even compared to others of his kind. His horns curve backwards off the top of his head and behind his skull. His appearance is typically unkempt and dirty, wearing ragged vending machine flats that have since started to biodegrade.

Edit: Just read back over his background, and while this character is par for the course for gaming circles I play in, I hope it's not too extreme for others. smile.gif

Well I'd say we've got more than enough muscle for our team! smile.gif Do we have a mage yet? I saw Mr. Mage is playing the face/B&E expert.

Martin_DeVries_Institute
Yeah, I think we're still waiting on Minchandre to do a Mage. Plus we have two adepts, so... fingers crossed, we'll be good on that part of the equation.
Minchandre
I'll have a char up in the next few hours, a Chaos mage. On the other hand, I'm not experienced with magic-slinging, so if someone more experienced wants a mage as well, I'm cool if the GM is.

It's not too hard... I can help you out a bit if you have questions.

Obbehobbe just put up some cheat sheets that could help.

Oooooooooooooh!
The Goon
If that last spot hasn't been taken yet I have a skydiving troll rigger/pilot or a good ole boy from the CAS that is an ex-military demo specialist.

I think they would both play to the pink mohawk side of things.

If either sound like they would round out the team I'll post their sheets up pronto.
Minchandre
Sorry I'm taking so long on chargen; I've never gen'd a mage before and the nuyen shuffle is particularly difficult (do you have any idea how much foci cost? nyahnyah.gif )

It's cool, I'll just drop out. I probably shoulda dropped out as soon as Bel said the game would be syndicate themed anyway, since I've never really cared for mob stories. Besides, I'm gonna be out of town most of the coming week and unable to post. Hope you fellas have fun!
horvagab
Is this still open? I'd be interested in playing an ex-Lone Star orc rigger, who wants to start up his own delivery and taxi company in Redmond, hence borrow money from Mafia, bad business, hence need for shadowrunning.
Minchandre
I'm really sorry to have waited so long and then dropped out, but Charlie just isn't coming together. I don't know why, but I just can't find a char sheet and/or background for him that I like. indifferent.gif

Same; if you have questions, just ask! The problem with mages is you spend all your points on magic, so they feel thin elsewhere. Just think "What would be cool to do?" And there's usually a series of spells that let you do that. A B&E Expert with Physical Mask, Trid Phantasm, and Influence is all you really need to break into most places nyahnyah.gif . Or maybe he uses fire elementals, and only has flamethrower and fireball. I haven't played a firebug in ages, but they're always fun.

-DrZaius
Abschalten
My old mage, Bane, got some seriously disgusting mileage out of Influence.

It got to where he would sit down in the back of a taxi cab and en route to the destination he would cast it on the taxi driver and tell make him think he's already been paid. Bane would step out of the cab and the cabbie would pull off thinking he just got a huge tip out of some sucker.

It also made a kidnapping very easy. Made the mark walk outside to investigate a "noise." It was Bane casting Influence via Ritual Spellcasting. Easiest kidnapping ever.
Minchandre
Basically, to what extent does my mage need to be good at everything? There's just so many magic skills, even more than anything else, and that's even before having to deal with the extra attribute. As a rule of thumb, how many of the 9 (or is it 10?) skills should I be good/decent/bad at? I also want to make a guy who has a few other skills (though he'll be fairly pointy).
Martin_DeVries_Institute
Hey, I feel your pain. Having to choose my skills as a technomancer was difficult... there's a lot of options, and I ended up not getting a lot of other skills. But it helps to keep in mind that Belvidere intends this to be a low-power game, at least to start with; so we don't have to start as gods. Just so long as we're half-way competent... smile.gif

I would say Enchanting could probably be ignored to start with. Arcana could be useful but I doubt you'd need much to start with. As for the skill groups, I'd pick one to be higher and let the other be a bit lower for now. If you focus on Conjuring in the beginning, you probably wouldn't need Astral Combat; you'd have spirits available for that.
Abschalten
For a slow-going PbP campaign, I would skip Enchanting and Arcana entirely.

For the Conjuring skill group, well... don't get the group. Get Summoning and Binding separately. Banishing is damn near worthless except in various fringe situations. You're better off taking Stunbolt or Manabolt for your "banishing" needs.

Astral Combat? Blegh. Skip it.

Now the meat and bones of your character ought to be the Sorcery skill group. Spellcasting, Ritual Spellcasting, and Counterspelling are all very awesome, tough skills to have. It wouldn't hurt to take the group at 4. However if you want to possibly skimp on some BPs you could break the skill group up. If you have to cut back on any of those three skills, make it Ritual Spellcasting, but just know that R.S. may not do the heavy lifting Spellcasting does, but when you need it and you have it, it is AWESOME.

Assensing, definitely. Get that at least at a 2 or 3.

I'm not sure of your guy's tradition or approach to magic, but for 5 BP you really can't beat what the mentor spirits give you. If you have an angle you want to play up and you find a mentor spirit that can augment your roleplaying possibilities or even your spellcasting specialties, then knock yourself out. For example, my LaVeyan Satanist Black Magician had Adversary as a mentor spirit. The spirit REALLY helped me push his approach to magic in an RP sense, and I found the combination of +2 to Manipulation and +2 to Counterspelling tests to be damn near broken in awesomeness. Yeah that disadvantage was a might bit inconvenient at times, but that's the price you pay. And other Mentor Spirits are just as good in an RP or gaming sense, or even both.

A few mentor spirits that might work with your original concept are Firebringer (SR4A), Mountain (SR4A), Seductress (SR4A, virtue of selfishness and all that), Adversary (Street Magic, for that anarcho-capitalist angle), Artificer (Street Magic, could be construed as a creative force as opposed to those second-hand people), and Phoenix (Street Magic, for that creative impulse thing).

I wouldn't worry too much about foci. If you want to get one, then a R:2 Power Focus is the power buy in chargen. It'll take you exactly 12 BP (50,000 for the price and 2 BP to bind it in chargen, vs. 16 karma outside of chargen to bind it.) Any test that calls for your Magic attribute gets pumped up by 2 dice. That's not too shabby at all, considering that helps for Summoning, Binding, Spellcasting, Ritual Spellcasting, dispelling sustained spells, etc...... None of the other foci, in my opinion, even come close to that sort of a deal in chargen.

Hope this helps. smokin.gif
Minchandre
Thanks for the help, guys. I was actually going to give my guy an R2 Power focus anyway, because I gave him focus addiction, and that seemed like the best choice. He's a Chaos Mage, though, so I'm not certain that a mentor spirit is necessarily a good plan - after all, he would essentially consider it to be an aspect of his own subconscious.
Abschalten
That's one possible way a mentor spirit can manifest. Don't take the MS aspect as being literal. Mentor Spirits can manifest in a number of ways. It can be a voice, a literal spirit guide, a totem, or damn near anything else you can justify.
Mr. Mage
Just my two bits for your mage....do you have Focused COncentration as a positive Quality? Being able to trow tons of dice into spells and spirits is a nice thing to do, but it isn't worth crap if you get knocked out by your own drain. I believe Focused Concentration costs 10 BP for each rank (Max of 2) and each on gives you a bonus die to all drain checks. IMO one of the best qualities you can give a mage.
Abschalten
It's only a good buy if you've already maxed out Willpower and your other Drain stat (since you can only max one and you have to soft-cap the other.) For 10 BP you could just buy another rank in one of those.
Mr. Mage
I suppose that is a good point...I usually tend to max out Logic (Hermetic Mage) and play not only the mage but the "bard" so to speak...as in "roll for bardic knowledge" for all of you DnDers out there....
da Loof
Your one free slot is taken, right? Cause I'm looking for a PbP.

I believe so...but then again, I have no idea, it's getting hard to keep track....lucky for me, I'm not the GM grinbig.gif

I PM'd the GM some time ago asking about the free slot but I still haven't heard anything back.

Same. Our GM has logged in daily since we last heard from him and he posted in another thread, but he's been avoiding this one. A shame. I was looking forward to playing Scar.

If I didn't have a full-time job and full-time school I'd probably be running a game instead of trying to get into one. frown.gif

Belvidere
To all those who've been posting here. Sorry for what's happened with this thread. Real life has been hitting me like a train wreck the last few days, something that very rarely happens and I've had very little chance to be on for more than a few minutes at a time.

My apologies to all, seriously, I feel bad for working everyone's hopes up. My life seems to be calming back down a bit now and I'd like to try and run this game. I've seen that a few people have either kicked up games of their own or joined in other games. Again my apologies and best of luck to any other games.

So if there is still any interest, PM me or post here.

Okay, well I'm going to kick up a new thread with an actual intro and title. I'll link it as soon as it is up to any who are interested.

Me as well. Take your time; part of PbP games is that occasionally people's real life comes up and derails things for a while. The advantage is, it's easy to remember what you were talking about when you start back up. smile.gif

And too all those interested here is the OoC thread!
