because.... people don't care what you look like on the matrix, and thats a plus for this character. There are almost -certainly- online classes and college degrees available in the sixth world. Running jobs on the side to pay for schooling is a classic way to start in the shadows, and get involved with problems trying to make more. In fact, I'd bet there are universities(or even shadow-schools) who, like docwagon, don't care where the money comes from - only that they get it.
Also, "Hey. I have a degree in that. Let me try" is a very good way to force the issue of "I know useful things! Take me seriously, and stop staring!" for her teammates to deal with.
Just some thoughts. That first session sounded hilarious.
