So.. guys.. I do have to make this request... initial scenarios are not a particular forte of mine, but I hate just going with standard 'you meet in a bar' routines... so any cooperation I can get from you to help this group collate as I'm stapling the scenario together is greatly appreciated!

eesh, enough office metaphors...

EDIT
IC post up. that took way longer than I wanted it to.... *crashsleep*

Or I would... if I weren't suddenly excited to get things rolling. time to force some sleep. Work will not take forum gaming as a sick excuse.

Couple of questions for GM

1)
Is there a permanent form of Nano Tattoos that doesn't involved a nano hive?

It just seems strange to lose a point of rating a week when a normal tattoo will last a life time.

2)
When do you expect initiation to be come available for the magical types?

]

Nanotats are nano because they can change. if you want to change your tattoos, the system that underlies that will degrade per normal rules, I'm cool with leaving the markings static from any work they've done. Does that make sense? The nanos that can change the tats degrade, but the tats are left behind?

Initiation... no specific plans to make it an issue yet. If you've got the ability to do so, (time, karma, resources, etc) you can do it.

Let me know if you want me to roll for Adelia searching for other articles on will-o-wisp. I'm not anticipating its critical to do so, nor am I wanting to waste your time creating extra background...its just something Aldan would do, even if there are no in-game ramifications.

Also, I have no problem with your office metaphors...as I'm in one way too much!!!

Not that I have anything major to throw down with Counterspelling 1, I am going to be prepared if something does get cast at me. I couldn't remember if Counterspelling was always on or not, so just in case it isn't, I want to be ready.

As a side note, Aldan is just asking to get hammered standing in this doorway without a weapon drawn and no spirit on standby:) But, he's not privvy to the ways of a shadowrunner just yet...

Standard yes, but I'm gonna hide it. Hazukashii kara.

Here's my Perception, if you need it:

1 5 6 5 1 2 5 3 1 = 4 hits

I'm obviously not trying to be sneaky, just standing in the doorway like a sitting gaijin...

EDIT:
I might as well check the astral, so I'll astrally perceive before I enter the apartment:

3 6 3 4 5 2 3 4 5 1 = 3 hits

Use those hits if anything crazy is seen... And if everything is clear or we start talking, then I'll switch out of astrally perceiving.

Haha...well, this looks like I could certainly be in the wrong place at the wrong time! We'll see if I can avoid getting hacked, manabolted and shot all in the next action from my future compadres:)

Just strange not that it matters.

I could see how something like a Hunter nanites would wear out after a few weeks.

For Nanotats I find that harder to justify.

Since for a real tattoo, the ink will last a life time. I doubt you lose that many nanotat nanites after a week.

Some how I pictured them more as a like Kindle and they only consumed power when they changed.
So I need to get some nanotats with a off switch. Only turn them on when I want to change the tattoo.

Say each change to the Nanotat uses an hour's juice. After 168 changes they lose one rating point.

I see where you're coming from on this. And it is unreasonable to assume they use their power constantly. I never assumed they did that, I pretty well assume they 'run' on available materials in the blood and body, nutrients we naturally have there. I don't see nanos carrying their own fuel, or batteries, or whatever, maybe they even run on bioelectricity like the new flavor on Cyber says it does. No, the problem is not fuels, the problem is the nanos themselves, they're foreign in the system, not only are they not maintained by systems like bone marrow or lymphatic nodes, they could even be *hunted* by those autoimmune systems. I presume that they are not, in fact, hunted, that would be a primary concern in their design, but a small amount of predation is probably inescapeable, and now that I think about it, possibly even engineered into them. There needs to be a continuing market, after all. By building in the imperfection, or even by relying on the natural entropic processes to work their way, they ensure continual sales. It's the same reason we don't have everlasting lightbulbs in every household, even though they exist.

All of this is hinted at in Augmentation on page 107... Well, at least the natural filtering, digestive and immune portion of it... I presume the 'engineered to be so' as business practice.

As I said, the 'ink' is forever, but the nanos that can change it around are not. I don't see much reason to change that.

Thanks for bringing up your concern on that! I always try to have solid reasoning behind anything like house rulings. Maybe there are certain grades of nanotattoo that really do last forever, or much longer than standard.. I'll have to think of ways to model that. Maybe alpha halves the degradation rate... Open to suggestions.

Kit's Composure roll

Charisma plus Will 12 316363455315 Five successes.

Kit unfortunately has seen something like this before.

Kit will rack his brain to see if he knows anything about the victims (rumored drug den next door perhaps)?

Any classic hallmarks of a yak hit...

I realize this is a very long shot here but who knows but I figure with a 7 charisma he would hear lots of gossip. Maybe a street etiquette roll (representing both his recall of Street info and his better than normal chance to hear it in the first place)?

If you allow the roll, Street Etiquette (Charisma plus Etiquette plus street specialization (leaving Tailored Pheromones off) 12 246545653465 seven successes before any modification applied (Knock off the first 8 dices for being such a long shot) would leave 2 successes.

The way I'm rolling now spells disaster when the drek hits the rotary cooling device.

From the detect life Is the apartment dweller still in there?

FYI he is using his endoscope to observe in detail while resting his forehead against the wall. He is also ready to active a camera neutralizer.

What vibes am I getting on the two at the apartment door and one inside? (from the detect life and the observe in detail (vision perception 8 -2 sustaining spells psyche +1 int, +3 vision enhancements = 10 dice 4615462112 = three successes).

So far it seems like no guns have been drawn. Correct?

And they all don't seem to know each other.

Anyone obviously magically active (will take a peek astrally but his Manascape spell will keep him from looking like an astrally perceiving magician/dual nature) Say a prayer for the dead.

He is ready to counter magic if needed (anyone).

Is the one inside the apartment match the renter or does he seem like somone?
Perhaps Kit caught a glimpse of his larger than normal body.

Are the others locals (both living and dead)?

How are they dressed?

I'll assume the smell of blood is very obvious for even a norm.

He might make a few quiet hucking sounds like he is trying to keep from throwing up.

Slight edit on the counts.

Let me know if he hears the word "bomb".<==== Edit: Never mind

A couple notes:
Ritual purity: In traditional Shinto, if someone touches a dead body, they're not supposed to pray at a Shinto shrine for seven days (at least). The rule may be less strict now, not sure. Edit: I'm having trouble finding evidence on Wikipedia, so I'll leave this to Java as to whether it's true in-game or if Isako's just got some funny ideas.
Hikikomori: a person who refuses to leave his own room for months or years on end. Makes taking out the trash a bit of a problem.

[ Spoiler ]
JavaLamp
As far as ritual purity goes, it only really applies for the real hardcore shinto, historical types, Neo-confucianism had any profession dealing with blood in the non-caste, below anyone else. It could be a rare trait outside of shinto/buddhist priesthood now... probably would be rare.

.... Couldn't think of a good way to emulate that form of address in English...

If everyone's okay with it, here's a quick primer on a few Japanese forms of address (far from complete)

the '-' assumes it follows a title or name, they're never used alone

The titles directly below can be used to address people who's names you do not know, but they each imply an age range and gender.

Onii (older brother/mister) An way to address a young-ish man (up into the 20s), or someone you're trying to butter up with compliments of looking young. Rather familiar, it assumes a less formal style of speaking. Rarely without an honorific (see the below)

Onee (older sister/Miss) Gender pair of Onii (above)

Oji/Oba - ('Uncle'/'Aunt') Useable with non-relatives, assumes middle age

Ojii (Grandfather) Appropriate also for use with friendly older men, use with care, implies old age

Obaa (Grandmother) Appropriate also for use with friendly older ladies, use with care, implies old age

-san - Mr, Mrs, Ms. Generic respectful tone, excellent way to start with someone, it gives the deference of 'I don't know you that well' or 'I respect you' depending on how long you know someone, addressing a friend as '-san' can sound distant and cold

-chan - diminutive address, assumes a close level of relation. Most often only used within couples, for girls, children, or pets. Even within couples, it will not be used for the guy unless he's... okay with it.

-kun - General assumption of 'colleague' or 'subordinate' Almost exclusively used for guys (excepting subordinate relations, where the boss will refer to everyone with 'kun')

-sama - High deference, used for addressing people high above you when they do not have a specific title to use otherwise. When used in a family it assumes a high level of formality. This honorific is also used in sarcasm, addressing someone lower or equal to you as 'sama' will be insulting, almost guaranteed...

There are a ton of these... and I've gotta go to work now, But that's a ... very basic primer
Yeah, they could've changed in 60 years, but it's not very likely Japan would lose it's society's 'vertical' nature.

I've addressed that, but it's likely to be a sensory overload for you, tons and tons of trash, with some commlinks, lots of optical chips and a ton of 'merch' Suffice it to say, the paper comics are the 'out of place' item.. nobody does paper books anymore

Good deal, that gets me what I was wanting to accomplish.

As an aside, based on how I was interpreting the spell, items of the same "type" would only be mentally listed once. I'd need to break the Object Resistance (OR) threshold to actually get a quantity of the item and I'd need net hits on top of that to get details. So, with me casting it at Force 2, I'd think my list would be similar to:

Trash: 3,000
Commlink
Optical Chip
'Merch'
Paper Comic: 1

OR 1 is for Natural Object and OR 2 is for Low-Tech Objects/Materials. High Tech Items (4) and Highly Processed (6+) I'd get a list if recognized (e.g. commlink, optical chip) but I wouldn't get a count as I only had 2 hits total. And seeing the trash and paper comic would need 2 hits just to get the count (assuming they are low-tech objects), I'd get no detail on them at all. And this does not help me at all to locate, I'd just know they were within a 2m radius of where I am standing.

Now, if I casted a higher Force, I could see getting a lot more detailed on each item, but it would also be a larger area unless I withheld some dice to bring the radius down. But again, just my interpretation, you've given me all that I was wanting to get with this spell, so that works!
JavaLamp
2 meter radius? there's 4 paperback comics in there.
deek
Yup, 2m radius. Okay, as long as I have the spell sustained, which I am planning to do while we are still "searching" the flat, just let me know if anything interesting pops up around me, otherwise, I'll just assume nothing important is around.

Has Kit identified the Otaku renter/recluse?

Also with his Otaku sub genre knowledge skill help him identify the type of Otaku that lived here?

Are the comic books out of place compared to the rest of Otaku collections at the apartment?

Finally does the other victims look like Otaku?

Is there anything that might place them? Tattoos, detective.cop shoes, gang signs, and such.

The comment that they might be undercover cops certainly gets Kits attention.

if it matters, just what security company does have the local contract?

BTW, great start!
JavaLamp
The renter.. you think you've identified him, he's the one with the incendiary by him, The others definitely fit the profile. They seem to be anime/manga otaku, judging from the merch around the room.

I hadn't picked what company was handling the local security yet, I'll set that today as they'll be coming into play.

If they are cops or gang members.. they sure don't look like it.

Paper comics are.. very odd to have around. But ani-ota were pretty much the final group to abandon paper, and some still hold physical printing in high esteem. It's something like music fanatics with Vinyl, which I'm imagining still has a following (though small). (I've done a considerable amount of thinking about japanese sub-cultures in setting this, a lot of which is going to come into play, most of the initial delay I ran into)

Thanks! I'm trying!
deek
I second that, very awesome start. As someone who in RL loves japan and spent a couple years in self-study to learn the language (too bad I have lost a lot of that knowledge in the past few years), the setting is something I'm really in to!!!

Keep it coming...I'd say you have 4 solid players that will keep consuming what you put out.
tarbrush
Yup, having a great time so far smile.gif

Anyway, just to say I`m probably going to struggle to get online again this weekend, got a rugby tournament so feel free anyone to post something appropriate for Isoro when it`s required. Hopefully this should be the last week of spoty connection.
tarbrush
Thanks for filling in for me smile.gif

Um. How big is the incendiary? Do I have any chance of picking it up and, say, putting it into the bathtub before it goes off?
JavaLamp
It would be difficult, it's hard just moving around in this apartment for all the trash (not even counting the bodies)

The device itself is 2 canisters about the size of 2 liter bottles with 'device' on each side, let's see... ~4kg for the liquid, another 2 for the canisters, and let's say 2 more for the 'devicing' 8kg total (around 18 lbs), not hard to carry, just hard to maneuver in here.

That is.. if you're keen on carrying an explosive that just displayed an error message.
TakayamaYuuko
Darn, both spellcasters are booking it. I was telling Java last night I hoped somebody had an elemental manipulation with water, ice, cement, whatever to encase this thing in. But now I realize that one canister at least may have oxygen in it so it wouldn't matter much. I also doubt the timer is in any way networking-enabled, as sometimes lower-tech is better. I know I shouldn't make assumptions, but still. I really don't know what to do.
deek
I had considered something of the sort, but with 6 seconds, I really didn't want to risk it. Plus, I really wouldn't want to put my own spirit in a suicide mission...they don't like that, normally...

Sometimes the best solution is just the quick and dirty...and in this case, we have 6 seconds to run like hell!!!
cndblank
Kit hasn't left yet.

He just wanted to clear the room for when he does leave.

Especially if he had to be pulling an oblivious matrix head along.

Since she does seem to be aware of the threat...

Let me make sure I have this right.

Your reasons for you requests do have some weight with the Kami.

This is what I'm planning to do and that is my roll on the summon a Water Spirit

Pass 1:
Free actions: Speak 1 free action (six seconds! run!).
Simple action: Drop sustained spells (Detect Life and Manascape) 1 free action (or if one free action per spell, he will use up a free action from pass 2)

One simple action left.

Simple action: Call bound Spirit of Man force four (Hearth spirit of Kit' apartment if it makes a difference in the form of a little old innkeeper with a broom dressed in clothes from a by gone century) on Standby 1 service optional power innate spell Trid Phantasm to attend him.

Pass 2:

If free action available will say some thing about Kami add us.

Complex action: Summon Water Spirit force 3 optional power Guard in the form of a Carp

Using Edge 8 dice (5 for summon and 3 for edge)

53554344 3 successes!

Spirit rolls Force 3 dice ()

Pass 3:

Simple action: Have the water spirit engulf (Carp swallows it) the device and take it to the bathroom and extinguish any fires started by that device.

Simple action: Now can I'll ask the hearth spirit to protect the building and those with in from the bomb.

Free action: RUN!

Are there any major holes in this plan that Kit would notice?

I was wondering if the accident power could be used by the spirit to break the detonation device.

FYI, Kit is magically active and has a force three health sustaining focus active.

By the way would clapping be an appropriate way to ask for the Kami's attention?

Finally I'll run this out IC but so far it looks like we are on Pass 1
tarbrush
Hmm, thanks. So is pooping oneself a simple or a free action then smile.gif
cndblank
Neither.

First you take the free action to runaway screaming then you check your composure with a threshold based on the dangerousness of the situation.

Grenade = threshold of 1
Greater Dragon after you = threshold of 4

No net successes means you lose bladder control.

Not getting half the threshold means losing bowel control.

I GM my local game and part of the reason I play PBEM is to learn the mechanics from the other side.

Funny, that's one of my major draws to PBEM as well. And I picked an Awakened character because magic is not all that popular of a choice for my players. In fact, the current game I am running has no Awakened characters at all. Not even an adept. So, this is certainly a great way to think through the rules and capabilities from the other side of the screen!

Plus, I've always enjoyed roleplaying, and a PBEM is usually a better forum to play with the descriptions, feelings and flavor of the setting.

Hey Guys, a quick update that's a bit late (just a hair bit)

I'm in LA (At Anime Expo) over the 4th, and will not be back and available to game until very late the 6th, probably the 7th.

Before that.. I was frankly blindsided by the 'koi swallows the bomb' plan of attack and was attempting to think my way through what that would do (long and short term) as well as the fiddly bits of rules in between.

Anyhow, I'm not ending the game, just on vacation (Yeah!)
