Interesting point. there haven't been many volcanoes activer BUT think of all the earth quackes in that region- Chile, New Zealand, as well as Japan

Yeah, this kind of activity fits perfectly with Ryumyu stirring shortly before waking up.
Maybe this is what made him awaken before Dunkelzahn. IIRC, Dunkie was quite surprised that he wasn't the first dragon to appear in the 6th world.

Another angle I've been toying with is the zombie/ghoul apocalypse that never happened canonically, but would be strongly implied by some readings of the current rules for Strain III and how this plays into the rise of the first megacorps.
Let's assume that a thing like that would happen at about the same time as VITAS hitting us, unnoticed at first due to its innitial appearance in some rural backwater in a region where everything is just breaking down due to the massive death toll of VITAS (Virally Infected Toxic Avian Shit-like I said, it's awakened bird flu in this setting).
The entire Western world would already be on the edge if the India/Pakistan region would sink into turmoil right now due to a pandemic that would dwarf the Spanish Flu. Coping with that would be hard enough.
Then, when it's just over, Western Africa, with its corporate involvement already being on quasi-SR levels, suddenly reports the outbreak of the "fast" type of zombie across the Gold Coast. After we have just learned about the Awakening from Dunkies first interview and slowly come to terms with the idea that Ryumyu wasn't a hoax perpetrated by anime fans with a surprisingly large SFX budget, people grudgingly accept the news as real and start to panic only moments later.
How do we deal with this?
The USA is busy enough keeping the situation in Pakistan from blowing up as tensions escalate when the Krieger Strain spreads to India and people on the subcontinent start to freak out.
France and the UK, with their limited force projection capabilities and traditionally strong interests in Africa, try to step in only to see large parts of their troops overwhelmed by infected warlords.
Shortly before the nukes start dropping on Lagos, PMCs with corporate backing step in and help to drive the infected armies out of the coastal regions and away from the mining sites, establishing an even tighter grip on the region and forming the basis for what later would become megacorps such as Ares, SK or Transys. The public is shocked about this involvement, but the situation leaves no other choice as mass hysteria about the "last year before the end of the world" boils up. Remember, it's 2012 and after what has just happened, all kinds of outlandish theories suddenly seem feasible.

This isn't even beginning to adress what is happening in the USA and Canada as shamans show up in native reservations and followers from across the country flood to these sites.
Even if the numbers are vastly below the 1% we get for Awakened in SR4, we're still at the very least talking about thousands of people across the country who receive visions from their "totems", mentor spirits who have traditionally beem active much earlier than those of other traditions, giving shamnism a significant edge as the first emerging magical tradition.
Initially, the shaman's reports about particularly strange lucid dreams weren't taken serious and they were laughed at as hippie furries, but the impact of a couple thousand magically active people congregating under the guidance of the newly formed tribal councils led by a certain Daniel Coleman is massive in a seemingly post-apocalyptic America where the upcomming electoral campaigns take on more and more alarmist undertones.

It was bad enough when I could convince myself this history would never happen IRL, now I'm imagining the "Year Of Chaos" for real...

I'm scared.
CanRay
I was born scared. Cold War, remember?

Humanity is a lot more stubborn that we give ourselves credit for.
Xahn Borealis
Eeep.
CanRay
Yeah, compared to having two superpowers sandwiched between your country about to sterilize the entire Earth, what's a few plagues, a First Nation uprising with Magic, and the Internet dying?

Bring it.
Xahn Borealis
;~;

PLEASE try not to provoke WWIII, if it's not too much trouble? I'm still young and naive enough to think we can get through this century without a death toll large enough to become statistical...
CanRay
Too late.

Heck, I'd like just to get through this decade without that...
CanRay
Well, it's either something like that, or we end up like Soylent Green. I'd probably be the cranky old bastard with the AR-15 on the stairs keeping the place safe from intruders.

EDIT: Wishing it was a M-14.
Xahn Borealis
Remind me, how long have we got 'til HMHVV pops up? I need to save up to get me some freezer time.
CanRay
Who says it hasn't yet?
Xahn Borealis
You're killing me, Canny. Won't you make the bad monsters go away?

They're already here.

We are the bad monsters.

And, as such, you have less to fear. Just be prepared to be even worse than the rest, and live with the consequences.
Xahn Borealis
So..... I'm the bad guy now? Well, shit. Brb, an hero.

Earlier today on NPR they mentioned that North Korean media has reported various supernatural occurrences since the passing of Kim-Jong. They didn't go into any detail but I think it's safe to assume dragons and volcanoes are somehow involved.

Perhaps Ryumio will awake in the Koren Peninsula instead of Tokyo?

Looking at it, I begin to suspect that canon is true (given), but has been made more literal for us to easily remember and digest it. And of course, there's a certain degree of flexibility with the dates.

Shiawise decision? Corporations are now considered 'people' with first amendment rights. Right to self defense presumably is covered as well, it's just not been explicitly stated yet.

NYC earthquake? Sure enough, the largest earthquake in centuries ran up the east coast. Coinciding with it is the largest reconstruction project in NYC that's occured in our lifetimes (the Freedom Towers), and a huge jump in surveillance.

The term "Native Americans" seems like it likely refers to something other than the ethnic group; another American minority which will be repressed only to see later resurgance (this also explains the apparent population contradictions). Maybe true Republicans?

Note to self: Count how many nuclear power plants are in the UK; Move FAR away.

Think that's bad? Sir Terry Pratchett used to be in charge of them.

A meltdown is surely imminent.

There's been talk amongst the tinfoil hat crowd that FEMA's setting up 'temporary internment camps' should there be an emergency via natural or manmade disaster.

The drug gangs in Mexico are getting nasty enough that I'm wondering why they haven't bought a few corporations yet to start buying up Mexico proper. If they themselves could supplant the government and stop the killing, I figure most of the populace would be right behind them. Cue Aztlan.

Who is to say they haven't? That's what fronts are for.

They probably own a few in the US and Canada as well. Japan is likely as well, with the Privacy laws there to help launder money.

According to canon sources, a few weeks at best.
Snow_Fox
The mxican gangs have bought police ofrces and the national government responds by sacking them and sending in troops. just before xmas they fired the entire police force of Vera Cruz and sent in mexican marines to keep peace- so you could head for a federal police state that way.
CanRay
So, the Narco-Gangs start paying off the Mexican Marine Corps?
Snow_Fox
unlikely, outside control by the marines, they don't have to live in the community so there isn't a hold over them that way

Sorry, but you can't win, you can't break even, and you can't quit the game.
Faraday
Well, you can quit, but I doubt you'll find it's much better than just staying for the duration.

No, you can't. Quitting is just another way to lose.

They're already here.

We are the bad monsters.

We have looked in the depths of heaven, and listened to the deep rumblings of the Earth.
We have found no paradise nor hell, no angels or demons, the only terror and hope loose upon the cosmos is ourselves.

I thought it was a complicated card game where the cards have no faces, played completely in the dark, when you don't know the rules, and the dealer is smiling... Constantly.

Well, that too.

Just in case it hadn't sunk in yet:

We are currently living in the Sixth World.
CanRay
Uh, not quite yet. We haven't had a dragon drag race a bullet train yet. The Sixth World won't happen, officially, until the Mayan Calendar runs out, or we can start killing people with our brains.

I'm in CANADA, remember?

The only people that have firearms are soldiers and criminals. And the soldiers have to keep theirs locked up.

...

Oh, and the police.

EDIT: Not quite true, lots of hunters up here, but it feels that way ever since I moved here.

More like he considered the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics as saying God was playing dice, and Einstein strongly objected to that.
