Full Version: Bonus dice...

IIRC there are absolutely no limits for bonus-dice, arenīt they? I know of the skillcap of 1,5 times your base-skill, but i cannot remember that there are basically any limits for additional dice from other sources. Please give me a short answer, before i start quickening a force 8 "combat-sense" spell. Thank you.

Dicepools cap at (Attribute+Skill) * 2 or 20, whichever is higher.

Optionally.

Question is of course how much use anything over that is.
And if you're willing to dish out the karma for that quickening when a ward or dispell or a ride into space will rob you of your high defense pool. nyahnyah.gif

Space travel happens only very rarely in our game. ^^ Regarding quickening we are houseruling the masking metatechnique, so no problem for me. Besides i could press through most of the barriers if i would have to. 8 additional dice for dodging are worth every possible effort.^^

It is fairly easy for Damage Resistance Tests to get past the 20 threshold.

A Body 9 Orc or Troll with Armor Jacket is at 17 dice already. Give him a Form-Fitting Half-Body Suit and he is at 21.

And it is definitely useful, when you get shot at with more serious weapons (anything with Full Auto, for example).

On the other hand a dude throwing 24 dice in a social test is probably just showing off.

I think dodging goes over soaking, because you need less hits. ^^
UmaroVI
Soaking is not a skill test and thus not limited by the cap.

is that Base Attribute or Augmented/Modified attribute?
UmaroVI
Base.

It's honestly not a very good rule. It rarely applies, and doesn't curb anything even when it does.

Could you tell me where I can read that rule?
BishopMcQ
SR4A. p. 61 Third paragraph under Dice Pool modifiers, just before the example.

It also makes some things, such as Edge and full defense, kind of problematic. In my opinion, it creates more problems than it solves.

And no one mentioned rockets and missiles!
(And the fact that you need something like 20-odd-dice to hit an unmoving, car sized target, on average...)

Please explain, i donīt get the point.

Right. In our last session i fired an Anti-Vehicle Rocket on a Rover 2060 and barely scratched him... with 6 hits on my success-test. At the same time my fellow runner fired a full-auto burst with the same number of hits with AV-rounds and completely destroyed it. Rockets suck.
NiL_FisK_Urd
No, the scatter rules suck. On our table, we use the SR4 scatter table and the contact-triggered grenade rules (WAR, p.140) for rockets and missiles, unless you fire an airburst rocket.
Machiavelli
Correct, expecially scatter-rules for weapons that are intended to do damage on contact like AV-rockets. ^^

A dice cap of 20 for skill + Attribute tests is not really needed, but not too disruptive most of the time. But what about the guy with 20 dice and an Edge of 7? Can he go over the cap with Edge? What about full defense? Can you go over 20 dice when you are rolling double your skill plus Attribute? What about adepts attacking with the Counterstrike power, or defending with Combat Sense? What about two opponents, one with 20 dice and one that would have had 30 dice due to extra gear/abilities/etc., but is capped? Why should the two be identical?

It's a crappy rule. If dice pools are too high, go back and fix the things (like empathy software) that make them too high, instead of plunking in an arbitrary cap that creates a lot of potential problems and logical inconsistencies.
Neraph
Glyph, I tend to agree.
