Well, that was startling. Just got an email from DriveThruRPG stating that a new version of the SR5 Core PDF has been updated! Go grab a fresh copy if you've paid for it, and let's hope this means some of the errata are in place and maybe a spellcheck got run. wink.gif
Fyndhal
Yeah, I just finished downloading it. Looking through it now.

And second, a fully corrected PDF—folding in all official errata-to-date—for Shadowrun, Fifth Edition has just been released. (For those who already purchased that item, you should be receiving a notification via email to download that new PDF.)

Since the only Official Errata to date is the anemic 4 page document that was put out months ago, I would not really hold my breath too much, but we will see. frown.gif

Hey, the street samurai isn't 200,000+ nuyen.gif over any longer, and the combat mage has an Edge of 7 like he's supposed to. All the typos have been fixed, and they've really cleaned up the vague or inconsistent wording on some of the rules. Combat spells do more damage but spirits are not as overpowered. Some augmentations are cheaper, and the rules for wireless and bricking have been drastically revised - they make a lot more sense now. Great job, Catalyst!

Why bother releasing this without a full and accurate update? What's the point? The errata is all available for them to pick from.

You seem to presume the errata is a full and accurate update, not a work of a single freelancer that he forced through the editing.

So what ARE the changes?

Mystic Adept Power Point Cost during character creation. [edit: Removed Submerssion. It is not fixed]

So what ARE the changes?

Primarily everything you saw in the 5th Ed errata they released, just now in the corebook PDF.

Probably touched up a few other points, but without a list for these it is a matter of flipping back and forth between the copies...

Out of curiosity: anyone received an email from Battlecorps.com/Catalyst?

I got one from randall@catalystgamelabs, but via drivethru.

And unfortunately I overwrote the old file, so no chance to let Acrobat compare the files...my favorite bug (armor bonus and encumbrance) was not fixed, at any rate.

For those that still have the old copy:
Keep it and download the new one separately. There exist file-diff utilities (a good Windows one is called Beyond Compare, the trial version is pretty decent IIRC) and PDFs are largely plain text. Well, the text is text; the images and stuff are stored as binary data. But Beyond Compare does a pretty good job of matching up the text sections. For the times it can't you can at least get a rough idea of where it is (nearby text) and locate it and compare side by side manually. I've done it on OCR'd documents (not gaming materials, but medical junk given to us by a client).

Got mine from Randall Bills, sent via Mandrillapp according to the mail's signature. 12. July 2014 21:14

Using the Beyond Compare we get the following:

8437 same line(s)
50 unimportant left orphan line(s)
43 unimportant right orphan line(s)
24197 unimportant difference line(s)
322 important left orphan line(s)
312 important right orphan line(s)
1103 important difference line(s)

1880 difference section(s)

I have to argue what constitutes important as my purchase code embedded in the pages of my file from DriveThru shows up as important difference, so the actual amount of 'important' differences is less than what is listed.
Which is pretty silly since I am trying to skip over these to find the real meat....

Anyway, the previously released 5th Ed errata has been integrated into this.

Some sections got bumped around.
Shadowrun Slang went from page 15 to page 8.

A LOT of the corrections are minor editing like capitalizing letters or fixing some spelling. Worldwatch becomes Wordwatch for example.

There is some weird ones though

QUOTE ( ORIGINAL 5th Ed Pg 433)
Tripod: The tripod provides a stable base to fire a weapon low to the ground with the user kneeling or sit- ting. A tripod can be attached to the underbarrel mount and provides 6 points of Recoil Compensation when properly deployed. Attaching a tripod takes one minute. Folding up or deploying a tripod is a Complex Action, as is removing it. Wireless: Folding up, deploying, or removing the tripod is a Free Action.

Emphasis mine.

So Folding up or deplying the tripod is a free action, so why bother going wireless since the bonus is the same. The only advantage from going wireless is removing becomes a free action (some kind of auto-release I suppose), but now it doesn't tell you how long it takes to remove without wireless (still a complex action I assume).

Another small clarification

Originally it states Burst-firing the Beretta 201T requires a Complex action.

Revised version lists Semi-automatic bursts using the Beretta 201T require a simple action.

So the actual effect has not changed, just how they explain it, ie.. SA is simple action, BF is Complex.
Larsine
They also swapped "All the Angels" page 328-331, now 374-377, and "Gamemaster Advice" page 332-377, now 328-373. Unfortunately all the references other places in the PDF still refers to the old pages, so whenever you see a ref for pages 332-377 you have to subtract 4 to get to the correct page.

Well the other option would have been to change the picture to a more human looking mage.

And unless my older copy is really messed up on one page (or I'm really missing something) since it wasn't listed apparently the sample created character "MegaPulse" still gets +2 to the Attack, Sleaze, Data Processing, & Firewall living persona attributes.

I love how they change the negative quality description for the combat mage, but don't fix his Edge, which is 2, and should be 7.

It doesn't though. It's neither the ork nor elf poser quality, it's distinctive style, and the mage has the physical mask spell. Personally, I think it's rather clever, and looking at my German quick start rules, that's how they treated the adept, too.

Now, that it violates the rules of the physical mask spell is a whole different story wink.gif

Exactly, it does a metatype poser the wrong way. If somebody wants to play a particularly delusional character who believes himself a troll that's OK, but it's a bit of a rule hack and nothing which should be used as an archetype.

YMMV, usually proportional to how close to RAW you want to stay.
Personally, I'm more amused by the (now) wrong TOC. In late SR4 books the TOC was a bad joke, and obviously a lot of effort went into doing it right in the SR5 core ... some of which is now wasted, again.

Jason Hardy is the line developer, ultimately everything falls on him.

My understanding is that layout and editing is largely treated as hands-off. I know proofreader fixes are sometimes ignored, but I believe the editors are also told to take a more passive role. Which is a crying shame, because a good editor can really bring out the potential in a given piece of writing. An editor should be an active part of the process, and probably the single most important collaborator. This looks awfully like a rubber-stamp process, where the editor is only allowed to look for gross errors, and then passes it on.

if shit happens, somebody IS to blame.
either due to doing something wrong or not doing something he was supposed to do(neglect)
if the editor does not edit, then yes, he is basically at fault. if he was told not to, then somebody above him is at fault.
