I think the implication was that flechette ammunition is quieter than "explosive" ammunition when it hits, out of the two types of ammo that primarily revolve around "do more damage." Of course, the whole "explosive ammunition is noisy" thing is an interpretation of fluff, but it's not hard to see where it comes from.

*facepalm* Maaaaagic, but of course! So I take it the impact silencing is effected by nuclear space monkeys?

Shyeah, duh. Geez, man, do the dev's have to spell EVERYTHING out for you? The space monkeys resonate with the Unobtanium used to make the densiplast so dense, and also allow it to change its physical properties based on the needs of the writers.

No wonder the crap costs 10 nuyen.gif a round...

Okay jokers, enough of that.

Most of those guns are described as using either compressed air or normal propellants with shards of metal or carbon-based polymers, often even shed from a solid block of material you load it with.
It's a pretty common idea in Near-Future and SciFi.
And the basic concept is not THAT stupid, it just needs either a good power-source or a high-power propellant.

'magic plastic' all right ..........

Btw, the impact sound is low as you have a lot of small impact with small front surface impale the target instead of large impact solid slucks. Damage is done when the shards tear into tissue, resulting in wounds that resemble burned craters.

This may come as a shock to you, but a lot of stuff you see in scifi is just that stupid.

Read what I said, then you'll see I won't really argue 'stupid'. I only argue 'less stupid than 9mm conventional flechette. 'Hope that helps understanding what I tried to say.
Though you might find the conventional way of 'read -> think -> post' even more succesful should you finally try it.
James McMurray
Expecting someone to read "compared to other stupid stuff" into "the idea isn't stupid" is a bit silly don't you think? Turning it into an insult is even sillier. Targetting AE with it is even sillier, as he's one of the few people around here that never responds to something with an off the cuff answer.

But apparently you will argue THAT stupid. As will I, because I maintain such ammunition would be THAT stupid.

That's like saying "makes more sense than a nerf ball railgun." The "needler" gun is still a bloody stupid idea.

New Nerf Railgun! First we use hyper velocity magnetic rails to speed a small piece of lead foward and right before it leaves the gun we cover it in a nerf dart!... BRILLIANT!

I won't argue taste vs. taste.

If you dislike the idea of such weapons, fine - but they are a valid way to explain the flechette rules, probably because those rules were inspired by those weapons (Cyberpunk, BattleTech ...).
I simply accept them as part of the background, like the Hacker-friendly Matrix, Dragons acting at the INT score of the author or GM, and sloppy security and police forces that will not waste the whole party if they make even a small mistake.

If I'd throw out Needlers, I'd have to kick all the Flechette Handguns as they'd not make much sense ... as well as those things mentioned above and many more.

I'm not arguing taste either. All I'm saying is you can't really apply common sense to a piece of equipment that makes no sense. You can give said equipment any characteristics you like, no problem there, but to say that the characteristics you picked are the sensible ones in such a situation is a bit disingenuous.
