Tinker, if you didn't pick it up before, as we scout Hellcow is occasionally checking through different sight modes, as well as the geiger counter.
TinkerGnome

Geiger counter is negative. I'll need to know everyone's position with a little more clarity. There is forest virtually everywhere on the map, and the highest point is at the guard shack. The mining area is on a plateau, and the dump site is down the hill from the plateau. The group arrived from the bottom of the map.

Hmm, should I bother with a bunch of Astral Perception Tests for Bel and his Watchers to get any detail from inside the mine? There's only a +2 TN penalty for it by default on top of the mild background count you mentioned, though that should be offset a little by the fact that it's natural stone down there.
Also, is the nature of the background count in this area capable of being Clensed (via the Clensing metamagic technique)? Not the entire region, just localized areas such as where we decide to set up camp, defensible locations, etc. Additionally, I'm looking for good places to set up an alarm ward, post watcher guardians, and otherwise help secure the site as much as possible.

I'll stay topside; The team that goes down should take the spider drone with them. Who wants to carry it?
JaronK
Jun 19 2004, 05:35 AM
We should figure out which team goes where as soon as possible. Paris can function equally well with either team... topside, his rifle can keep most enemies at bay, and inside he's got an assault rifle to help the team out.

The knowsoft (should someone bother to run it) tells you that the survey system has to be run from the surface. The sample extraction will have to be done in the mine.

The place is oddly slient on sensors. Well, not really oddly in the grand scheme of things (the whole forest is quiet). But quiet because the team is on edge and expecting to get jumped.

The congregation is at the end of the main shaft. Your watchers saw the same grouping as Belfast did, but they ran when threatened by the spirits.

Not exactly on topic here, but...
I got into an argument with my online gaming group. I now would very much like to avoid the bastards, but I have trouble finding any new groups. It's easy to get a game running her on dumpshock, but the pace is a bit slow for me. And I need a gaming fix pretty often, every night if I can help it.
Anybody have any online groups I can join? I play shadowrun (duh

) but I won't mind trying anything new. I'm pretty desperate too.

I think we're waiting on 3 things
1) Whats moved these rocks, a decent investigation (though i suspect a red herring)
2) Belfast to come back and give us the heads-up on spirits stuff
3) Belfast to come back so we can split up the teams, an exploring team and a rearguard

Astral Perception Test (Aid Power +5, Astral Pool +5) (TN 5): 7 4 3 8 11 3 1 1 9 11 4 2 4 1 3 5; 6 successes
On my way, I'm also going to talk with Gimcrack (force 5 Great Form Gnome with five services), spending four of those services to "request" answers about this place and what he thinks may be involved, as well as using him to help understand what I'm seeing. The final service will be a humble request to form a gestalt with me.
Channeling Test: (Aid Power +5, Elemental Bonus +2) (TN 6): 5 1 5 5 1 10 1 8 4 3 5 7 4 7 9; 5 services (50 minutes duration)
If you want to jump ahead to the rock survey, here's the perception test for that as well...
Astral Perception Test (Aid Power +5, Astral Pool +5, Elemental Bonus (Metal) +2) (TN 5): 2 4 9 4 4 1 10 1 2 11 2 10 8 5 4 1 3 5; 7 successes
If Gimcrack's answers were of help previously, I'll call Candlewick (force 5 Great Form Gnome with six services) over to see if I can get any help from him as well (but only going to use two services at most).
Edit: Edited in another Perception Test just in case.

Does Bel have the know-how (Magic or Druidic Background?) to know how to align the stones properlly? Or what the reprecussions of that would be?
TinkerGnome
Jun 21 2004, 07:53 PM
Bel could probably figure it out, but it'd take several days to get the alignment right for any kind of high magik. In a few hours he could probably cap the ley line well enough to eliminate the background count, though.
All in all, there's not much you can do with ley lines without specific metamagics and probably draconic teaching.

Do remember that taking samples is only part of the assignment. There was also a set of survey drones to be used. Their activity is half surface level and half mine level.

Background counts aren't terribly bad. Fixing the circle did forestall a rather dangerous encounter, though.

Hey man, we're counting on you for support if things get messy topside, which I feel will eventually.
You got a radio or some form of comms? It should be fairly rudimentary to call in once in a while. Hell, I'd bring a watch comms and do that snazzy 'Ghost Reporting' starcraft voice when I call in to check up on the others

He's got a Tranciever, but no encryption, which is why he speaks slightly in code when he speaks on the Tranciever. But most of what you guys have been saying doesn't seem to have been over the radio anyway, so he actually can't hear you folks. I'm sure he'll get something to do soon enough, but in the mean time, at least he thought to bring along a camo sleeping bag so he could be comfy in his little nest.

@ Panzer
Could you explain your statement OOC? I don't understand how a character can off spirits karma?
Panzergeist
Jun 22 2004, 10:48 PM
Okay, so we really don't want to go down there. I suppose Belfast sending an army of spirits down there is one option if we have to fight them, which I don't want to do.
Two more sensible options for gathering information come to mind. First, we could go look for those rednecks and try to capture one and see if they know anything about the mine. Second, perhaps Thor's spider drone could go down there. How hard would it be for the spirits to notice a spider drone from the astral plane?
TinkerGnome
Jun 22 2004, 10:54 PM
Free spirits can be given Karma by PCs (in fact, it's one of the only ways they can get karma). If you've ever dealt with free spirits, you might even use those terms for it.
However... who ever said those were free spirits?
Shadow
Jun 23 2004, 03:24 AM
Let me clear up what I was talking about. Karma is not a real-life term in Shadowrun. It is purely a game mechanic. To mention it IC is sort of silly because you can't 'pay karma' IC for anything.
But I guess no one else thinks that way.
Chance359
Jun 23 2004, 03:37 AM

TinkerGnome
Jun 23 2004, 03:38 AM
Depends. Some spirits might use that terminology. Which is why I qualified it as "if you've ever dealt with free spirits"

Mainly, I misread your OOC comment
Beast of Revolutions
Jun 23 2004, 03:56 AM
Actually, I think I recall an IC bit in one of the game books which mentioned karma. Some essay by a professor of thaumaturgy at some college, posted on Shadowland by Captain Chaos.
As for scouting, let's not risk my precious spider against those aweful drones. Let's send one of the survey drones. Or Skeeter. Speaking of which, how many survey drones are there?
TinkerGnome
Jun 23 2004, 03:59 AM
Considering that you still have half the survey to complete, sending the survey drones to their death might not be such a hot idea right now. There were three flying and three tracked drones, though they each have different hardware.

Well there's your vote. I think you can count on 2 more votes, and probably another 2. Looks like it's just waiting for an IC suggestion.
Of course sending Skeeter in accomplishes very little. He either 1) Dies and torques off the spirits in the process. 2) Learns everything you want to know, but won't remember to tell you, or won't be able to explain it ti you. 3) Learns nothing and torques off the spirits but manages to live and resent everyone who sent him to an almost certain death. 4) Skeeter gets possessed and kills everyone one by one as they sleep.
Anyway, Skeeter might just surprise you. He has a few aces stashed safely away.

Everyone who responded knew what you were talking about. Since you have a problem with it, how would you suggest they phrase it? Someone could argue with about any term you care to choose.
What are the spirits supposed to request? "That stuff you acquire through being a fully sentient being"? This should sound even better.
Why NOT use a term everyone is familiar with OoC, and that has a chance of having the exact right meaning IC? What does Karma mean IC?
Quit splitting hairs. You are ruining your own suspension of disbelief. And bringing up things that don't fit your view of shadowrun sounds whiny. "Remember, there are no walls in Denver." I have a right to use that quote, I caused it. At least I got over being so anal retentive about things. Well, almost.
