It's sooooorta like Rifts...Except. Eh. Well, it's hard to explain. But it is one of the earlier tabletop RPGs. Might be defunct these days, but not sure. I mainly learned about it from my cousin.

[I believe he's referring to the class abilities/ability to advance you lose if/when you break your alignment/code. These *are* clearly defined, although many house-rule them out, along with most of the alignment system.
QUOTE | "Alignment is a tool for developing your character's identity. It is not a straightjacket for restricting your character." (PHB ver 3.5, pg 103) |
I always found it rather ironic that they say this, but turn around and put alignment restrictions on most classes. Even further, two classes require you to atone when performing an act against your alignment, which is a specific spell with its own material cost. I'd say that's pretty "clearly labeled."
|
If it was a penalty for changing an alignment, it would be unilateral across all classes; a Fighter would loose their feats and Rogues' their sneak attacks.
But it's not a penalty for changing an alignment. It's a penalty for forsaking that in which imbues the character with strength. It just happens that a Barbarian's Rage, a Paladin's Lay on Hands, and a Monk's funky munchkin powers all come from their unique world view and code of beliefs. Otherwise known as an alignment.
I can't see a paladin's god saying to itself "You know even though he's stopped coming to my ceremonies or even observed prayer on his own, started hanging out with the Thieves' Guild, and didn't save that town from the rampaging monster because they didn't have enough gold... I'm still going to grant him spells."
And on the otherside of the coin, a Barbarian without Chaos is not a Barbarian. He can be a barbarian from the hinterlands all he wants, but if he forgoes the spark of his rage, he will never be a Barbarian.
And to bring it back into a Shadowrun metaphor: if a runner turns on his Johnson, that Johnson isn't going to hire said runner again enless the Johnson's under some very unusual circumstances or the runner has atoned for his actions and earned the Johnson's trust anew.
Now, on to Mul Monster Ranchers and the players that love them. Estimated time before thread lock-age: two hours, six minutes, and thirty one seconds. Give or take 48 hours. My psychic senses are a bit off today.

Half human, half dwarf. Sturdy and strong creatures, but they're sterlie, breeding them takes magic, and usually kills the mother.

I feel the biggest mistake the GM made in the above mentioned story was one that is as old as roleplaying. He didn't let the PC's succeed... Let me explain...
Yes pc's screw up and such, and yes, sometimes they should be allowed to fail. But I play with a very fast and loose rule my players don't know about. If they come up with a plan, I CHANGE my run to make it have a chance at success.
If your players decided that questioning the people in the club was the way to go, there needed to be a guy in the club who knows whats going down. It would have been a great scene for your players to question everyone, then they see an elf starting to look nervous as they work their way through the crowd towards him. Then, just as they get within 10 feet of him he takes off.
As they pursue this elf through the crowd, dodging dancers and couples they notice he is heading towards a door leading to an alleyway. The man bursts through the door and says something to the elf with the Jazz. The sam in the alley realises something is up, as his two companions come rushing out behind him... BAM combat insues as a car from across the street turns on its headlights and begins to drive over... the players better subdue this guy quick, and get him out of here for questioning.
This gives you a fight scene, a chase scene AND a hook to get them back on target!
