Matrix 2.0! An all-new level of wireless “augmented reality” overlays the real world, unleashing hackers to be mobile digital wizards. |
I know this was just released and that nobody knows anything they can actually share at this point, but this quote jumped out at me. For years people have run games where the Matrix was something for NPCs, and players have complained that decking was to difficult or took to much time from other characters. This snippet makes it sound like they've worked up a way for deckers to be more effective on-the-go.
This is very neat. I had been working on a hacking system for my d20 cyberpunk homebrew with a mission statement that very much resembles the quote above. It'll be interesting to see how closely my concept matches theirs (if at all).

Yes, it'll be nice if the propeller heads can move along witht he party in RT and hack open doors as they go (though this would make electronics B?E specialists less neccessary)

"augmented reality that overlays the real world" makes me think of those tech articles people posted months ago about Honda engine techs using VR monicles that super impose technical schematics over the engine as they look at it.
imagine moving through a room and seeing a machine of some kind:
- the mage sees a machine
- the sam sees a machine
- the decker sees a machine with VR control pannels super imposed over it and VR data flows moving in and out as it does its thing....

It could also be constantly building hyperlinks to people's info. If you have this augmented reality gear, either worn or implanted, it makes sense to have some kind of RFID chip to unique identify yourself.
Think about the degree of control megacorps could have with this.
Or the fact that you could meet somebody and have an overview glance of her social status, friends list, calendar openings, etc etc...

take it a step further, thatpaolo. you could call a taxi by looking at one as it passes--if that one's occupied, it'll route another to your location. go to a restaurant and decide what you want by downloading short simsense clips of someone else eating various menu items.
they really need to massively simplify the decking rules, though. everybody's going to be part-decker.

All we need is a machine that'll transfer said RFID chip into senting BTL signals, and we'd get a cheese Syndicate Wars remake.

I hope it's not as messy as it could potentially be. SR1-2 Matrix was a pain with it's silly level of useless detail.
On a side note, I still like the idea of a decker plugged-in somewhere running the overwatch or having to get him to an inside jackpoint.
/hopes they don't ruin something for sake of nothing better to do.

I just noticed that they used the term "hackers" in the release rather than deckers. Maybe that's just an easier way to get the concept across to potential new customers.

I had this funny idea that deckers would behave like "tech" mages, like in say Anarchy Online, or the techno mages from Babylon 5, that simulate magical effects by using technology.
That would suck.
But the ideas here are more interesting, so there's hope...

you might be able to get higher speeds on a land-line, and you certainly won't need to worry about broadcast encryption in that case. i think there'll still be a place for sit-and-drool deckers, albeit a greatly reduced place.
what i want to know is, are they finally going to knock down those stupid walls between decking and rigging?

It would be insanity to have the security measures for your most critical areas on a host that can be accessed wirelessly, unless if its "wireless hotspot" only broadcasts & receives far enough to cover one room, and even then I think most security experts would agree it'd be better to make users actually physically connect.
More likely, what you'll find on the wireless accessible networks are the bits of data that most people would normally find usless, but a crafty decker can exploit. You're doing an extraction run on some high level exec, but he's not in his office? A check of the division's master planning schedule says that there's a meeting on the 5th floor, and list his name as one of the attendees. That sort of thing.

If everyone is part-decker and is experiencing this Matrix overlay on reality, you are going to get a technomage effect. Someone puts Scrambler IC (or whatever) on your image, suddenly other people can't see through the Matrix overlay on you: technoinvisibility. Or imagine triggering an IC attack just by looking at something (the overlay says "If you can read this, you're dead.").
EDIT: This is actually sounding a bit more like GitS.

Or maybe it's because decker has become a deragatory term for someone who actually jacks into a cyberdeck and vegs out in the meatworld.
