Full Version: One trick ponies...

I remember on the other threads where it was discussed that certain rule bound characters could be created that could break the sound barrier on foot, but that's about all they could do.

For the heck of it, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on making characters that were just as uber in a single thing, only for other tasks i.e. could anyone make a character that could leap a tall building in a single bound but really do just that, or shrug off artillery fire without armor and do not much else, or was so charismatic that even dragons would bow before them?
Critias
Yeah. Mostly they're called Adepts.
Kyuhan
Well no kidding. It's just that in order to make said uber fast adept, a lot of rules lawyering was done which really impressed me, and I was just curous if anyone had other ways of adapting it to different situations.

There have been many threads on min-maxing on these boards. The most popular ones seem to be making the ultimate speed sammie, and making a troll with the highest Body that you can get. But there have also been threads on melee specialists, maxing dice for spellcasting, making the ultimate face, and all other kinds of things. There have also been any number of generic munchkin-making threads.

Depending on the specialty, being "the best" at one thing doesn't automatically mean that the character is only good at that one thing. For example, a Resources: A sorcerer with two specific spell foci and a combat-oriented Totem could cast an incredible mana bolt, but still have etiquette, stealth, and pistol skills, and a number of other useful spells such as heal, invisibility, levitate, etc. Even a twinked-out speed sammie could have an eye camera or skills such as electronics or demolitions.

Ahhhhh, specialization.

Our group once figured out how many cybereyes you could pack into a starting character:

Does that count?

That's the kinda stuff I was looking for. All for a lark anyway, I was just interested to hear some formulations.
The Other DSE
Although I'm sure that it's been topped or eliminated in SR3, I one time created a "highlander" style character in SR2 response to a challenge from a friend of mine.

The bugger was rolling ~27 dice or something ridiculous every time he swung his sword (ah the bad old days when adepts could have a force 3 weapon focus bound at character creation).

Does that count?

You still can get weapon focus at chargen, so long as you have spell points to spend in place of karma and the nuyen.gif to burn. In short, any non-adept awakened can carry the nasty things.

How about the dude who can hold his breath forever? An adept with Water Sprite [5] and Iron Lungs [24].

Real useful, so long as every single run involves falling off a bridge/boat and staying under for a long time while baddies shoot into the water then write the adept off as dead, only to have him come back and surprise them later.

[or you could just get an internal air tank.]

Actually, Magicians Way Adepts can take them, just use your 6 Force per PP to bind up a Weapon Focus, spend the rest on standard powers.

You can only buy levels in adept abilities up to your Magic Rating (SR3 p168). So Iron Lung [24] is not possible unless you are an 18th grade initiate.

Elf PhysAd; charisma of 8, strength of 6.
Delayed Strike: Silent.
Killing Hands: Deadly
+4 dice to Unarmed Combat.
Geas: Must not use any of above powers in an obvious manner.

All of the social edges.

This is the ultimate assassin PC. Just charm your way into wherever you want to go, shake hands/brush against the target, and read of his mysterious death in tomorrow's paper.

Troll Shotgunadept:(Str: 10, Qck:5)
Improved Ability: Shotgun (6 dice)
Improved Reflexes III
GEAS: must wear silly granny glasses.

Lightning Reflexes III (edge)

Give this character a burst-fire shotgun, or, if you prefer, replace "shotgun" with "heavy weapon". If I'm not mistaken, an Ensfield AS7 will fire off 2 bursts a turn, each doing something along the lines of 10D damage; Gas Vent IIII plus natural recoil comphensation (strength ten gives 2 points, I think; I'm not too sure), he should be able to negate any recoil penalties. Flechette and explosive ammunition will increase this damage to the point of insanity.

The best legal speed sammie has a base reaction of 30-32, and +4d6 initiative. That's pretty damn fast.

My best legal brick wall was a troll with an effective Body of 29. Of course, he came out with 1 skill point.... embarrassed.gif

Otaku. There are so many possibilities of a one trick Matrix pony with an otaku.

Lately I've been toying with the idea of an Otaku with an RC deck. Without canon rules for an otaku rigging a CCSS system, it is currently on hold.

3 points if i recall correctly. It was 1-4:0 points, 5-6: 1 point 7-8: 2 points 9-10: 3 points, and 11+: 4 points. I don't recall it going higher in the rules, but i guess you could houserule it for every 2 points or whatnot.

I've seen a lot of the adept one-trick ponies with pouring all assets into the Improved Ability, etc...and just how folks put their skills...one character i saw was Super Sniper(all rifles and stealth, non awakened) but barely used any of the BP for skills so didn't have much else.

Hell, I even saw the Social one tricks...they could talk about anyone into or out of something(all points on social skills) but couldn't do anything else; great to have on your side til you got sick of making sure they didn't end up dead.

and about the legal speed sammie...wasn't it +5d6 Init(boosted 3 and Synaptic 2 are compatible). Still one trick tho, all points go to breaking sound barrier biggrin.gif

Cannon Companion (page 103) has a chart ...

1-5 = 0
6-11 = -1
12-18 = -2
19+ = -3

The real problem there is that Otaku at chargen never get more than 5kY in resources. There is honestly a good reason for this: an otaku with a Math SPU, an Encephalon and a Cerebral Booster at chargen has something like 12 Hacking Pool.

Actually, it's 4d6. Wired-3 gives a higher base reaction bonus, offsetting the extra die.
