Full Version: Insect Spirit/Guard Paranimals

It's been a while since I read Threats 2, but I seem to remember something about Ares investing guard paranamals (hellhounds, bogies, etc.) with insect spirits. From what I remember, it seemed like the powers of the original animal were reduced by the power level of the bug spirit, and that didn't make sense to me. A bargheist possessed by an ant spirit (with Paralyzing Howl 3, and Venom 3) would be weaker than either the basic bargheist (with Paralyzing Howl 6) or a mundane dog invested by a Force 6 bug (Venom 6).

Am I mis-remembering this? If not, what's the point of investing the guard animals?
Garland
I don't know about the power reduction thing, but the main point (at least that I got out of it) of investing animals is that it makes them intelligent and "obedient".

EDIT: Slight clarification.

There is no power reduction, however the powers themselves sometime derive from different Attributes - Howl from Barghest essense and Venom from spirit force. There is also loss of powers in the case of a non-good merge.

the fact that you can make a lot of your paracritters fly is probably a big draw.

plus, you know, bug-dogs that breathe fire. how can you not want one?
BitBasher
I believe they have a hive mind and immunity to normal weapons too. Eek.

That's what I was talking about. What are the rules for this? Of course, in cases of good merges, you won't have any bug characteristics (except for lowering the mental attributes to the bug's force) and if you get true forms the critter gets eaten and so you wouldn't get the critter's powers.

Obedient, yes. But probably not much more intelligent than before. Anything above a force 4 bug and you'll probably end up with a true form, not a merge.

Agreed.

Only true forms get immunity.

Threats 2, end of the "Treachery" (not sure, that's a literal translation from German) chapter, has these rules.

"Betrayal" in the english version. close enough.

The creature retains a number of powers equal to the following table:
CODE
Host's net successes  Number of powers retained
         0                         0 (True form)
         1                         1
         2                         2
         3                         4
         4                         6
         5                         All (Good Merge)
