Are you still looking for another player?
I was thinking of toying around with a technomancer. I know we have one hacker already, but I wanted to make a gamer rather than a btl dealer. smile.gif

Can a Katana be used onehanded without penalty?

Just my 2 cents worth.

I do Kendo (i.e. japanese fencing), and a katana is intended and designed for 2-handed combat.

This means that the whle style and technique is based on having both hands available to be able to hold and guide the sword.
The left is used to actually move and control the sword, the right is used to literally just guide it. Katana's are used to 'slice', you cut forwards and then extend again. Blocks are done with the side or back of the katana, as the cutting edge is to be kept sharp and undamaged. The hold on the katana is supposed to be very lose, you could literally almost snatch it out of a kendoka's hand. The force and strength comes through the cutting technique.
As such, using it one handed would probably damage the katana and also deminish the damage potential to a major extent.

Thanks

Well, there is a style of Japanese martial arts that uses a katana one handed, with a wakizashi in the off hand. It was started by a samurai who thought it was wrong for a warrior to not use all weapons at his disposal.
TinkerGnome
The game isn't closed to characters yet. As time goes on, I don't expect it to ever really close, though you may be restricted on when or where you can start.

Anyone here not have a character on the Wiki, especially one that was posted in this thread that you intend to play? It's a bit long of a thread to go through looking for those. If, for whatever reason, you can't put the character on the Wiki yourself, I'll make sure it gets done.
bladepoet
uhuh,
nitto-ryu used by Miyamoto Musashi. According to some historians it was using a daisho or two katanas

Musashi however was a master swordsman, and a legendary one at that.

Hardly some street gang member wink.gif

You just cannot hit with as much force, and it is therefore much easier to defend against each strike. It is also much harder to defend when using two blades because you open yourself up more often to attack as well, and if the strike is a heavy one then it is possible for them to force themselves inside with the blow and have it land.

Consider that even being considered average in kendo takes many years (the minimum time you are required to train for the 8th dan (the highest dan now awarded save some honourary 9th dan's) is 32 years.

The sensei at our club is 6th dan, and I doubt he could effectively fight with 2 swords.

cheers

@ Jaid and TG,

Thanks guys, that explanation did help.

But...it seems to be more beneficial for getting skills up to the 4 rank range. With the limits that we have, is it really a good deal? I'm trying to think of ways that I could do it. If I dropped all 7 specializations, I'd have 14 bp to play with.

So...1 skill at 3 + a specialization, or...3 skills moved from 2 to 3 + a specialization.

If I did the latter, my choices of skills to bump to 3 are: Blades, Con, Pilot, Climb, Escape, Gym, Perception.

I think dropping all 7 is to much. I just don't want to lose the 4 combat dice and the 2 dice for defense. The others I could probably do without.

That leaves...taking off 4 specializations and gaining 8 bp. With that, I think I would raise Gymnastics to 3 and Perception to 3.

That sound better than what I had?
BlackHat
Not to be a wet blanket, or anything, but one of the things that really cheeses me off about DumpShock is the amount of poeple on it who know about real-life swordsmanship, or have army buddies, or whose dad is a doctor or whatever... biggrin.gif

In real life, I do computer programming. Its not glamourous, but I know enough to point out a zillion holes in the way the SR rules handle computer systems... but I don't bother bringing it up because Shadowrun is a GAME... its like watching an action movie... it doesn't matter that in real life you can't weild a katana one-handed, because its flipping sweet-looking so its cool to do in game. smile.gif Likewise, real life encryption takes way more than 30 seconds to crack... but it makes for a much more exciting game when hackers can get into your systems. In real life I can't cast spells, or shoot at a dragon, either. I also can't be a troll, or buy a rocket-launcher.

That said, I still think a ganger weilding a katana one-handed is a little matrix-y. wink.gif

I think dropping its stats down to a longsword is a fine rule. It ignores the fact that a katana is longer, heavier, and would be a little unwieldy that way, but hwo cares... the character gets no statistical advantage, and is, in fact, penalized because their weapon of chose is so expensive.
DireRadiant
Katanas are thread killers.

I think anyone who can cut someone with a Suzuki Katana Motorcycle one or two handed deserves some measure of respect.

Even Jet Li used the motorcycle as a blunt force rather then cutting. (The One)

I have to admit that Shadowrun doesn't really model my RL experience with spell casting rocket launching Dragon shooting trolls. (You'd have to meet my Ex...)

I remember reading a bit about him, and hearing various arguements. From what I heard it was a katana & a short sword/long dagger, though. I doubt it was two katanas, personally...master swordsman or not, you'd have to have really long arms to be able to do that and not gut yourself, and even then I'm not sure it'd work...

Oh, my sleeping patterns are now pretty much back to normal, and I'm off to finish Zero while waiting for the coal to turn up. Should have the equipment up by 6pm GMT.

hmm.... do we have any gunsmiths? if necessary I can give up some of my 5 bp for contacts to get some gunsmithing..... seems it "could" be necessary with so many gunbunnies we got

edit: after researching a bit.... where did pistols B/R go!? frown.gif

We have 1 armorer.

I also have put points into a weapons dealer... if anyone else wanted to contribute poitns to him to buff him up, that's fine by me.

In any case, I guess I'll make him a gang-contact.

TG- I am practically computer illiterate, would it be possible to email the character to you instead and let you get it up there?
MK Ultra
Added some fluff to TF, mainly peoples descriptions. Also put most of the fluff to new pages and liked them, like sparky did.

QUOTE (Silo)
That sound better than what I had?

Well, I don't think it was wrong in any sense to have what you had before. I was just pointing out that you would probably end up better off if you didn't have quite so many. I normally take one or two specs at chargen, even knowing that they are inefficient.

Hell, I tend to buy a F3 sustaining focus for my mage characters in chargen, even though that page claims it's a horrible buy.

Really, just consider something like that to be information to help you make decisions. You may still make the same decision in the end, but at least you were able to fully weigh your options.

QUOTE (BlackHat)

Check here for more info on katanas than you really want to know.

A good and relevant quote:

QUOTE (Wikipedia)
It is a commonly-encountered article of faith that katanas are intrinsically superior to European swords. This belief is frequently bolstered by roleplaying games that assign superior statistics to katanas, and also by many movies. However, these claims are largely based on misunderstandings about the manufacture and role of European swords, and comparing the schools on their worst examples instead of their best.

...both longswords and katanas typically weighed between 1.0 and 1.5 kilograms (2-3 pounds).

Talking about Musashi to prove a point on swords is a little odd, though. The man is a legend to the point where you can't believe half of what is written about him. I only know about him because I played Legend of the Five Rings for about two years.

Anyway, I'm going to simply take the view that the bonus AP comes from the way in which the weapon is wielded rather than anything inherent in the blade.

Silo
TG,

Can you comment back on the kleptomania thing? If we are good with the way I think we both described it, I will go ahead and revise that piece.
NeonWraith
I was planning to have an arms dealer/fixer type person as Zero's contact, so I'll put the points towards a shared one.
HeySparky
Forgot to note in here that (sans background), Jun Charles Santiago is ready for mechanical review, I may do some minor tinkering with gear.

I'm probably going to write my bg to intersect several people's.

Gang Territory suggestion:

Territory bounded by
Willow in the north (in Auburn)
70th (or 72nd if we get really ambitious) in the south
Alder in the east
And the stream in the west

TinkerGnome
I need at least two more things before we start. One, I need a good name for the gang leader. Two, I need to know what kind of buildings are present in the gang's territory. Assume that there are approximately 200 residents in the territory.
Silo
Name ideas: Hard Mike, Sid Slash, Slash, Double Shot, LG, GL, Burns, Jim.

Buildings: what are we talking about here? Do you want us to decide on specific businesses or are we just trying to determine residential, commercial, industrial mix?

TinkerGnome
For buildings, we're going to want to, eventually, have it down to every building. Right now, I'm thinking two large apartment buildings (one a fair bit nicer than the other), a Stuffer Shack on the corner, and maybe a couple of other small stores. A lot of the gang's contacts will live in the neighborhood, as well, and will need their own little places of business and homes.
Thanee
On TV every gang has a basketball court on their turf. biggrin.gif

Bye
Thanee
BlackHat
I dunno if, in terms of land value, there would be any basketball courts just eating up space... unless it was like, a hoop we put up in a parking space (or garage)... mabye there is a run-down YMCA building nearby though.
bladepoet
Maybe in a back alley a small disused loading bay for the basket ball court wink.gif

I was thinking more in lines of classic new york setup, stores and businesses on the groundlevel, appartments on top.

TG - Quick question, I was revising and editing my character concept (which I will have to you by tonight or tomorrow night latest, barring any unexpected circumstances) and I wanted to know, is it reasonable to create the following item:

Brass Knuckles/Hardliner Gloves

I figure they're a staple of gangs everywhere, and anyone can make them, so I don't think it would be unreasonable for them to exist.

I was thinking they would use the Unarmed Combat skill, be cheap, very concealable, and either do (STR/2)P or (STR/2 +1)S, or even (STR/2 +1)P. Any of those seemed reasonable to me. Thoughts?

Also, how often do you plan on having Edge refresh?
Silo
Brass knuckles would be awesome!

I gotta have some.

On damage...I bet there could be two different types: one that does +1 stun damage and another that does +1 physical damage. The physical damage ones could have spikes on them or something. Or the stun ones could be some other material other than brass....same for the physical ones I guess.

Question about the effects of deepweed. The book states +1 Willpower. Since it doesn't list it, does it make you lethargic or anything?

In other words, can someone smoke it all the time and basically get the +1 bonus without effecting their combat or related stuff?

I wouldn't be sure, but I'd like to think you can't get "Something for nothing" as nice as that would be. There should be *some* concequences to smoking up all the time. Not all positive at least. Like an addiction or something, you have the downsides that could eventually cancel out that +1WP.
DireRadiant

I think it affects that Nuyen stat.... X nuyen an hour 24 by 7 could get awful expensive.

P. 249 "Once its effects have worn off , deepweed users may suffer a
–1 to all dice pool modifiers for an equal duration."

Continual use, the keep taking the drug to avoid the letdown effect method of drug use, results in two things. P. 248

Overdose - box of damage every Body number of doses

Addiction Tests to see if your addiction level goes up, and eventually you Burnout, which results in lots of permanent negative things (Things you cannot buy back with karma even).

Now given all that, it would make a dramatic story line to have someone in the gang burnout on drugs, and how do we deal with it.
Silo
Not good stuff.

Thanks for doing the legwork on it Dire.

TG - What is the start date of the campaign? Loosely. So I can work backwards with my timeline.

And, a nudge to take a look at Santiago (nickname pending), in case my request got lost in the zoo that is this recruitment thread. smile.gif

Jaid
we actually have two armorers. sorta.

just as soon as i get a kit that is =P

on a side note, i still think it would be a good idea to have an actual arms dealer as a gang contact. since both of us also do things other than just build guns as well.

on a side note, if the gang would prefer, i'm fine with making my body chop shop contact into a group contact.

don't figure the junkyard would make sense as a group contact though...

and in any event, do all the gang contacts have to live inside the area? that seems just a touch improbable to me, that they are all in our turf.

of course, then, it would certainly make it a lot easier if we didn't have to cross other gang's turf in order to get to those contacts...
Rokur
If we are only "taking over" two blocks of space, I'd say perhaps have two apartment buildings new york style, where down below they have stores and such. On the streetfronts, you would have a stuffer shack, a laundry building/dry cleaner, maybe a diner or a deli, probably a few food delivery places (chinese or pizza), maybe a cheap pharmacy eek.gif , movie store, a gentleman's club, a couple bars, and maybe a body shop/auto garage. These are all samples of what could be there.... I'd prolly stick to about 10 stores max, so maybe one face of each block has the commercial strip, with a few little places here and there. I'd definitely like to see one local dive, a pharmacy, and a pizza place. Other than those, i really don't care. I was also thinking of having maybe one of the apartment places be nearly empty, and extremely run down (for the squatters).
DireRadiant
So far for general ganger contacts.

Silo - JJ - 1 BP
Vegas - Halo - 3 BP
nick012000 - Neo - 1 BP
MK Ultra - Tao Fighter - 2 BP
DireRadiant - China Doll - 3 BP
Rokur - Auran - 5 BP (2 to Fixer, 3 other)
BladePoet - 0Day - 1 BP

How are we resolving what we end up with?

I kind of like it. The thrill of crossing the 410. That block south of the 410 can be semi industrial/retail, and the open area near the trees and water could be fun to have.

Get enough speed westbound on 70th to jump the river!

Sorry, didn't realized the Unnamed Weapon-Dealer (2 Con, 1 Loyalty) was a group contact.
Silo
Places: There should be a liquor store or something related too. Unless Stuff Shack sells a bunch of hard booze too.

Gang Contacts: I think it would be fun to have to go somewhere outside of our turf for at least some of our gang contacts. I don't know about everyone else but I plan to be going places outside of our two blocks very frequently.

Silo
Okay, I just thought of some questions that I, as being unexperienced don't know the answer too.

How does someone in 2070 steal a car or a motorcycle?

Hell...how do people turn cars on? Surely they don't use keys still....

And...what skill supports "hotwiring" (or whatever it is)?
MK Ultra
QUOTE (Rokur)
cmon people.. generosity! hehe... contacts are very powerful, so stop spending so much money!

I already spend 20 bp on contacts all together, the two personal contacts just dont make sense as gang-contacts but both are quiet powerfull. Also, if the shared Talismongerer is ok, there are 4 more bp in the pool from me (unless i have to pay for those Tatoos).
We have to have a decent fixer and streetdoc and probably an aditionall lowlevel (cheaper) armsdealer and doc (probably some humanitarian guy, who can provide basic supplys like food, etc. if we are ever low down). Then I´d really like to have one (possibly more if points allow it) allied gang boss. finally, as a bonus (if we´ve got to many points to burn), a street level professional snitch will be fine, to keep the tabs on goings on in the ´plex without bothering other contacts with constant info requests.

Brass knuckles would be cool and they should be quiet powerfull even holding a screwdriver handel or something in your fist augments your punch quiet a bit (probably ((St/2)+1)S), the real mccoy should deal (St/2)P or (St/2)+1P for the elaborate variante.

On Names, it should probably have to do something with the gang and with his abilities. I´d like him to have a really clishéd name. Maby snake or snakehead or slicer or vail.
We should put up a poll on the Bass´ and the gangs name, now!

On Turf, I´ve got to take another look first...

The gang leader is going to start out an NPC. I intend for one of the PCs to take over the role in time, though.
Wounded Ronin
Man, guys, I'm sorry, but I think that I'm going to have to drop out. As I look through the pages of character generation I realize that I really don't know anything about SR4 chargen. And the thing is that without understanding the SR4 rules I just can't begin to even conceptualize a character. The rules and the setting define the character and without even a general idea of what can and cannot be created with the rules and how things behave, I can't even begin to focus my mind to imagine a character.

Sorry, guys. I hope that you understand. Thanks very much for the invitation, TG, but it looks like I just can't hack SR4.
