I'll have to read through the guidelines and make sure I know what's what, but I'm interested...I've had an idea for an ex Triad enforcer running through my head for a couple of days now, and this'll be a chance to use him.
banditf50
An ex-Triad, or any organized crime type character would easily find a home in one of the many LiTS plot threads that are ongoing . . . now, whether that is a good thing for the player remins to be seen smile.gif

Glad that you are interested!
JackRipper
I submitted a street level PC also. (currently in the reviewing stage) And am excited to play.
Slipshade
Wow, lots of new players. Glad to have you guys. Keep the faith, it can take a while before you get to post, but it will be worth it. Hell I have been around for a while now and I have yet to make it on a run, but I am still having a blast.

Having a blast, eh Slip? What an appropriate choice of words...

QUOTE (grendel @ Jun 9 2006, 03:12 PM)
Actually, the question you have to ask is:  will the character suffer more if I let him live?  Or will it suffice to have him die in a spectacularly painful manner?

Well put Grendel, well put. *applause*

Seriously, what kind of GMs would we be if we just killed your characters? Heck we could drop a Lofwyr Nuke at any time and just blow the whole world up. But where's the satisfaction in that?

Remember, murder is just an act, torture is an art. The former is brutal, but ultimately a one time show. The latter is an exquisite canvas on which to paint a lifetime of pain, suffering, humiliation, degradation, and misery.

Morgannah - If you're interested in keeping Cosmo alive, given Shadow's recent comments, may I suggest keeping Cosmo away from Ivan, whose life expectancy has probably dropped precipitously in the last few hours.

Vegas - I'll wait until I have your completed sheet then before I comment if you're almost done with your character.

Everyone - Slip is correct. It often takes a while to be able to post, but any LITS player will attest that is because the GM staff pays meticulous attention to ensuring we can run the absolute best game possible.

Therefore, we want to make sure that before any player enters the game we are confident that we can provide the highest level of quality gamemastering we can. So if you're moving through the process, trust us that we will take care of you, and if you're willing to see it through to the end, so are we. smile.gif

Odd question, but is there any reference to the old English coastal defence emplacements in Shadows Of Europe? (or any other sourcebook, for that matter)

For those of you that're wonder what I'm on about, let me explain. Back in WW2, when it looked incredibley likely that the Germans would be invading by sea, they built a huge number of tiny oilrig alikes out in the ocean...they were, from what I remember, basically two pillars with an armoured bunker in the middle that had some anti ship guns in it.

Course, they were never needed, so after the second world war the guns were removed, but the emplacements themselves are still there. Anyway, about 6-7 years ago, in the height of the .com boom, someone had the bright idea of using these old emplacements as ultra secure server colos....I don't know if they're still in use, but the idea got me to thinking.

If, in the SR4 setting, those emplacements are still about (and still have that submerged hardline connection to the mainland) they'd be an ideal base for all sorts of interesting occupations, though smuggling was the one that I was thinking of (if the Triad he was a part of specialised in smuggling, it'd let me use one of the defences as a base, and give him a reason to be in Seattle).

pfftt.. High-risk situatuion is one of the BEST places to stand in from an PbP RPing standpoint...where's the fun in knowing you'll live.... where's the point in fleshing out my enemies if the fear for my life being taken away with a well placed bullet not being there.....

Runners get hired for suicide runs EVERY DAY! in the sprawl.... it's the runners that survive that have the interesting stories...

Neon: here's a Wiki entry on that. Interesting reading. HavenCo (another Wiki entry) was the name of the colo you're talking about.

I don't remember specifically if SoE says anything about them, but maybe the London sourcebook or Target:Matrix maybe? I'm kinda short on the pre-3rd edition and Matrix books. I'll look up in SoE and get back to you.

As for them still being around in the 2060's, a lot of them probably are beyond repair, but after the Crash of '29 most of their record of even being there are gone as well. You'll still have some marked on charts as navagational hazards, but, as the Wiki entry shows, some are bound to still be around.

Yes, yes. There is a greater sense of accomplishment inherent in surviving near-impossible challenges; it makes for interesting writing (and reading, naturally), more drama, and an overall better gaming experience, however ..

*Glances toward the many and various GMs listening, voice dropping to a whisper*

.. this sort of talk only encourages them to make bigger blimps, if you know what I mean. They're quite capable of killing us without encouragement, I think, and in some cases they've had years to perfect their evil plans.

Besides, one of us has to seem cowed, otherwise they'll start questioning how e-f-f-e-c-t-i-v-e they've been
.

Ah, grendel's not so bad. He's like a teddy bear*. And, as long as these death-wish characters stay in SoCal, way away from Tony, I'm ok with that. Maybe he'll be distracted rotfl.gif

*I used to have nightmares about those Teddy Ruckspin things. The eyes are freaky, man! Didn't help that I saw Chucky either that night...
NeonWraith
I looked up a bit more on them earlier, and it turns out they constructed three of them. From what I read, one collapsed about 10 years ago, one is Sealand, and the other's still there.

There's also the old Army defences that used to be the location of Radio City in the 60s, which are probably the ones more likely to still be standing...not sure though.

Though this does lead me to wonder if anything like them would've been constructed in the Euro Wars..

Edit:

Would any of the GMs object if my characters background was he worked for a smuggling operation/Triad gang/whatever based out of something like the old sea forts?

There's got to be all sorts of abandoned facilities lying about off the coast of the UK, especially after the Euro Wars

I don't mind if this is your character's background, but barring special permission from the GM(s), all characters should expect to do the majority of their playing and living in Seattle.

Again, this is subject to the character, of course. A smuggler, for example, might have a wider range of operations, but like I said, just give us the details and we'll discuss. When in doubt, ask. smile.gif

Rokur - Ahh but you are assuming that everyone in LiTS is a runner. smile.gif

The fun thing about this game is that really isn't the case for all of the characters.
JackRipper
Smugglers Havens has some stuff on bunkers but its mostly former Russian area. Maybe the (and I'll spell it wrong cause i dont have book handy at the moment) Vladivostok area. It was part of China until the end of the second Opium war when Russia took it as part of its treaty agreement, it was then and is now a large port city. The russian mobs are the main force but its a major stop over for smuggling operations (U.S., Europe and Asian) might be worth checking into, its in the smugglers havens book. Hit me up for more info if you dont have access to book.
NeonWraith
Well, I've decided I'm going to try and figure out how to work the smugglers thing into it, though they might end up being based out of somewhere else.

And he's not a smuggler per se, he just works for them...which would give him a better reason to be in Seattle...since if they were looking to expand their operations, sending someone to make contacts and find out what's what beforehand might be useful...
JackRipper
You might try leaning away from the Triads and towards the Russian Vory as the Triads are established in Seattle with like 3 or 4 groups as the Vory arent really organized there yet. The Vory also are allowed to" freelance" as long as they follow the code, especially the part of kicking up money, where as Triad membership is for life....and they're serious about that.
WinterRat1
Vegas and JackRipper - I've been having some computer problems lately, and it's putting me behind schedule on all Dumpshock related work. I'm not technically proficient enough to fix it myself (translation: I suck at computers. Horrendously.) so I have to have someone look at it for me. I'll try to get it fixed as soon as possible so I can finish up reviewing your characters and get back to you both. I apologize for the delay.

MK Ultra
Hey, Just wanted to announce that I´m interested, too and allready working on a PC. I just need some time, to hack all the background that swirls around in my head into the computer.
banditf50
Welcome MK, glad to hear that you are interested. Do you mind giving us a short preview of your character concept while the ideas are freshly swirling in your head?
MK Ultra
Thanks, well basically, I´m going for male, european, retired government-agent (some sense and headware, only).
Due to heavy, repeated and longtime use of programmable ASIST and Persona-Fixer BTLs for undercover purposes (maybe combined with some injury or illness and of course lack of training), however his former skills are deminished to nonexistent and his physique is frail and out of shape.
His biographical memory had been undamaged mostly (though he lost all memories not related to his person, like language and most knowledge skills as well), but the non-declerative memory was whiped clean. He had to relearn how to eat, walk, talk and use the bathroom.
On top of that his retirement fundes got burned up for health care and rehabilitation, so he´s now looking for some way to make a living.
He however, emerged out of his breakdown with two fields of expertise he had previously been compleatly incompetent in (or that was locked in his unconcious). He developed a talent for art and a small amber of magical talent was lit (magicia), though deminished through his implants he´s not very capable of anything magical at this point.

EDIT: This isn´t a shadowrunner (though he might develope into one) the PC has no plan, what to do for a living, yet (but there is enough money left to survive comfortably for another month or two).
Grogs
Hey guys. I've read through quite a few pages of the LitS threads and a couple of stories and I wanted to let you know I'm interested. I've got a character in mind and I've got most of her backstory / 20 questions / etc written out. I'm just trying to struggle through the character creation, and especially the gear. I should have her ready to submit for review sometime in the next few days.
banditf50
Happy to welcome another potential player to LiTS . . .welcome Grogs!

Just like I asked MK, would you mind sharing some of your character ideas with us while we await your submission? smile.gif

Sure! My character was a product of a corporate breeding program -- they were trying to breed two mages to produce a more powerful mage. (Un)fortunately, their program went horribly wrong, and the resulting child was not only mundane, but severely handicapped (deaf & dumb) as well. Treated poorly by most people, she sought comfort working with machines. Her skills at working with machines led her to a job with DocWagon, at first as a simple mechanic, and eventually as a pilot. After a couple of years on the job as a DocWagon pilot, she fell in love with one of the medic/mages on her crew and they eventually married.

Finding that maybe people had some redeeming qualities after all, she was ready to settle down with this man and have a family until disaster struck. Her DocWagon vehicle was shot down by a Ground-to-Air Missile and 8 of the 10 crew were killed, including her husband. Distraught by the loss of the only man she had ever loved, she started slotting BTL's and lost her job, her home, and pretty much everything else she had ever earned. She would have ended up as just another chiphead found facedown in the gutter, but the other surviving member of her DocWagon team, now a street doc, found her and managed to clean her up.

She has managed to clean up enough to open a small repair shop in a seedier part of town (probably Redmond) and acquire a few vehicles and drones. Now, a middle-aged woman out on her own, it's a struggle to try and put her life back together. Burning in the back of her mind though, she'd like to know who was responsible for killing her husband and see them brought to justice -- at the point of a gun if need be.
Morgannah
Mm, nice juicy backgrounds all around, I think. smile.gif

It'll be great to see your stories take shape if you decide to join our 'little' community. Excellent ideas so far!

One of the twenty questions is about enemies.

What's considered a good amount of detail about an enemy? One sentence, a paragraph, thousand word backstory?

In SR3 enemies are a flaw for which you got points to buy goodies. Is there an equivalent for SR4? e.g. you could consider enemies as negative BP at the same rate as contacts.
WinterRat1
Couple things:

1. For all who are/have been submitting characters, just fyi, it takes me about 4-6 hours to review a character and write up my reply (ask anyone who's been/going through the process, my reviews are generally quite extensive), and I have a REALLY busy week up through the end of Sunday, so your patience is appreciated. But I will get to them as soon as I can in the order I receive them. After all, I am looking forward to having you all on board and want you to join us as fast as possible too! smile.gif

2. Originally we used the Enemy Mechanic per SR Companion in the SR 3 version of LITS, but we have since removed it since the mechanic is no longer directly applicable. However, if you seek a guideline, then that is the one I suggest. The amount of detail should be directly related to how significant the enemy is.

If it's just someone that doesn't like you very much, a few sentences explaining who they are and why they don't like you will suffice. If they are your nemesis then much more detail is wanted. I realize that's very vague, but basically, the more important they are to your character's story, the more you should write. If we don't think what you provide is sufficient for us to GM them well, trust me, we'll ask you for more details. wink.gif

As far as the Hunted/Extra Enemies flaw, if you really feel it's appropriate for the character's story we're willing to discuss it, but I will state this upfront: If you have the Hunted/Extra Enemies flaw, I absolutely guarantee they will come after you. Early and often, hard and fast. Enemies written into the backstory will be handled in a more relaxed manner, but any enemies you get BP for will definitely be a major part of your character's story.

3. I also remind everyone (not just DireRadiant) that flaws, both background and mechanical, come into play with much more regularity in LITS than a typical one-shot forum game. So far almost every PC with a flaw has had it exposed or otherwise had to deal with it in some way, shape, or form, so keep that in mind when you design your character. Small flaws (such as weak allergies, addictions, etc) are treated exactly as such, minor inconveniences that will bug you from time to time. Big flaws are big problems, and will be impact your character's life appropriately.

This is absolutely not intended to discourage anyone from anything for their characters, just fair warning and a repeat of the Guidelines that there are not really any 'cheap' flaws available in LITS.

Thanks for all the interest, please feel free to post any more questions as they arise and we will try to answer them as promptly as we can. I'm looking forward to having you all on board with us!

Flaws are fun. I always think of them as things I do in character anyway. Getting a BP for doing it is an unexpected bonus. Flaws are what you contrast your virtues with, assuming a 'Runner has virtues.

This is all in good fun WR, it just seemed very appropriate after Dragon conducted his first execution, at least the first one in the storyline.
WinterRat1
Hey Dragon has virtues! He's got lots of them in fact! He's stronger, faster, tougher, and flat out deadlier than most...oh wait, you were talking about character virtues, weren't you? Like, morals? Sorry, that term does not compute. Please rephrase your question.

I would like to add a character. Here is a quick overview. His name is Roc and he is a troll. His occupation would be the heavy; ie the bodyguard, collector of debts, bouncer etc. Roc is a physical adept specializing in melee. He would have no gun skills per se but he is fairly decent at throwing things shirken, rocks, grenades, and people etc. He would have decent perception and intimidation skill levels. The one flaw I would like to see him have is gremlins. Background he grew up in streets of the barrens plain and simple. He never joined a gang but instead would hire himself out to gangs needing extra muscle. I will flesh out the rest later.

Here is how Roc would describe himself. Let me know what additional questions you have.

Da namez Roc. Yez I'z a troll. Uz gots a problem wif dat? Whatz dat I do? I'z glad uz ask. Uz knows the big good lukin feller behind the scawny little bugger doing all the talkin? Dats me. Wow, i'm like foaming at the mouth to get started with this and I have my sheet/background etc pretty much good to go (I hope) but I had a question... is there an agreed upon cost for street drugs in the LitS universe?

Trying to blow the last little bit of cash on gear + stuff biggrin.gif

Thanks guys!
grendel
Most street drugs are going to be between 200 and 500 nuyen.gif per dose depending on where you're shopping, what you're buying, and how much you'd like to purchase.
JackRipper
Isnt that steep for prices? (as compared to prices in Cannon companion for BTL, or Man & machine for street drugs) I'm asking this from an uninformed position to the LitS campaign setting.
September
So...I can't figure this out exactly...you're running SR4 rules with SR3 equipment and setting, circa 2064?
DireRadiant
QUOTE (WinterRat1 @ Mar 12 2006, 08:24 PM)
As you may notice from the updated Guidelines thread, LITS is now an SR4 game. However, we’ve had to make some departures from strict SR4 canon in order to allow for our existing player base as well as for additional sourcebook expandability. The mechanics are outlined in detail in the Guidelines thread, but here’s a basic rundown:

It was determined among the GM staff that the primary storyline event needed to update the world of SR 3 to the world SR 4 was the Crash that led to the creation of the Wireless World. In our world, the Crash has not happened yet. While this may limit and change certain things from canon Shadowrun history and rules for a time, the GM staff feels that the continuity maintained with the current storyline is essential to the integrity of LITS. Furthermore, we are already moving towards the events that set the Crash in motion, and we believe the opportunity for you to experience, impact, and perhaps even alter the things that shake up the Shadowrun world like few events have before is worth the trade off.

If you are interested in playing with us, please submit a completed character (instructions found in the Guidelines thread) to WinterRat1, the LITS Universe Coordinator, at alexwong945@yahoo.com or PM me.

Essentially.
bclements
Yep, we are running SR4, and you'll be expected to build your characters with the SR4 ruleset in mind. Please note the following exceptions:

QUOTE (The Guidelines)

1. Hackers will be using commlinks to hack with a zero range. In other words, they must still jack in with a datajack. Note that commlinks are essentially serving the function of the SR 3 cyberdeck at this time and in this particular function, as you must still jack in. However, SR 4 rules for hacking will be used.
2. Riggers are still required to have vehicle control rigs (VCR) and will also be required to jack in.
3. Both hackers and riggers still need datajacks to jack in.
4. All items are at SR 4 essence and nuyen cost.
5. Nothing that requires wireless to function as written and intended is allowed.
6. LITS is currently in 2063 and will remain so. We will be working toward the Crash, but we are not ‘jumping’ the current time forward. All backgrounds and timelines should go no farther than 2063.

Commlinks are available to your characters, but the true wireless functionality available in SR4 isn't really in use as of yet. Wireless Smartlinks and RFID tags are the primary ones, but generally anything Wireless can be thought of as off-limits.
Cold-Dragon
Well, I'm working on my magically charged character yet again. It's amusing, because an hour ago he was affording, then in a single movement in Excel, he's 5 points over. >.< lol....

I'll figure out how to fix that eventually.
bclements
Heh. It can be a little tricky getting the mechanics to work sometimes (just ask our current players about that smile.gif ). The backstory is just as important, though. And we're more than willing to help you out with that.
