I know you all are working for the most money but, you are already recieving
2 1/2 times the normal pay of 200 a day for security/snoop jobs.(According to the shadowrun companion...i know 3rd edition but, it still is valuable) and the average runner only does 1 run a month with time off looking for more work, resting, healing or fixing gear, so the base pay for a run is usually the average lifestyle of the party times 1 to 1 1/2 months upkeep (also according to the shadowrun companion)

I'm not trying to keep you from negotiating but, bear in mind he has for the most part already exceeded your average pay by almost 4 times.

Then again, this is a classic first shadowrun mistake so by all means run with it...but remember youre hungry. And that's a fat carrot dangling in your face (a fatter carrot than you normally would have)

QUOTE (Cedric Rolfsson)
Ankle, I've subscribed to your network thingie. I have a rules question. Its assumed that all of our gear is slaved to our "node" or commlink, does that mean that when I subscribe to your forebrain does that mean that you now control all my gear?

I'm still trying to work out the ramifications of the wireless net. I'm worried a hacker is going to turn off my Predator IV when I need it most. If I subscribe to your node does that mean that before a hacker could get at our stuff he'd have to hack your defense first? Or is my POS commlink a weak link that an foreign hacker can attack to get access to our node? If I hook up my microtranseiver unit that comes with a throat mic and earpiece can that link up to the secure net or is that seperate from the commlinks and safe from Hackers?

Help. Sorry for cluttering the space with rules questions, I'm really not an idiot, honestly, I just am trying to get a feel for the limits and capabilities of the wireless world.

Technically, if I wanted to joining a commnet with me would make you more vulnerable to haing your gear "nicked", however, it would not automatically give control of your gear to me. Like being in an MSN conversation with me would not allow me to format your hard drive, but to a determined hacker it could act as a starting point for trying such a thing. That being said unless your commlink is fairly SOTA, I could hack it, and all your gear, anyway. cool.gif

Being subscribed to me as a node would not do much in terms of your network security vs other hackers, but with greater access to your comm I could dump a sprite in it that can tank up even a low power comm, or just play hob with your systems.

Ask me IC about tips for improving your security beyond this, though.

The good news? It is usually more trouble than it is worth hacking a comm when you can just shoot the person holding the comm instead.

My oppinion on the being masssively overpaid front, any Johnson willing or dumb enough to overpay by that much may be willing to part with a few more creds. nyahnyah.gif

As people accept the conference call they are asigned AR avatars that are essentially clip art/"guess who" level of detail 2d sketches of their faces, with their handle and specialty underneath. They have minimal detail so that only race, hair, and rough skin color can be identified, the eyes are all black and white, and only have racial differentiation.

Comedian's avatar has a white face, with short brown hair and short brown facial hair. Underneath is written "Comedian - communications analyst.". Underneath Chopper's sketch portrait is "Chopper - bends people."

For people who are using voice comms, The names and specialties of each subscriber are repeated once each in a guestimate of their speaking voice, if they spoke, and a gender appropriate distinctive accent if they did not. Comedian appears to be speaking British Newsreader English.
Shadow
So Jack, what is the sense I get, is he telling the truth, is there no more money to be given?
Ankle Biter
"Asp - Tactical" Added to comm conference.
Shadow
Never mind I re-read your post.
Cedric Rolfsson
Jack, if I've overstepped what I know please say so, I was assuming that because I moved up to the edge of the table and the Ork put hte paper on the table I was able to see the data on it. If I'm wrong please let me know and I'll edit that post.

JackRipper
Nope you're good Ced.

I have to say I am pleased with the roleplay here, seems for the most part I chose the right people (minus those that flaked)

ADDRESS:

516 WEST UNDERCOMMON ROAD

COMMCODE:2345RTC

You can discover fairly easy by using your commlink to access a cityguide that its an address in Interbay near the Burlington train yard
Cedric Rolfsson
How about a simple title search? I can access the King County Assessor's office and get the basic property info which includes the owner's name and the last owner's name right now. Can we get that as well?

If we're able to find out who the current owner is we can run a check on that person, likley a rental company or holding company, and then we'll know who to go to find out who's currently renting the property if anyone. Then we can see where that leads.

The more data the better as far as I'm concerned, on the Johnson and the opposition. I have no idea how long it would take a Hacker to blast off across the Matrix and get the data, or if its even possible, but I'll engage the Johnson in conversation for a couple of minutes to allow Comedian time to get what data he can.

I'm so incredibly getting a subvocal mic, this typing crap in the air has got to be pretty obvious.
JackRipper
i dont think you'll have time to do a track down in the matrix at the moment, if it was possible.
JackRipper
oh...your commlink works inside but....not so well piercing the rooms walls.

when i said a simple search to show location i didnt exactly mean you could do it right then and there.

Ankle Biter
This is rather important, when you say "not so well", is the room completely shileded, or does it have ECM (I.E. can I "punch through" it?) Technomancers get really antsy when in a dead comm zone...
JackRipper
its not a dead comm area, being the others have commlinks as well as few devices running in the room. You arent in an area that unnerves you its just wi-fi secure (has enough safeguards to keep the meet secure, and private)

If youre asking is it possible to hack out...it isnt easy, but it aint impossible either.
Ankle Biter
Had a better Idea, I'm looking the Johnson over in detail, and using my vast knoweldge of electronics, and my nifty nifty glasses of clearsight trying to figure out what sort of rig his comm is.

An idea of the sorts of things I'm looking for...
Trodenet,
AR gloves,
Tecnological fashion items like a holosuit,
Headphones/earbuds.
goggles, glasses, contacts, or cybereyes
any "non standard" electronic gear
wristbands with scroll wheels/buttons.
Telltales that he is pausing to give DNI or subvocal commands
What his comm box looks like, if it is visible on his person.

I will passively check for wireless interconnectivity beween these devices.

When I am done I will take a look for his commcode and see what can be gleaned passively from it's outgoing signal, or if it is running in hidden mode take a swing at finding it. I will do the same for his Ork bouncer, and any other non-PC's in the area.
JackRipper
roll a perception on the visual id of any items...and then roll to "sense" the wireless connectivity.
Cedric Rolfsson
Hey guys, please feel free to jump in here anytime, I don't mean to have taken over here. I feel like I've hijacked the negotiations when I'm not really qualified to, which is not my intentions.
Ankle Biter
Edit, Cedric, no matter how bad you are, comedian is worse, trust me nyahnyah.gif

Okie dokie... My perceptionish rolls

Shadow
Nah Cedric you did fine. I think at this point we have gotten what we are going to get. No matter how many hits we get on a negotiation roll. Since we did get a bonus per run out of him, and a deal on gear lets call it a day and move on.

I'm not after hacking them, but it would be nice to
[ Spoiler ]
. The idea was that I was looking for some way to impress upon the Johnson what a clever little hacker I was without doing anything that would get me jumped by his IC, should he take offence. If I need to make another roll for that, ok, but

I don't want to hack employers or fellow runners without good reason.
Cedric Rolfsson
Okay, whoa! That was a posting flurry there. Sorry for running over your post Ankle, I was replying at the same time you were.

I don't think we know what type of work we're looking at, it hasn't been mentioned anywhere IC. I also think we're basically looking at datasnatch or a little low grade espionage/sabotage type thing.

Oh, and that whole kill the cop thing was a deliberate nod to Asp and Sahara, figured you'd like that, it works in with my character being a little bravado and it could add yet another delicious layer of tension amongst the team! ork.gif

Mwwahahahahaha
Ankle Biter
That's what I thought, I just assumed I was being blind. Comedian is anal in some respects, and is not going to take a job without knowing what style of work it is. It is way easier to walk at the start of a run, and I can even IC suggest a replacement for myself if it comes to that, which I doubt it will.
Cedric Rolfsson
We can't really end the meeting yet guys. Our mage, and rigger haven't even got to say anything yet, I'm not sure about adamu's character. It appears he'll follow Sahara around like a love sick puppy (with really REALLY big teeth) but if he's got anything to add we should give this a tick and let them have their say in this too.

We've been posting and responding pretty quickly, (nods all around and two for our GM), so they might need awhile to catch up. BTW on most weekends I am unavailable, I give that time to my wife and kids so I won't be posting at this pace on the weekends. Just FYI.

Ankle Biter
That's a fair point. Where are you guys? We have a banter going here... cool.gif
JackRipper
Ced i left it open ended for that purpose (the meet)

and no one bothered to harp on the specifics so, i didnt include them. Its all about the money it seems.

I very much appreciate your consideration. Civility goes a long way on these boards, I reckon. But just speaking for myself, barring some situation where my own personal input is critical, you never really need to hold things up for me. I check the boards pretty frequently, and if I don't post, I may just not feel a burning need to add anything. More importantly, personally I think the best policy is to just keep things moving along. If someone just HAS to do something, they can post a retroactive action. But mostly, keeping the momentum up simply keeps us from having five or six people waiting on one person who happens not to be posting right at that moment.
So play on, I say, and have no concern for yours truly.
JackRipper
Ankle you'd be trying to detect a hidden mode commlink:Electronic warfare+scan test. then to message him you would be hacking his commlink as you arent on his subscriber list. You have already found the commlink.
Cedric Rolfsson
question, I can't find specifically a "bug scanner" so I bought a Radio scanner Rating 4, is that the same thing? I understand that it is a device that scans for the radio frequencies used to communicate between devices. If I've got the wrong device let me know and I'll revise the hand held scanner to reflect that.

I was intending to buy a scanner to scan for the RFID tags commonly used to track employees by the corps.
JackRipper
radio signal scanner; price on page 325, discription page 326 (if its what you bought then thats it)

Ahh, damitt. can I spoof a message so it looks like it's from the ork?
JackRipper
You'll be hacking the Orks to "spoof" a message to the Dwarf...you are actually hacking and not using a spoof program to generate a false trail with the intent to mislead or confuse a track program.
Ankle Biter
Fair enough, I won't bother then. I decided to state my intentions a different way...

I can roll up a combat decker depending on the Johnson's reply, so feel free for the J to tell me to walk if he isn't into what I'm selling.
Ankle Biter
Ok, assuming I get the front money wired to me, I leave and comm for my bike to turn up. That Ok? Puttign this in the OOC section so I don't futz up the IC thread
JackRipper
Money is wired/deposited
Ankle Biter
Sweet. Time to make me some cash. What are the availablilities on parts for building your own comms (mainly the response and signal kits, it is less effort to buy the sim modules and trode nets off the shelf)? They have availabilities for buying pre built ones, but not for building your own. I'm hoping that they will be easier to get hold of...
Cedric Rolfsson
Hey Ankle, if you're putting that stuff together get me an idea of price and my character is likely to be VERY interested. I've got some other expenses but my current commlink is kludge.
Ankle Biter
Then answer Ic, I made an offer to build em cool.gif. The price depends more than a little on the availability of parts. I can definitly build you something that would flatten a fairlight caliban, for less than it costs, or something that is effectively a fairlight caliban for about 5 g's, but it depends a LOT on parts availability.

Software, however, you are on your own. That stuff takes months to write, and the prices are rather on the steep side. I can probably copy accross your current ware though, and see what I can do about optimising your settings. That or you can hire a Sprite off of me to live in it and eat anything that tries to break in...
JackRipper
I'm going to say availability to pick up parts is the availability -2 of the compareable item (ie...like a home built fairlight caliban is the avail of a caliban -2)
Ankle Biter
Ok, what about custom builds? (ratings 5+)
JackRipper
I'm going with the above mentioned availability ( availability -2), a finished product is harder to come by than parts are (the laziness factor at work)

I'll even throw in pluses for higher end parts (cost more and harder to find but better)
JackRipper
I have a discriptive post to make about the area and the safehouse(it'll be a cut scene type like the intro to cafe' noir) so let me know you all are ready before i or you post. In other words do all your errands and such then let me know here in the OOC youre ready to hit the safehouse.

I know alot of people like to skip through a meet and just roll the bones, but as a general concensus did everyone like or dislike it? This first part and the feedback will help with the general direction and flavor (game mechanics also) of the continuing game. And if there is anything you the players would like to see then hit me up.
Shadow
I would have liked 2 posts for the begining instead of one.

The first post describing the cafe and the people. Then after we had posted we arrived another intro ducing us to the J. Not that the way you did it was wrong.
Ankle Biter
Hey, I love that planning and background stuff, so no worries on that front from me. This is the biggest advantage Paper and Pencil style RP has over computer games. You get to chose all your own missions.
JackRipper
I thought about doing two posts intially but decided we might have gotten alot of posts in the between times that might have slowed things way down. And I wanted to give it a cut scene feel.
