Good deal, that was going to torque me off. I'm getting my daughter's 4th birthday party all ready for Sat. so I'll make my opening post on Monday if that's okay.
JackRipper
Thats fine, we opened a little earlier than i origionally intended

Adamu with the spam guard up you're in Passive mode
Ankle Biter
I disagree, Passive mode means no untrusted signals incoming at all, active means that incoming signals are allowed, spamguard means that spam incoming signals have to get past your spam filter first.
JackRipper
You should take a moment and read passive mode on page 211
As well as all the modes.

Active/Passive/Hidden
adamu
No worries - passive mode it is. But with that, I am still broadcasting my ID to authorized law enforcement enquiries, right?
I essentially want to be as private as LEGALLY possible. Seems like even in high security areas there should be a way to meet legal requirements but not subject oneself to a sea of advertising....Plus even in the real world there are all different settings and adjustments a person can make to their spam filter.

But listen to me argue with the GM. Passive mode it is.

Active/Passive/Hidden

It seems I have to show more evidence, then.

Passive mode prevents acess to your PAN without your approval. I take "your", in this case, to mean the commlink user's personal over ride. This would block stuff like showing your personal profile, or adjusting what your AR goggles see without your express permission.

Note the last line "Passive mode allows you to automatically filter out the noise, only alerting you if certain pre-authorized nodes request access."

This means that when walking down the street you do not have to be worried about your comm asking you if you would like to get this or that pop up message that for some reason wants to show something on your AR goggles every three seconds. That in turn means that a comm can automatically tell the difference between spam, and stuff that you may want to see.

Alerting means that an incoming data packet that gets to the request stage must still manually be allowed to arrive.

In active mode your comm is accessible, so people can do stuff like read and respond to your profile, and IM you invitiations to partys, and your local Wall mart can update you on the best prices for krillsteaks these days, without you having to individually accept every part of this large amount of information.

This makes room for spam, as any incoming data includes advertising junk and so forth. However, if going active cannot have a spam filter, then one would not be able to function with AR, because of all the increase the size of your schlong ads and so forth cluttering out useful information.

Even an active PAN can be set to ignore messages from people, per the example #1 in "interacting with the Augmented World" ergo it can be set to ignore spam, as I have already established that a comm can recognize spam and knows not to ask you about it.

Perhaps a small amount of spam will still be able to get through, by spoofing itself as messages from real people and so forth, but for the most part there is no reason at all why an active PAN cannot have an efficient level of spam protection.

Page 209, about halfway down. "You can customize this interface to "view" this data any way you like, or to filter out certain contact (like visual advert spam)." Now if switching PAN modes is the only way to filter spam, then that hardly counts as "customization".

Page 35, Read the intro bit. Note that when "Eddie" adjusted the comm settings, it must still be active, it is automatically reading "the maps, the ads, the signs." A passive PAN would ask first. Note that in Eddie's "Prank" Mike thought he was going to go crazy trying to filter out all the junk. As there are certain highly populated areas, where an Active PAN is a legal requirement, how come all the people who live there aren't going crazy from all the spam. Especially in a "Must be Active PAN" zone, the motivation to create huge amounts of SPAM is overwhelming.

finally, an appeal to logic.

If having an active PAN turns off your spam filter,
a) why would anybody be able to use it at all as it would immediately fill with spam?
b) why is there not a market for being able to receive im messages from strangers without being bombarded with spam?
c) why is it the default setting for comms?

Hey just my two cents here, but can we not argue over Jacks interpertation of the rules? Lets just play the game, if Jack says thats the way it is, thats the way it is. We will have a lot more fun playing the game than discussing the rules.

If a rules discussion is what your after, post your questions in the Shadowrun 4 forum and discuss away! Here though, lets just play and go by what the GM says.

Why do people always interpret rules disputes as arguments? frown.gif
I don't want to slow the game down, and if the GM wants to make Active PANs unable to block spam it suits me fine, as there are all sorts of fun games a technomaner can play with that, but Jack asked me to read the rules, I read them and posted what I found.

If you don't want me to talk about rules in this thread any more that's fine, just say so.
JackRipper
If you read what it says exactly on Passive mode, it allows for only certain things to come through...ie SPAMGUARD. It is pretty specific on it on page 211 where it discusses it briefly.

Passive: A PAN in this mode can access nodes but cannot be accessed by them without your approval. PAN's in passive mode still show up as active networks if searched for. This mode is useful for operating in high traffic areas, where advertising nets or spammers abound. Passive mode allows you to automattically filter out the noise, only alerting you if specific pre-authorized nodes request access.

That is directly from the book (making it canon) and when i said read that, it is exactl;y what i meant to take it as the canon ruling. This was to keep it simple and save space on header, and if you read all of them it is often required for you to keep an active mode running in upper society or secure areas. The page 211 rules are the Barney version for settings and not the Uber- technical thesis. In real world terms......what i as well as 90 percent of the world knows about computers is like page 211, what a hacker would knw...the Uber-geek thesis
adamu
Sounds to me like everyone agrees with everyone - everything Ankle Biter says makes sense, but Jack has ruled that we are going to handle it a certain way. How much nitty gritty complexity to try and handle is a call every GM has to make, and I am more than happy to go with it. I am just sorry to have gotten this thing started, though I do appreciate Ankle Biter chiming in.

But definitely Active, Passive, or Hidden for me from now on.

Very much looking forward to this run - been wondering all day what sort of challenge the J will want us for THIRTY DAYS for....

Because it is, you are arguing one thing, Jack another. That is the definition of an argument. Think of it this way, if we were playing table top would you pull out the rule book and start quoting chapter and verse?

If the answer is no, then you shouldn't do it here (imho) like I said before, better to play the game then argue over how the game is played.
JackRipper
I think i finally worked it out with ankle via PM. As a pre-law student i generally dont mind arguments, and especially when its about a game i truly like.(but lets not get carried away)

My take on it is this (per my own readings)

A high security or high class area will not have the same amount (if any) of the various local advertisments (spam) in the local net. From what i've read these arent like the global spam we often get now, but rather are central to a locality you are in, much like a billboard that says "Best burgers in town, next left on exit 14A." And since in high security/class areas the net isnt cluttered with spam and security is a priority, they can and will insist on an Active mode.

The guidance given on 211 is broken down Barney style for simplicity of play, and that's the route or rule i intend to use.

I cant and wont fault a player for wanting to explore (exploit) a part of the game that is intristically a part of the PC's concept, that being said I do reserve the right of GM fiat (and i dont mean the pussy little car popular in the '80's)

For the most part...i'm glad everyone is so interested and no blood, no foul.

I've posted for Chopper, whose real name is Harley, but the timestamp should put him there before Sahara begins speaking.

He has his commlink attached to the A. Moniker SIN for you tech genius who are about to strip all the data from his pathetically underpowered commlink. Just remember the first one of you to send me the various enlargement spam, complete with IR images, will find their commlink shoved someplace very difficult for anyone but your proctologist to make use of. smile.gif

Jack, question, do we roll per cannon for starting cash based on lifestyle?
Do you want me to send you a list of items reguarly carried and where on my person the items are? Its what I normally use for a tabletop game and I'm not sure how you want me to handle it via post.
JackRipper
Money is as per SR4.

Your typical load out we can post here (spoiler if you want)

dinnae fesh yersel, Comedian will be quite happy to set you up with a commlink that isn't pathetic, after all, your comm security is his comm security. Anyway, if he felt like screwing with your comm, you wouldn't be getting the schlong spam, but every lonestar grunt who scanned you would, followed by an agressive dataworm originating from your commcode. biggrin.gif

Oh, Ankle Biter, that's great man, Chopper's commlink was set up by his 15 year old kid sister who is taking computer classes (she's supposed to be advanced for her age) with all that entails. I have no idea what Chopper Matrix persona looks like and he's not real eager to find out. smile.gif
Shadow
I didn't have Sahara negotiate because I didn't want the Johnson to laugh at her. That’s a lot of money for street thugs. Especially with a lot of it up front. Now if she were a more experienced runner she would know something was up...

I am going to have her take a moment and give the place a good looksy.

Ankle Biter
Ah, the Johnson always lowballs the pay, it's a universal law. I just don't have the social skills to back that up frown.gif

Do we have a face yet?

Anyway, I guess ti's time for me to start collecting commcodes.

Mr JackRipper, I am covertly otaining commcodes for the various assembled runners, and sending them invites to a private network of my creation.

what, if anything, do I need to roll?

Edit

Also, do I get a say in what my living persona looks like, or does it have to be an idealised self image like for Ottaku unless they bought an icon program. (there is no icon program any more).

Cedric:
please make a Willpower + intimidation check

Ankle biter:
To pick up comm-signals it is a Electronics warfare + Sniffer test
then its a Hacking + Logic, threshold is Firewall of system(s) to hack into them

Willpower + Intimidation roll:

02, 03, 04, 04, 05

Not attempting to hack them, I just want to get their codes so I can send them a request to join a private network...

I would have made the numbers behind his eyes scroll, but I am tired and it is late.

I assume Sniffer + EW is a single test "against" all the other comms in the room, as otherwise it would take for ever to roll for everything it would be possible for me to pick up.

Technomancers get 2 extra dice for matrix perception, I am not sure if this counts, but it seems to fit the bill, as I am looking for a signal in the area so I will roll those with the test and the last 2 results rolled can be ignored if appropriate.

Sniffer (5)+ Electronics Warfare (4) + 2 Technomancer perception bonus? (11d6=31)
[1,4,4,2,1,5,2,6,2,2,2] Two hits. Looks like matrix perception did not help in this case anyway.

JackRipper
Not everyone is present yet...i've PM'ed others who havent posted. Will give them until Wednesday to post then, what we have is what we'll play.

you may do the minor things (like you have been doing) but the meet is on an in-game pause till the status is cleared up (or wednesday hits)
HeySparky
I've had word that Blitz will be out of pocket for another week. So, if it is possible to get Janie in at a later date, we might need to do that. Maybe as it becomes clear we need an Infliltrator type?

My PC has the loosest of possible links to her through a contact, but it could work.
JackRipper
Good thinking...i however was more concerned with the few that were accepted but havent posted yet.
Cedric Rolfsson
I'm worried about doing a run without a mage, like real worried, like paniced worried. Can we make sure we have a magician of some denomination along with the crew?
JackRipper
Cedric, unfortunately you are two "hits" short on your test.

You should add a post on how you deal with this.
JackRipper
And Cedric...Whizbang is your magical muscle so, no worries. Blitz is the thief i mean infiltrator.
Cedric Rolfsson
Massive sigh of highly intimidated relief.

Okay, I'll post away.
Ankle Biter
I'm waiting until we are sure everybody who is going to be there is there before setting up the commnet. (Unless I am allowed to assume that anybody who has not posted yet is late to the meet...)
JackRipper
Well, as I see it all that are going to post and play have posted already. Blitz is a seperate case and i have something planned to explain her absence.

In other words....GAME ON!!
Cedric Rolfsson
Okay then, for my personal information can I get a roll call? Who is playing and what are their areas of expertise?

I'm also trying to work out what information we process in the OOC area and what we do IC. What I'd like to do is discuss plans and proposed courses of action OOC and then streamline our IC posts to reflect our OOC discussions but in a tabletop game this converstation is carried out in character. How much can we pre-plan actions OOC?

What I'm interested in doing is pooling team resources to lease the use of at least one safe house as a base of operations for the next thirty days. It would cost the team 2K for a low lifestyle safe house and 5K for a middle level. Personally I'd prefer a mid-level one just for purposes of space but I'm not dead set on anything. (I'll admit to an ulterior motive, I'm eager to see how things develop if we put Sahara and Asp in close quarters for awhile. vegm.gif )

Anyway, that's my thought.
JackRipper
Hey Ced remember when i said i've GM'ed this about 6 times? I already factored in a safehouse...but great thinking on your part.
JackRipper
I want everyone to remember your Mr. J here is based off the pawnshop guy from the crow.

Shadow:
[ Spoiler ]
JackRipper
I dont mind roleplaying out a meet, its one of those often overlooked things where i personally think is as important as the run, and the reason they made the face archtype. I will let you guys in on a little secret...a well thought out pitch (argument) is about as good as a roll in my book.

Cedric on your question on "table talk" or planning, at the moment you are not a team just a bunch of runners who've met. Once you arrive at a price and accept then it's feasible to me you'd start co-ordinating. Think of it like in the movie Ronin, they all meet up then spend sometime establishing their working relationship
Ankle Biter
Ok, then, I am sending comms to each runner present's commlinks, inviting them to essentially a large conference call using my living persona as the Hub. To secure this I will then set up an automatic frequency hopping pattern that will the make the comms hub signals difficult to intercept. The message sent is in the IC section, please to RP your responses, including if you subscribe to the hub. cyber.gif
Ankle Biter
All information posted on the comms hub is freely shared between all subscribers and translated practically realtime to the format of the recipient's chosing if they went for one of the point and click options (Text/voice). Wonders of a lvl 5 Edit complex form.

I find it helpful if people <> bracket and color=yellow comms traffic to make it more easily distinguishable from vocal communication. If the GM likes I suggest you use that.
Shadow
Sorry for the delay on posting. Its been a rough week. Here's my Negotiate roll,
[ Spoiler ]
Cedric Rolfsson
Ankle, I've subscribed to your network thingie. I have a rules question. Its assumed that all of our gear is slaved to our "node" or commlink, does that mean that when I subscribe to your forebrain does that mean that you now control all my gear?

I'm still trying to work out the ramifications of the wireless net. I'm worried a hacker is going to turn off my Predator IV when I need it most. If I subscribe to your node does that mean that before a hacker could get at our stuff he'd have to hack your defense first? Or is my POS commlink a weak link that an foreign hacker can attack to get access to our node? If I hook up my microtranseiver unit that comes with a throat mic and earpiece can that link up to the secure net or is that seperate from the commlinks and safe from Hackers?

Help. Sorry for cluttering the space with rules questions, I'm really not an idiot, honestly, I just am trying to get a feel for the limits and capabilities of the wireless world.
