leave a white rose by the what?
SincereAgape
White Rose = The Korean War Memorial?

Caught up on the thread this morning over a cup of tea and a curry chicken wrap.

The Prof:

Slowly he moves through the assembly and ends up 'randomly' beside the 'elephant in the room'.

"You might like this cheese, it's very good." He holds up the hors-d' oeuvre for inspection. Before the man can answer, he continues. "But I wonder, would you like to take him up on his offer? Would you go to see a ... flying saucer?"

Elephant: "That is the worst pick-up line I have ever heard. Excuse me."

Needless to say, that was a laugh out loud moment.
pbangarth
Now you know why he took up archaeology and not public relations.

PS. "White rose" ==> Living Death?
pbangarth
So, Chrysalis... how does SR4A play into any of this stuff?
Mickle5125
oh dear lord no.

nothing against 4A, but I don't want to go through the trouble of learning a new set of rules...
pbangarth
There really isn't as much change as the naysayers would like you to think. Some of the changes would make an adept's player happy, though.
Mickle5125
maa... I've read the topic on the shadowrun board.

some of the adept changes were good. Others? less than pleasing. If chrysalis decides to go that path and is willing to arrange for access to the 4a rules for us, I won't be a brat and argue, but if it goes to vote... well, my opinion is known.
Chrysalis
Hi,

Despite being one of the proofreaders of SR4A, I am going to pass on having to go back and change things. If for some reason this campaign continues for years THEN I would be inclined to do an upgrade switch, but not this soon. Please do not argue with me about changes in this thread, there are several already heating up in the Shadowrun section of the forum. smile.gif

Most of the changes though are rule changes in other core rulebooks folded back into the basic book as well as errata and catalyst's decision with rules changes.

The Korean's War Veteran's Memorial

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_War_Veterans_Memorial

The Korean War Veterans Memorial was authorized by the U.S. Congress (Public Law 99-572) on October 28, 1986,[1] with design and construction managed by the Korean War Veterans Memorial Advisory Board and the American Battle Monuments Commission. President George H. W. Bush conducted the groundbreaking for the Memorial on June 14, 1992, Flag Day. It was dedicated on July 27, 1995, the 42nd anniversary of the armistice that ended the war, by President Bill Clinton and Kim Young Sam, President of the Republic of Korea, to the men and women who served during the conflict. Management of the memorial was turned over to the National Park Service, under its National Mall and Memorial Parks group. As with all National Park Service historic areas, the memorial was administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places on the day of its dedication.

The memorial is in the form of a triangle intersecting a circle. Within the triangle are 19 stainless steel statues designed by Frank Gaylord,[2] each larger than life-size, between 7 feet 3 inches and 7 feet 6 inches. The figures represent a squad on patrol, drawn from each branch of the armed forces; fifteen of the figures are from the U.S. Army, two are from the Marine Corps, one is a Navy Corpsman, and one is an Air Force Forward Air Observer. They are dressed in full combat gear, dispersed among strips of granite and juniper bushes which represent the rugged terrain of Korea. To the north of the statues is a path, forming one side of the triangle. Behind, to the south, is a 164 foot-long black granite wall, created by Louis Nelson Associates, with photographic images sandblasted into it depicting soldiers, equipment and people involved in the war. This forms the second side of the triangle. The third side of the triangle, facing towards the Lincoln Memorial, is open.

To the north of the statues and path is the United Nations Wall, a low wall listing the 22 members of the United Nations that contributed troops or medical support to the Korean war effort.

The circle contains the Pool of Remembrance, a shallow 30-foot-diameter pool lined with black granite and surrounded by a grove of trees with benches. Inscriptions list the numbers killed, wounded, missing in action, and held as prisoners of war, and a nearby plaque in inscribed: "Our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met." Additionally, right next to the numbers of American soldiers are those of the United Nations troops in the same categories. In the south side of the memorial, there are three bushes of the Rose of Sharon hibiscus plant, South Korea's national flower.

A further granite wall bears the simple message, inlaid in silver: "Freedom Is Not Free".
pbangarth
Google Earth has lots of good photographs along with imagery of the whole area.
Mickle5125
dunno if the info thing was for me... but I was just curious as to what the missing word in the IC was supposed to be...
Chrysalis
Hi,

Sorry for not responding in a bit. I can think of a few reasons, mostly AIESEC stuff (we elected a new EB yesterday, woot!) and St. Patrick's day on Tuesday, and a phone interview for the job in Bahrain (giddy and excited).

-Lauri

Mickle5125
good luck on the job!
pbangarth
Ditto!
pbangarth
Where is everybody? It's been half a day since anyone has posted in either thread!
bmcoomes
sorry, been busy. I'm working on my IC post now.
Mickle5125
Tally ho and away we go!
crizh
E-gads. It got late, sorry, I'll post in the morning, which is about 4 hours away suddenly...

Sounds like a great weekend. Best of luck with the job.

I don't know anything about the sixth PC we will meet down the road, but of the PCs present, none appear able to cast spells. Professor has the adept power Living Focus, which he (I) thought would be pretty cool ... as long as a magician was on the team. Silly me, huh?

So, Professor is going to have to check through his contacts for the possibility of sometime purchasing a spell cast on him so he can sustain it. I recall, dimly, that there was a table somewhere giving costs, availability, etc. of NPC spell casting, but I can't find it. Can anyone help?
pbangarth
Wanna see something freaky? Check out Google Earth, or Flash Earth (use OpenAerialMap), and go to:

66° 15' N, 108° 12' W

What are they hiding there?
Chrysalis
I am going to move the scene to that of the café on Sunday.

EDIT: Had a look at the image. Microsoft's earth imager software is far worse as it has used duplicate tile over the one missing in google earth. My guess is that it was taken by a satellite from the 70s as there seems to be imaging problems with the tiling. I guess we will have to wait a while for Radarsat-2 images to be appended to google earth and through that a whole host of other services.

Unfortunately there is actually nothing there.

Hah! That's what they WANT you to think!
Chrysalis
Of course this could be one of the locations used by the Aurora Project...
crizh
Now I'm really missing the software piracy rules from Unwired...

frown.gif
Mickle5125
eh? what do you mean?
crizh
Seems like about half of us have Skillwires but we could use several extra Activesofts but getting them would take about a week and cost a fortune.

I could supply an Automatics Activesoft to the group but I lack the skill to remove the copy protection.
pbangarth
you could default. grinbig.gif
Mickle5125
no possible way that could turn out poorly...

Blackie can muster up Logic 3 + Software 3 + Encephalon 1 + Analytical Mind 2 for nine dice to crack the copy protection. It's not brilliant, so if we want to spend a little money on it, I've got two dedicated hackers with respective connections of 6 and 3. The connection 3 contact is an ex-corporate computational theorist and prodigal genius, so maybe we could get her to crack the protection.
pbangarth
If you are looking at teamwork, Professor can throw 6 dice (LOG 5 + 2 Analytical Mind -1 default) to get a couple of extra dice for you. This would take some time, though, wouldn't it?
crizh
Nearly a week I would imagine.

Quicker to just buy them.

Hence my love for the Unwired rules. It would only take a couple of days to find a Pirate Network and from there you would be set.
Chrysalis
Hi guys,

IC slowed down a bit. Need a shove?

Got the job in Bahrain. Two years there.

About software cracking, may I recommend this can all be arranged off-screen through contacts. It will cost money, but it can be done. Otherwise you will have to spend important game time dealing with the cracking part.

There are also cracked software havens. Some active skillsofts are easy to find, but the more specific - or weird does demand more searching.

A cracked Berlitz language soft can be found with almost any blagger, orbital jumper piloting skill ASSIST software (a task-oriented visual interface assistant) are extremely rare.
Mickle5125
Couple things.

First, does anyone have anything else to add at the cafe, or shall we jump ahead to acquiring the Job Info from the memorial?

Second, just an fyi: Starting a week from today, my new job starts me on a 4am-4pm shift with classes afterwards tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. It shouldn't hurt my posting rate too much, but it'll still figure in.
bmcoomes
no I don't have anything to add so I'm good with moving forward.

Brent
crizh
I'm ready.

I'll contact my fixer and see what he can supply in the way of Cracked Activesofts.

Is there any possibility that the Activesofts that I already have are Cracked?
pbangarth
I'm happy to move on to the Memorial.

I'm still hoping Professor's fixer Zoltan can find someone willing to cast a spell for money. If info on the other deaths is not in the Memorial, Professor will still lobby for someone with the appropriate skills to try to find police reports or other data on those deaths. There could be an informative pattern (ie. MO).
pbangarth
And congratulations on the job in Bahrain, Chrysalis. Woohoooo! Income for two years!
Chrysalis
Right. I will be moving through two scenes. I will describe the memorial the location and options if you choose to use perception, astral or matrix. I will then place you into the next scene which is the actual surveillance scene. You will then also get introduced to SincereAgape's character who has been doing overwatch. I am busy writing some data and information about the previous events, so it will take me until this evening to place up a post.

Damn straight! I am blessing God that I have two doctorate theses for proofreading in April. That is something like 2000 euros, which is going to pay bills and rent.

-Lauri
pbangarth
I'm sure the Memorial will be very interesting/emotional astrally. Definitely, Professor will want to check it out. And hey, if Mr. Johnson is using this place as a drop site for info and payment, who knows what else is being transacted here? "Oh... that statue seems to have an interesting aura about it. And it is just a bit twisted on the base. I think I'll check it out, too."

I've been working on getting a proof-reading/editing job on a local history book being put out by the Historical Society. The old guy in charge (and I mean IN CHARGE) likes to have a hand in everything, and is mulling over the idea. They need somebody, but one mustn't leap into anything without careful thought, must one?
Chrysalis
Alright. That is acceptable. Gives SincereAgape and I more time. smile.gif

As for the proofreading job. I am reminded of the motto of the SAS: Who Dares Wins. And another I have up my wall, which are from Colin Powell's rules: Positivity is a force multiplier. if you want proofing jobs, I'll keep my eyes open. I know that Shadowrun is always looking for freelancers.

I started with no experience with proofreading. Now I am holding a 45 minute presentation in April on proofing doctoral dissertations to doctoral students. You rarely regret the choices you make, it is often the choices you do not make that you regret.

Now off to make dinner. Hmm... Alexander Pope or John Milton for reading... I think I will pick John Milton. After all "Better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven."
crizh
Wow that's a hell of a drop site.

I've spent at least half an hour cruising the area with Google maps and the best vantage point I can come up with is the top of the Arlington VA....

Anything else with any elevation is even worse. Fancy trying to sneak a sniper rifle onto the roof of the State Department?!

I think I'm going to elect to observe the meet from the cafe across the road. It has outside tables and decent sightlines down the southern fork of the path leading to the memorial and it's well within the max range of an SMG.

Good luck with the Astral thing. As far as I can tell the memorial is less than a mile from the Watergate Rift....
Chrysalis
Crizh, if you wish your active softs to be cracked. They are now cracked.

Now to get ready for my resume workshop.

I wonder whether we actually will -meet- anyone there, as I understood that there would be info/money stashed, but that's all. Can't hurt to be careful, of course.

Welcome to the asylum.

just to let everyone know I'll post to the IC thread later tonight at work (I love my job) which will be after midnight pst.

Thanks,

Thanks Pedro.

Brought medications and DSM Axis I and II Psychoanalysis for all.

Narrating:

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

Oh dear, it's going to be that sort of run....
