Just to be sure, there is no extra layer here. That "non-Matrix" stuff is the shutdown (or linked to it).

There is a scanner on the commlink (that is not connected to the Matrix), like todays NFC (Near-Field Communication), that smartphones use to transmit data to nearby devices (like when you pay with your smartphone), but with a bit more range (a few meters), which requires a certain "key" (likely some sort of chip Belenkiy carries) in the vinicinity to be accessed, and that also lets the device shut down automatically, if it gets seperated from the "key" involuntarily (which, obviously, happened here).

That part is fully disabled now, so you can just turn the commlink on as usual, but to access it you still need to hack it (and better without causing any alarm, because you really do not want Ares to be notified of a security breach here).

Also, Belenkiy is not some nobody. He is currently in charge of the R&D department for Personal Arms and Armor in Denver. So, his commlink likely can be used to gain access to some pretty important systems in the Ares labs in Denver, if it is breached. So, yeah, some heavy security on there should be expected.

Right, we have the Denver map but I was curious more about this specific plot of land. Are we near any trails? Are there no trails or roads, which would imply that they were off-roading (or flying)?

The basic idea is to trying to find vehicle tracks, then follow the vehicle tracks until they cross some sort of camera or sensor, then hacking that camera to get a look at the vehicle, with the goal of finding a thread to pull on.

I rolled hack on the fly and then wanted to do edit file to see recent call log or texts.

Is your Limit (which should be Sleaze 3?) raised somehow for this?


Also, as I see it, this would only give you 1 Mark, which is "guest access", basically (certainly not enough to access any files on the commlink).

EDIT: Ah... scratch that last part. 1 Mark is all you need to do the Edit File action.

P.S. SR5 is so weird at times. The commlink has a Device Rating of 6 (and there is a DR 7 one even). And then you have that table on p. 234 SR5, which lists Device Ratings from 1-6 and 6 is essentially "bleeding edge; billion-nuyen experimental devices; spacecraft" ... or a 5k¥ commlink, I guess.

You're not wrong! It is indeed silly. I find it curious that for a system (SR5) which allowed skills to go up to 12 (vs. 6 in SR4) that they didn't do the same for other grades like Device Rating.

AM has an Erika - she can do 4 sleaze from the Erika + 1 from overclocker + 1 from software - she also has a program module and a vector signal processor, so she can run signal scrub + smoke and mirror. There is no noise since the direct connection, and the sleaze easily goes from 6 to 10 (4 noise compensation where S&M increases noise for the sleaze) - long story short she keeps all the hits.

Having explicitly said that I'd like to edge if still possible, I didn't realize that she gets such a high limit.

It's been a week. How's this coming along?

This game has been my gold standard for consistency for almost six years and I'm hoping to keep it that way. Is there anything we need to do to progress?

I don't mind it too much, especially if we are doing different tasks and are not in the same situation. On the same one, I'd suggest waiting a day or two but less than a week.

Given that posts are the lifeblood of PbP, my general advice is "post early, post often".

There's a balance to be found with letting the game breathe and giving folks an opportunity to react, but this is an attentive group and a couple days is usually enough.

On that note, I do appreciate everyone's consistency over the years. Having been in many, many other PbP games, I know that is not the default experience.

Certainly don't always wait for me to post! Let those who are active carry the action

You, obviously, do not have lots of connections in Denver, but you can also use connections from Seattle, if it makes sense.

Is it possible to get a sense of how many there are, or what they're doing by their positioning? Are they standing, talking to each other in groups? Sitting around tables?

There is one person sitting at a fairly large desk, with another in the room, but a few meters away sitting at a smaller table. Both roughly human-sized.

And there is a group of four sitting around a single table in a different room. Three are about human-sized, one is very likely a troll.

There are also some larger areas that are empty (there is stuff in there, but no people), probably storage or something like that.

I did indeed watch the EM game - mostly because my GF wanted to watch

Luckily, I'm about 70km away from Munich, so no extra tourists to watch out for😉

@Thanee, that's right, you did say it was Mexican-Italian. There actually used to be a bit of a dive in downtown Seattle called Bruno's that was a Mexican-Italian place. What cracked me up was that Bruno was the one making the Mexican food and the Mexican line cooks were the ones making the Italian food.

I also have a funny memory of a short bowling ball of a man in a loud pinstripe suit coming in with two hulking brutes (also in suits) who were sizeable and didn't say anything. The short guy went, "Heeeeey, BRUNO!" in a thick Italian accent, looking just like a stereotypical mob boss with two strong-but-silent bodyguards. It was like they were straight out of central casting. One could easily imagine a dwarf flanked by a couple orks or trolls.

It's certainly not a typical italian restaurant. If so, you also wouldn't get pizza, since they do not serve that in those.
