Ok everyone, here it is.
Remember that:
This is a text messageThis is a thoughtThis is subvocal[ Spoiler ]
Backgammon:
As Sally and Sean grab coats to head out to Manhattan to ask questions that need asking, aware that a week's time for an investigation flys by faster than an hour with a pretty hooker, Jason walks in, the cold and smell of the streets over him, back from one of his long walks
Backgammon: Sally: Jason, nice of you to make it. You got thirty seconds to grab your stuff, we're heading out to Manhattan to ask some questions. Jim'll upload the data we've got along the way. Let's go!
Jason: shrugs. "Stuff? Anything I'll be needing other than what I usually walk around with?"
Backgammon: Sally: Guess not, as long as you walk around with a decent fake ID...
Jason: Well, its not the best in the world, but it should do
Sean: "We're going weapons ultra-light. If it ain't attached, it stays"
Jim: +hears the conversation though Sally's subvocal and quickly forwards the info to Jason's commlink along with a message "I'll catch you up if you need it, got headphones?"+
Jason: "Alright." Jason heads to his couch and stashes his Colt Manhunter under one of the cushions along with its spare clips. He pulls out a handful (10) of stealth tags and pockets them. "I think so, lemme see if I've still got 'em." After a bit of shuffling around in the couch he finally pulls them out triumphantly. "Alright, good to go." He plugs the headphones in his vector xim.
Backgammon:
The team gets into Sally's cars. Doors slam and the engine whirs up, noisier in the coldness. The heater on this thing has seen better days, so it hardly gets comfortable before you reach the big multi-story parking lots where commuters switch from car to commute to head over to the island
Sean: "We should split up. No sense having any records of us together in case something goes wrong."
Sean: Sean exits the car and begins walking indirectly toward the terminal
Backgammon:
As you all shuffle into one of the buses that crosses over, one of the policeman, heavily armed and armoured, stops Sally just as she's getting on. "Hey!" she protests, but the big officer takes her aside, saying "You match the profile of someone wanted for questionning m'am. You will come with us". You all exchange glances, but it's unclear what exactly is going on.... Sally quickly throws out a text chat "I'll be ok, go on without me" before she severs commlink networking to hide her affiliation with you...
Sean: Sean growls internally at the complication, but continues on.
Backgammon:
Feeling like this is a bad start to an investigation, you sit down in the cramped bus and ride it out to Manhattan... Looks like you'll need to handle the questionning without Sally...
Jim: +Begins keeping track of one of the RFID tags Sally had on her so he can keep tabs on her, but otherwise trusts her judgement+
Backgammon:
The bus crosses the bridge and dumps you unto a large commute plaza. Manhattan swallows you, it's large neo-retro chic towers engulf you from all side. The plaza is littered with paper flyers swirling in wind gusts, as well with enough AR spam to make you blind. Physical neon advertising blinks at you from all sides, while automated sales pitches compete with metahuman voices vying to attract your purchasing attention.
Sean: "Without Sally, some else will need to take the primary role when we go to the house... Jason - You or me?"
Jason: "Definately you, think many people like talking to me?"
Sean: Sean stifles a smirk, "Ya well..."
Sean: Sean pulls up a map looking to see how far the house is from the nearest terminal.
Jim: Well, whoever it is, be sure to try and get in touch with the big man himself, may be able to get into his link.
Sean: "Not sure what angle we should use when we get to the office... Ideas?"
Jim: I'd say Sean is a corper looking for a little privacy for himself and his 'girlfriend' and wants an astral ward to prevent astral peeking
Jason: Sounds alright to me, I figure I should stay outta sight to avoid being assensed.
Jim: Not sure how long it will take Sean, Jason, you may want to hide out somewhere you can stay for an hour or two without suspicion.
Jason: Sure, any chance we could grab some cheap lunch someplace?
Sean: The only concern I have is that we need to find some direct info about the target.
Jim: That is up to you two, I just finally got a break for that breakfast.
Jason: We can always just grab some lunch while we wait for you guys to figure it out.
Jason: Err, wait for you guys to meet with his partner.
Jim: Sounds good. Jason can go grab lunch while Sean goes into the Consulting place.
Sean: We need to have a reason to get us inside that gives us a little latitude to move about. As a magical consulting firm, their magical defenses will also be serious....
Jim: Like I said, you are looking for magical protection for you and your 'girlfriend'. Insist that you want some of the best protection and ask to see one of the owners.
Sean: That will get me an appointment.. potentially a meeting. Once I have it the bluff won't keep me there..
Sean: Sally's press pass gave us latitude to ask questions....
Jim: Thats fine. If you can get a meeting with him I can try and get into his commlink and find some stuff out. If not I can at least try looking around their system and see if anything interesting comes up. I'm hoping for more info from the guy's house anyway.
Sean: Ok. We'll try that. There is one partner, right?
Jim: Right.
Sean: Do we know the name?
Jim: Kenneth Yung
Jim: Oh, and if you haven't read yet, Jason, the guy we are looking for is Ezequiel Oppenheimer
Jason: Right, hes awakened right?
Jim: Yep, professor at collage and everything.
Jason: Any idea how long he's been missing?
Sean: The only potential hiccup I see is that Valkyrie Consulting focuses on Alchemix. They may not be accepting small clients.
Jim: No clue, but most likely not very long. As for the hiccup, I'm not too worried about that, they've got to still do some small time work or they couldn't stay profitable. And if it is the case we move on and maybe try it again when Sally is around, she could likely smooth talk her way in.
Sean: Jason - You hang out while I go try and get a bead on this place.
Jason: He's a magician. And was a professor at a university. I'm sure he has something there thats a link to him.
Jim: Remember to stay cool. It isn't too big of an issue if we can't get much from them, the house is likely to be more useful anyway.
Jason: Just throwing out that we should also hit the university during our trip out today
Sean: Sean catches a cab to Valkyrie Consulting.
Jason: Jim, any chance you could get a hold of his class schedule, see what classes he might've missed?
Jim: Sure, no problem
Sean: I think he retired from teaching in '65, didn't he?
Jason: Sure, find that out too. Even a building/office would be good.
Backgammon:
The cab efficiently drops you off at the door step of a tall skyscraper. The building is a mix of stones, spires built in the old style of the past century, and shiny glass. Inside, all modernities are available. The lobby is dimly lit by a gigantic hanging lamp coming down from the ceiling, basking everything in a soft orange light. Numerous elevators quietly zoom up and down, opening their doors to the faintest little bell sound. Soft carpet absorb footsteps... it's as quiet as a library
Jim: Course it won't do us much good seeing as he hasn't taught in about six years.
Jason: He still has an office over there right?
Jim: In the school? Doubtful. Most teachers don't keep their offices after they retire.
Sean: As Sean turns to exit the cab, he takes a few seconds in doing so. He turns from the cabbie, adjusting his check bones then as he begins to open the door he lightens the color of his hair.
Jason: Jason starts to walk around looking for the cheapest sit-down restaurant he can find.
Sean: [8d6] => [6,3,4,3,6,3,4,4] Hits: (2)
Sean: (Disguise(3)+Intuition(4)+Facial Sculpture(1))
Sean: After slotting a payment to the cabbie, Sean proceeds through the front doors of the skyscaper, looking in AR for registry or a map.
Backgammon: Jason you enter a McHughs and get in line to grab a quick lunch. The wait annoys you, as the restuarant is stuffy and noisy. The teenage girl serving you gives you a disconcerted look, but doesn't miss a beat of her well-rehearsed fast-food spiel. You order something and find a corner to eat in. Nobody bothers you. You are glad to see that there are punks eating in the place that are probably as oddly dressed as you
Sean: Jim - What can you tell me about the partner?
Backgammon: You quickly locate Valkyrie Consulting - 28th floor, office 28018
Jim: Let me see. The guy is 55 and awakened. He used to work for Pentagram Publishing. Looks like he met up with Eze back in '65.
Jim: Oh, and follows the Wuxing tradition. I'm sure that means something to Jason.
Sean: Proceeding to the elevator, he summons it with the AR button and enters when the cart arrives.
Jason: So he met the prof right after his wife died?
Jason: Means quite a lot actually... since I follow that tradition myself.
Backgammon: You practically don't notice the elevator ride it is so smooth. A few silent beeps, as clean, healthy, smartly dressed young professionals get on and off your elevator, and you reach your floor
Jim: Looks like it. I don't have an exact timeline. Apperently they had been working on some research just beforehand, then Yung quit his job and joined up with Eze.
Jim: Well there you go. Lucky I know a Shaman from a Mage, much less the other traditions.
Sean: Stepping off the elevator, Sean proceeds towards his destination. He remains conscious of his surroundings and the people around them, but only peripherally. In an attempt to blend in, he appears to ignore them.
Jim: +Trys pulling up the date of death on Eze's wife, founding of Valkyrie Consulting, and Yung quitting his old job.+
Backgammon: Valerie Woods Oppenheimer died in 2065, Valkyrie Consulting was officially founded in 2064 and Yung quit his job in 2065
Jason: Do the kids live with daddy? Or have they gone on to university yet?
Backgammon: You (Sean) reach the door to Valkyrie Consulting - the company name is written in gold on the door with an interesting logo that you are not sure what it is, but looks suitably mystical. The door is locked, and there is a small doorbell
Jim: No, far as I know he lives alone. Couldn't find much about his sun, and his daughter is off to collage, apperently awakened as well. Couldn't find much else though.
Sean: He looks to AR for information.
Backgammon: "Welcome to Valkyrie Consulting. Please ring for assistance"
Sean: +Pressing the AR button+
Backgammon: A few seconds pass before a young asian elven lady opens the door. She has blond hair tied in a elegant bun on the top of he head, held by expensive looking pins. She is wearing a somber suit with mini skirt, high quality material. She smiles at you. "Yes?"
Sean: "Good day ma'am. I understand that you specialize in matters of the arcane?"
Backgammon: She almost imperceptibly raises an eyebrow. "Name?"
Sean: Gonna wing this a bit... I have a better idea than a girlfriend.
Jim: +Tries doing a scan of the woman for her commlink+
Sean: "Markus Smith."
Jim: No trouble
Backgammon: (Sean, roll your favourite social skill)
Backgammon: After a blink - "I'm afraid I cannot find any appointment for you... mr. Smith. Did you have an appointment?"
Sean: (I like etiquette for this encounter: Chr(5)+Etiquette(3))
Sean: [8d6] => [2,3,4,5,3,6,3,3] Hits: (2)
Jim: [16d6] => [1,2,3,4,1,6,1,3,3,4,3,4,3,5,1,6] Hits: (3)
Jim: (Alright, I'm going to try a quick hack)
Jim: [16d6] => [2,2,2,3,4,3,5,6,6,1,1,1,6,4,1,3] Hits: (4)
Sean: "No, I am acting as an intermediary for a few clients and am hoping to speak with Mr Yung or Mr Oppenheimer about options."
Jim: Hey Jason, you still there?
Sean: Sean does his best to smile and seem professional, but pleasant.
Sean: He makes eyes contact and tries to tries to get a read on the young woman.
Jason: I'm here, what'cha need?
Backgammon: jim: You zoom through cyberspace and reach her commlink's node. Your personna narrows his eyes, does a few virtual quick steps and jumps in through a spotted gap in her virtual defenses. Easy peasy, you smile to yourself, as you find yourself in her commlink
Backgammon: (sean, roll con)
Jim: You listening right? May need to advise Sean on some magic stuff. Relay it through me, can't have him looking at his commlink all the time for texts.
Jason: No problem
Jim: +begins looking around in her commlink, spesificly trying to pull contact lists and stored passwords. I'll also pull up her appointment book.+
Sean: [8d6] => [3,4,6,4,2,5,4,5] Hits: (3)
Backgammon: She hesitates for a heartbeat, trying hard not to be obvious about looking you over. "Of course, sir, please come in and be seated". She lets you in the office. Light sconces built into the walls give out a subtle, library-esque lighting, fittingly as the walls are covered with old wooden libraries. The office is well decorated with large, wooden furniture pieces. The secretary sits behind a desk and gives you another smile. "May I have your SIN and the name of the company you represent?"
Jim: +is going to try to block her background check request and pull up an OK sign on the check.
Sean: Sean hesitates for a moment trying to think of a way to gracefully exit the room... Until he sees Jim's signal, he then types a quick message as he feigns transmitting the data.
Sean: How's Macintosh Security for a company?
Jim: Sounds good, I'll give her all she needs to think it is legit, won't last forever though.
Backgammon: (you are intercepting a signal, killing it, and inserting a flase signal that looks like the proper response. You must first succeed in Computer+Browse, as there are LOTS of things going on on her commlink)
Backgammon: (then roll Sniffer+Hacking)
Jim: +Brings up the proper data for Markus Smith, but list his job as 'Macintosh Security Representative'+
Jim: (Alright, browse first)
Jim: [16d6] => [5,5,6,1,6,2,6,5,6,3,3,2,2,1,4,1] Hits: (7)
Jim: (And now the sniffer)
Jim: [13d6] => [4,5,3,3,5,2,1,6,6,6,3,4,3] Hits: (5)
Backgammon: Jim stands in the middle of a huge nexus, watching beams of light criss cross. His head moves impossibly quick, a blur, as he locks on to the right signal, split second timing, as it leave the commlink. He grabs the beam with his bear hands, pulling it back and crashing it to the floor, bouncing it around the commlink like a ricocheting bullet, as he sticks his hands in and feels himself manipulating it's Core data. Corrupted, he allows the signal to return to the port of origin, his brow damp with sweat, but smiling crookedly in satisfaction
Jim: Looks like you should be good.
Jim: +Starts working on a basic page for 'Macintosh Security', making sure to put in the really flashy sort of stuff that a newer company would have to draw attention.+
Backgammon: The secretary stares absent mindedly into space for a few seconds, then returns her gaze on Sean. "Very well Mt. Smith. Mt. Yung should be able to see you next week. When would you like to schedule a meeting?"
Sean: Sean mulls two different tacts, then tries a blend of the two.. "Next week... Oh dear.... Can you recommend some of your competition who might be able to sassist sooner? I would much rather deal with you," He says smiling at her, "but my timing is a little more critical than that.."
Backgammon: Jim: Having wiped the sweat from your brow, and seemingly on standby, you start poking around in files on the commlink. As you are poking around into a drawer, you feel a shadow over you and look up, seein a sort of fish thing with a spotlight, swimming around above you. (Roll Hacking+Stealth)
Jim: [16d6] => [1,3,6,6,5,6,2,5,1,6,5,1,6,5,5,3] Hits: (10)
Backgammon: Sean - She seems to experiment an internal crisis for a second, then smiles at you again and says "One moment please, sir" and her gaze goes glossy again.
Jim: (Going to try keeping track of what she is doing. Oh, and how is she accessing her commlink, can I tell?)
Backgammon: Jim narrows his eyes at the fish thing, his lip curling in slight annoyance at being disturbed. His personna seems to slowly melt, until he becomes aether, the very materia of cyberspace... "I am the machine" he thinks, as he becomes one with the operating system, and returns his greedy paws to sifting through drawers
Backgammon: (the secretary, who you uncover is called Tricia Sun Lee, aged 28, is accessing her commlink through AR)
Jim: (I ment like is she using a trode net, or DNI through Datajack or what.)
Backgammon: The secretary returns her gaze to Sean, smiling very nicely. "Mr. Yung can see you right now, Mr. Smith. Right this way". She gets up from her desk, walks around and leads you towars a rich wooden door down a L turn down the hall
Backgammon: (You poke around node connections and see her PAN is connected to a DNI device, which identifies itself as being a datajack)
Sean: Sean follows the woman, happy to have bluffed his way this far, concerned that one fell step and the jig will be up.
Jim: +Puts more work into setting up that fake page for now, setting up plenty of 'under construction' areas to cover what he can't get to+
Backgammon: You are led into an office, dimly lit with fade orange lighting like the rest of this place. More bookshelves line the walls, along with an expensive looking world globe mounted in detailed wood. Kenneth Yung, an asian man with white hair, skin that shows his age and very narrow eyes, sits behind a large oak desk. He is wearing a suit with dark reds and black. He gets up as you come in, nods and indicated for you to sit in a leather seat. "Mr. Smith of Macintosh Security... what can I do for you, sir?"
Jim: +Will do a scan for Yung's commlink when he finishes setting up a decently convincing page and grabbing the various files from Tricia's commlink.+
Sean: Sean reaches out to shake the man's hand. Leary of spells that divine truth, Sean begins the task of carefully picking his words...
Backgammon: Yung bows, then shakes your hand, once, slowly. You get the feeling he is observing you rather intently
Jim: [16d6] => [3,5,6,5,2,5,6,3,4,5,5,5,5,2,5,6] Hits: (11)
Sean: "My Yung. I am so very happy that I was able to steal a few minutes of your time. In the course of my work, my firm finds itself dealing with any number of situations."
Sean: "To that end... I understand that you special
Jim: +Throws a link of the site he is building to Sean so he can make sure the info lines up.+
Sean: -ize in the things arcane."
Sean: ""Wards are something I am currently interested in."
Backgammon: He nods. "Mm-hm".
Backgammon: Jim, you find a small, glowing fiery ball that seems to be Yung's commlink
Sean: "We beleive we may have a situation brewing that may require some defenses of a magical nature."
Backgammon: Mmhm?
Sean: "My personal expertise in things of an arcane nature is extremely limited. What can you tell me about options to protect a client going about their day to day activities?"
Jim: +Tries doing a quick hack into Yung's commlink, abandoning his attention on his other projects for the second or so it will take.+
Jim: [16d6] => [1,1,4,4,2,4,3,3,2,4,1,6,2,2,2,6] Hits: (2)
Jim: [16d6] => [6,3,1,5,2,1,2,2,2,3,5,6,6,2,3,2] Hits: (5)
Sean: Sean keeps enough truth to insure that he reads as truthful while attempting to direct the conversation to security related questions.
Sean: His concern is to provide time for Jim to work, not to gain any information that is relevant to the disappearance.
Sean: (I would like for Sean to try and work in a question or two about the partner, from the perspective of available resources)
Sean: [8d6] => [1,5,6,1,3,4,1,1] *GLITCH* Hits: (2)
Jim: [16d6] => [5,5,4,4,6,2,6,3,6,5,5,2,4,6,2,5] Hits: (9)
Sean: (CRAP, CRAP, CRAP.. Spend an edge to buy off the glitch)
Backgammon: Jim eyes the ball of fire suspiciously, advancing slowly. The heat from the mini sun is intense, you cover your face with your hand. "Well.. now or never" you tell yourself and make a run for it. Large lashes of fire scorch at you, forcing you to abort your entry.. letting out a yell of bravery, you leap into the fire and land on the otherside tumbling and rolling. You look up, and instead of finding a pristine garden, the entire place seems to be buring. You choke on smoke. You notice you leg is on fire, slowly fading out of the node, but quickly pat it out. You look around in horror, thought the smoke and fire, realising the node if on fullk alert and actively trying to get rid of you
Backgammon: Sean - You try to steer conversation this way and that, working in subtle questions, but you find Yung to be exceptionally non-committal and responding with Mmmhm and Mmm very often, causing you to speak a whole lot
Sean: Sean tries to reign the conversation to an end. "Do you have a standard rate for magical services?"
Jim: +Works quickly to find the following data in the following order:Contact lists, stored passwords, files related to Eze. Jim compleatly drops his attention to his other projects to try and get this done as quickly as possable.+
Backgammon: Sean - Finally, after having squeezed everything out of you, Yung finally gives out more than one syllable."Mr. Smith, we do not really specialize in magical security per se." You see him calmly reach down to his commlink, and push a button, and calmly put his commlink away. (Jim, the world around you implodes. Resist dumpshock). "We mostly specialize in helping non magical companies, or emerging magical companies, expand their magical side or integrate other Awakened practises into their normal business processes."
Jim: [11d6] => [6,4,6,1,3,1,2,6,6,4,3] Hits: (4)
Jim: (That is Will 5 + Biofeedback Filter 6 by the way)
Backgammon: right. You take a box of physical damage, a sligh nosebleed, and find yourself with a pounding headache, wandering what the fuck just happened
Sean: Sean accepts the role change with a "Hmmmm"
Backgammon: "How is your investigation going, detective?"
Sean: "Not nearly as well as I would like"
Backgammon: His lips tighten into an almost-smile. "Indeed".
Sean: "What can you tell me then?"
Backgammon: "You did make it pass Miss Sun well enough, perhaps there is hope yet
Backgammon: "I must admit I was expecting Miss Perkings. And you do not look like anyone from the agency, your disguise is very good"
Backgammon: "He narrows his eyes. Mister O'Malley then..."
Sean: Sean listens as the man continues to speak.. Thinking, This guy knows too much.. How does that says go? Oh yea, geek the mage.
Backgammon: "I believe your time would be better spent investigating people other than those who hire you, though it was inevitable we would meet. The police, presumably, had the same ideas has you."
Sean: Sean stands. "Well, thank you for the practice." Sean tips an imaginary hat to the man as he heads towards the door.
Backgammon: "A pleasure, mister o'Malley"
Sean: He stops by the secretary on the way out. "When my business is done, you wanna get a cup of soycaf?"
Backgammon: She cocks an eyebrow at you, and this time makes no attempt to hide her looking up and down a you. She looks you in the eyes and cocks and eyebrow again, tipping her head slightly, and leaves it at that.
Sean: Regardless of her answer, he then finds his own way out and heads down the elevator.
Jason: Well, better the devil you know I suppose...
Sean: We seem to have identified Mr Johnson.
Jim: Shame Jason wasn't around. I'd guess he used some kind of magic disguise.
