He absorbs electrical and EM energy. He can increase the amount he absorbs by concentrating too, in order to up the power of his optic blasts. Also in the OHTMU (Official handbook of The Marvel Universe) it says he actually fires exotic energy from another dimension that interacts with matter in our reality like gravity does, hence gravity beam. Just FYI.
