Ouch. Yes, many people in online games are douchebags, and on behalf of all sane people, I apologize that your first experience sucked so badly.

Thanks. I have since found that for each jerk there are ten more nice people online.

Slotting in I337 Linguasoft!

1: Looking for level 40 Physical/Mystic Adept for Bug City/Renraku Arcology run.

2: 400 damage-per-second melee Street Samurai looking for team.

3: Don't you know that melee street samurai are inefficient? You must be new.

This kind've bullshit is everywhere, and if you've managed to avoid it, I consider you very lucky.

Thanks for the translation. I have to admit I was flashing back to Airplane and the jive translations. I have trouble getting over my reticence in butchering the english language.

Actually, I think that for each jerk there are ten nice people online, but 5 of those nice people still act like asshats. The link sums it up best...Normal+Annonymity+Audience=????

Really? You're getting a 6:5 ratio of asshats to nicers?

Wow. Where do you hang out? I want to be there.

Edit:
It should be noted that I do frequent a few places that have a 0:1 asshat:nicer ratio.

I can't really complain since I'm one of the asshats...

Seriously though, it's not that bad. Just a little exaggeration on my part. The internet does bring out the bad manners in many of us, though.

Someone mentioned to me that in the Shadowrun universe, 4-Chan never happened.

Well, if there's an MMO, GUESS WHAT, IT HAPPENED ANYWAY.

Yeah, the game could be great, but I fear the dickery of the player base.

That might've been me, as I pointed out that in the SR universe Eternal September never happened, and 4chan is basically a website dedicated to letting the internet know that it's still September 1993.

For which we should all thank Cyberzombie Christ. I can think of few things more terrifying than 4chan in full simsense, and that includes the business end of a snuff BTL.

The ideal situation for my part would be something along the lines of a skill-based EVE, with the rest of the game resembling something like Guild Wars. The Guild Wars approach takes the instances of things like City of Heroes and goes a bit further with it -- the only time you encounter other players is in the main cities. You can still group, etc. if you like, and you can get NPC henchmen to round out your group if you'd rather go solo. I'd like that.

As discussed by someone, the idea of the expansions each covering a nation or region with one or more major cities would be a good one, with also the possibility of expansions grouping together a number of themed cities, i.e. cities under siege (from various sources), dragon-owned cities like Denver, etc. could also work.

And the idea of a dedicated Desert Wars PvP server or simply a cluster of zones is a good one. In fact, depending how things go (I don't think there's much canon info on Africa) I could see the majority of Africa being a PvP area.

Who'd be up for some Corporate RvR? God, could you imagine trying to gain dominion points in a 10-realm game.

Actually this is sounding pretty sweet. Choice of playing a corper or a runner. Corpers get bonuses for being part of a corp but are always flagged for RvR. Runners don't get any bonuses but are only flagged while they are "on the pay" of a corp. Could have NPC and PC Johnsons for the Runners to talk to to get jobs whereas the Corpers talk to their divisions bosses (ie. Guild Leaders).

Of course you'd probably still need to add some sort of PvE and instance mechanism to this just to make sure you catch the carebear crowd. Corporate Executive gives q's to the Corpers and the NPC Johnsons (who naturally hang out in bars, clubs, parkades) give them to runners. Quests give you half the money up front and half after. If it is a facility run it is instanced. Players (corp and runner) could hire out their services to other teams for part of the cut if needs be.

Pick some appropriate city for the main PvE/limited PvP stuff (ie. Seattle or Hong Kong) and pick some city to royally mess up as the place where the corps are in "active war" with each other as your RvR lake.

This is sounding pretty cool actually. Let's all petition for someone to make this.

anarchy online with diff graphics...

btw, i ones toyed with plans to do a fps roguelike with cyberpunk/transhuman elements using quake 1.

Blade
And where the technology to make long continuous pieces of fabric for female clothes has been lost.
hobgoblin
I ones read that the length of a skirt showed how well a economy was doing...

that is, longer skirts showed a worse off economy, as then using that much fabric showed one had money to spare...

Here's a thought, and only a thought, is that each server (or collection of servers) is a different city. Sure, means that each server is effectively running a different game, but only in layout. You can make things very modular. For instance, "cleaning ghouls out of the sewers" instanced quest is going to be identical no matter what city you're in. Even the surface itself can be quite modular to appear very much the same on a small scale (The Barrens of Seattle and "all of Denver" will likely look the same), but over all it can be laid out differently quite easily.

Think about how TF2 levels are made, all the same basic stuff is there but no two maps are the same (admittedly you can go a LONG WAY on just brushes and textures). Really all you'd need are some pre-fab (shipped on disc) city blocks with IDs, then when connected to a city the server sends the grid layout (which chunks go where). You could include unique ones as well, of course, such as the Renraku arcology, the Orc Underground, etc. and take less of a hit to used disc space than WoW, but without the loading times of Second Life.

Anyway, the idea is that sure you can go to other cities, it's just a server transfer. wink.gif
