Uh, can't find anything saying that air-burst grenades don't allow dodging - they just have reduced scatter, 1d6-1 vs 3d6.

By dodging out of the way he influences how close
to him the ball lands. And yes, that's pretty realistic - you see a grenade coming your way, you duck the hell for cover.
