Unless you're guarding against a Pandemic. Then you can keep all of the air, water, and insects from a neighboring country out.

With sattelites that can pinpoint your location to within inches, and drones that can hover indefinitely, hundreds of miles is not a challenge. Besides which, you don't have to cover the entire border equally; you can focus on populated areas.
