The original batch of battlemechs were pulled straight from anime sources, Superdimensional Fortress Macross and others. It's not just a general resemblence... they were anime mecha. Those designs have all been officially replaced now, but if you ask an old timer like me what a Marauder looks like, the description you'll get will match a Zentradai Officer's Pod, not that hideous piece of junk from the Project Phoenix TR.
The feel of the game has always been totally different from the anime sources, though.
