Full Version: Character Concepts You Never Get to Play

The Jake
How many of you have a character you've been ITCHING to play but NEVER get the time/opportunity to do so? Been sitting on a pre-generated character that is 100% RAW legal but for one reason or another, just can't seem to catch a break? Maybe you're playing another character you love too much or have been playing too long to retire?

I'm mentally playing around with a character I've been play for awhile, but I'm wanting to play a troll with face abilities. Not necessarily a social adept but not a magician (I've played too many) but ideally someone with detective/social skills, with some hacking and combat skills. I don't have much more than an idea though really but I like the idea of turning a stereotype (ugly stupid trog) on its head.

Discuss.

SR1-3. The cyberpreppie. grinbig.gif
Ol' Scratch
I have a Pixie Black Magician/Made Man I've always wanted to play, but just can't find a suitable game for him. He really appeals to me because the concept is just really twisted. I'm also a fan of Windling Nethermancers in Earthdawn for the same reason. Just the idea of one wearing a stylish pinstripe Berwick suit, packing a Morrissey Elan, and being as intimidating as shit while a pair of butterfly wings flutter behind him... well, it entertains me greatly.
Stumps
I usually do well playing everything that I think of or want to make.

But in the spirit of sharing our favored ideas...I suppose I could say...

I've wanted to make and have played a:
- Small scrapper kid who packs a punch more than most expect, and favors street gang fighting styles, and yet is tangled in the web of running with high caliber characters.

- Gun's akimbo descendant of a Catholic IRA activist family that carries 13 firearms on his person; 12 named after an Apostle, Judas being a Flachette round weapon only, and the 13th being a Sniper Rifle that comes apart in 3 pieces (each named after a member of the holy trinity) and is loaded blindly from a mixed pile of tranq and live ammo (it's up to God, in his mind, as to whether they live or die...not him).

- A poor fellow who tripped too hard one night while watching his favorite oldy, "Matrix", and became convinced that he was actually Neo, that his Fixer was Morpheus, and that the world was really the Matrix he was trapped in. He died trying to stop bullets by holding out his hand and saying, "No".

- Retired old mercenary unwillingly pulled back in to the long haul due to an unfortunate series of events; namely his house being blown up shortly after some uninvited guests just happened to crash his place to get cover from their hunters.

- A blind and deaf martial artist who actually sucked at martial arts, but thought he was fantastic. His reputation was un-waranted, yet somehow the legend of him became larger than the reality of his work and renown seemed to continue to come to the blind and deaf phys-ad.
He was an excellent typist, however, and spent his day job as one of the more sought after, privately licensed, audio typist's. He did this by having the recorder play the sounds through a deck that translated to touch sensations by shorthand phonetic components.

Those are some of my favored that I would be longing to still play as; if I had not done so.

I'm not sure if the new rules allow it, but Classic Earthdawn did not allow Windling Nethermancers (It's a prominent racial restriction on the Nethermancer Discipline). There are multiple in-game fluffy references to support this as well, beyond the rule restrictions. This isn't to say that mechanically, you couldn't play one, but it wouldn't be allowed by RAW. So in a way, it IS a character concept you never got to play, at least in the past rulesets. *grin*

I was expecting my Technomancer to die, and made a backup to replace him. The original must have heard that he had been replaced, and no refuses to die, despite the best (worst) efforts of his player. The replacement is a mage of Seductress specializing in the orgy spell. He hits the entire room with an orgy spell. All of the noncombatants will drop in throws of orgasm, leaving only the serious competition standing. Along with illusins and mental manipulations, he should be awesome. Throw in some face abilities for dual direction.
JaronK
Mongo the Power Troll, an adept with enhanced Heavy Weapons abilities and hearing who is geasaed such that he has to listen to heavy metal (including subgenres like troll thrash metal) for his abilities to work. Lives underneath a troll thrash metal club near the barrens, and has every social flaw you can get (but the metal people like him... sorta). I always wanted to try that out.

Draco18s
Got one for D&D *sigh*
Similar concept for ShadowRun has been played, though I lament not having gotten to change to drake form.

The concept is pretty vague, but I did run into a(n amazing) flash animation that I can point to and got "that."

How many of those aren't big nasty Trolls?biggrin.gif

I still want to play that completly cybered char, but I just can't get it to work properly statwise for a starting game. (and at cons I usually just get a weird look and have to play another char)
Blade
The neotenic dwarf who dyed his skin blue, made his feet and nose bigger and added a small spheric tail and walks around wearing white pants (with shoes) and a white phrygian cap.
You could even have an entire team: the leader would have red clothes (probably a mage too), the streetsamurai would have a heart tattoed on his arm, the rigger would be in coveralls with a pen behind his ear...

The cyberskating/skimmering centaur.

Ouch. I just hope my wife doesn't see this post, or she might start getting ideas.

I've always wanted to play an ork swordsman physad.

about half i think.
EvilP
I've been thinking all day of creating a VERY villainous social adept with the geas that his powers don't work unless he has a white cat with him. He may even be infirm meaning that he moves around in some sort of one-man vehicle with a leather seat all the time, laughing as his plans come together and minions compete for his favour.

Also the 'cat' is actually a very realistic emotitoy with a commlink built into it. He must either pet the cat or speak to it for it to work since it only uses a skinlink and voice commands - "Get back in my lap this very instant Miss White!"

--

Another character concept I was considering was a type of rogue super doctor with incredible logic and med/bio/cyber skills, but then I found out that he wouldn't really be able to create his own biotech and nanoware without a facility or something. His only combat skill would be Exotic Weapons (Laser) with specialization in pistols, an elegant and sophisticated weapon for a man who can appreciate a cauterized wound.
kanislatrans
lately, I have been playing around with a phys ad based on Lone wolf Mcquade complete with a cybered german shepard...doubt ill ever get to play him. had a technomancer who thought he was "the disco king" named Diamond Dave that got shot down by the GM. I even memorized all of the lyrics to "Brickhouse" " Boogie shoes" and "Saturday night fever" so I could add a little flavor. frown.gif

I'm a Chargen Junkie an tend to put together 1 or 2 characters a week just for shits and giggles so I have probably 100+ charcters that i will never play.
a
If I had one Character I would love to play in a one shot.(cause she is in no way legal) It would be Echo, and elven cyber monster NPC, The concept was just how much cyber/bio can you cram into a character if you had infinite resources. she has 10 million worth of implants. (including a kilo of C12 and a large vessel of VITAS X) the idea was "what if a group within the ucas gov planned on returning the U.S.A to its former glory by creating super soldiers who would ifiltrate various cities and explode, spreading disease so that the " star chamber could rise to power.
remmus
been playing around with the idea of a gunslinger adept, basicly what would happend if you took a cowboy and put him in a Asian gun ho action movie and add the cocky, confidents of a typical anime character.
Karoline
Possession based free spirit. Only problem is that with a BP system it is too weak to do anything, and with karmagen is too powerful to really fit in frown.gif Going to work on it using a modified karmagen system and see what I can come up with, then I still need to get a GM to agree to such an odd character.
Prime Mover
I had concept of the mind thief from previous edition that I never got to use. Influence spells and possession meta magic. Player possession meta magic now gone it seems.
Medicineman
Jim & Tim Possible
As Adults(Twens) and Ki-Ads with a special Ki-Power "Simultaneous Move"
I played them only once or twice, their Runner Names are Mirror & Image

with a Twindance
Medicineman
Rotbart van Dainig
A burned out Parrot Shapeshifter turned Technomancer.
Megu
This is what comes from watching way too much shoujo anime. She'll come off at first, at least, to the other players/PCs as a quiet, moody gillette ganger, with little fear of anything, and a mysterious <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanakotoba#Flowers_and_their_meanings">lotus</a href> tattoo over her heart ("far from the one s/he loves" being the intended meaning). In truth, and this will be revealed whenever somebody figures it out or at a dramatically appropriate moment, her co-ganger girlfriend is in jail for a lengthy term, and she's running in the desperate hope of getting her back out. That desperation is what makes her fight with such recklessness; she'd rather go out with a bang than never see her again. I'm also toying with the idea of having something bad have happened to the rest of her gang (a syndicate, the Star, maybe a betrayal from inside?), but angst is best at just the right level and there's definitely such a thing as too much. Regardless, her character comes out as sort of a mix of Juri Arisugawa, Spike Spiegel and Molly Millions.

And yes, maybe it smells like Mary Sueism, but my group would eat this right up if I ever got to do something besides GM.
Johnny B. Good
I always wanted to play my D&D mute schizophrenic gnome who had magical hallucinations and devoted his life to Golem mastery, but alas it was not meant to be.
Udoshi
I'd always wanted to play a Nartaki bartender adept. Bartending's the dayjob - he's an double ambidextrous six gun six-shooting sammy when he's off the clock. Plays a mean piano too.

Willpower ten dwarf technomancer. The only way to get ten, is to take a permanent braveheart infusion - which makes this character very very forgetful. Short, grumpy, amnesiac and can hack your brain. Likes to dumpshock everyone and everything, cuz it doesn't affect him
IceKatze
hi hi

I've always wanted to play an awakened critter who had its brain transplanted into a metahuman form full cyberbody.
Stahlseele
Well, there's Screech . . Basically, i went all out on Ear and Voice Cyber on that one . . and some Eye-stuff too.
Built in some Speakers too. So he could route his voice through those Speakers and talk without moving the mouth.
Or he could talk while moving his mouth NOT IN SYNCHRONIZATION WITH HIS VERY OWN WORDS. Idea for further improvement was to use all of this and modify it so he could, with his voice-cyber, re-create the effects of the ares screech sonic rifle. I was, in no uncertain terms, told never to play this one.
And i have Blurr too . . Basically, i went all out on Ruthenium and image scanner. Built in, Built into clothin. Also Shifting Eye and Hair-Colour.
As close to a chameleon as possible using SR3 Stuff. And then i made it so he appeared blurry to everybody looking at him. Yes, i was told never to play this one too.

And i have lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots more of such character ideas on my HDD ^^
Maelstrome
this character. XP which i believe is now out of date since it was made before sr4a. and the gm i was with had a few houserules about chargen. so i doubt this is viable now if it ever was.

Character wakes up. He is a mage of the Zoroastrian tradition. knows all his Skills and powers, and lots of Knowledge Skills related to the mythology, but he doesn't remember anything about how he got where he is, or what happened before he passed out. He believes he is a fallen angel, once in the service of Damoish Upamana, the Yazata (archangel) who serves Ahura Mazda as a personification of the power of anathema. This Yazata rides with Ahura Mazda, uttering awful maledictions against offenders against righteousness. The character believes that if he serves righteousness well here on Earth, he will be readmitted into the ranks of the angels. He believes that a great battle between good and evil is upon us.

The character is built around Banishing, force of will, goodness, and spells that (can) fight demons (wraiths, shedim, spirits serving something he labels evil... whatever). He has an amulet that helps him 'speak anathema against demons' (?Banishing Focus?). Whether he really is an angel, or just crazy, can be negotiated between GM and player.
Marwynn
"Slotty"

Named after Scotty from Star Trek, only of course he is a Skillwired and overweight wageslave. His above average mental stats lets him be more flexible than other wageslaves and is often assigned to do jobs on his own. He works for corps who outsource temps and workers from an agency of sorts, saves the corp from spending the nuyen on the cyber necessary.

Analytical Mind
Juryrigger
Restricted Gear: Move By Wire 2
Day Job 2

Very capable guy with a mismatched set of cyber.

The skillsofts are the limiting factor, either they'll make the game too easy or unnecessarily complicate the campaign for all involved.
Medicineman
"BlackJack" the Technomancer Hobbit.
Son of my famous SR3 Hobbit Mage "Jack of Hearts"(I played him for about 300 Karma). He looks like Prince (only 1 Meter Tall,1,05 in High Heels) from Purple Rain

He who dances on big feet
Medicineman
Ascalaphus
An Elven Technomancer Face. Go for the frightening charisma, empathy software complex forms and lots of sprites. Wear holy-looking white robes and be all airy and nice when you're in a good mood. Be a good vegetarian. Believe that cybertech is so passe, that the matrix needs to evolve to the point where it exists in natural technomantic communion with all mankind. Start holy wars against people who oppose this obviously beautific vision.
AKWeaponsSpecialist
As a player, I've wanted to play a Theurge-summoned Fire Spirit....simply because it would be quite interesting (and fun) to play a shadowrunning vigilante angel.....however, a Seraphim guidance spirit could also be pretty slick.
The main problem with this is no one else in the group wants to GM....The previous GM decided he wanted to play, and since I have the most proficiency with the rules in the group, I was the best candidate. C'est la vie, I guess.
Weaver95
A vampire - one who was an unwitting carrier from before the awakening. He wasn't drained, he fell unconscious and transformed when the awakening happened. But nobody knew about HMHVV back then, so he ended up getting buried in the family crypt before the transformation was completed. So he spends a couple decades unconscious until a group of ghouls looking for a meal crack open the coffin and he wakes up to find that the entire world has changed on him.

I thought that'd make for a fun concept. someone trying to get a grip on the fact that they're a vampire AND dealing with the culture/future shock of the world changing so radically.

Chrysalis
Flower, a 24 year old girl whose speciality is a Keith Richards like extensive pharmacological knowledge of all kinds of drugs.

Favourite quote: "I remember using that... once. Or was it three hits, can't remember."

Considering the standard procedures applied today before inhumation to most deceased persons, I strongly doubt he would have survived.
Method
I had a player who created an amnesiac physad who thought he was a comic book super hero. Captain Justice, IIRC.

Another player had a wakyambi elf houngan with a pet Blackberry Cat possessed by a free loa who actually called the shots (talk about split personalities...)

Neither one of these got much playing time, as I recall, which was disappointing, especially the elf. That would be a great character concept in SR4 with the new rules for free spirit PCs and owning paracritters.
Tachi
Quad-dexterous pistol-Sam nartaki with four cyber-arms, and a masters degree in Accounting. Yeah, I went there.

Oh, and his name was Harendra 'Mook' Mukerji. <<Find that Kipling reference, if you can. One of my favorite poems.

"He shot at the strong and he slashed at the weak
From the Salween scrub to the Chindwin teak:

He crucified noble, he sacrificed mean,
He filled old ladies with kerosene:"

Only needs to happen once. wink.gif

We had a guy in our game be someone who was chyrogenically frozen pre-awakening.

Shame the player was a little too....enthusiastic. We got the entire run (blowing up a fireworks factory) blamed on him, as he was the last one to attempt escape and the mage was in close proximity and cast a force 6 Alter Memories on him.

He tried to set a booby trap for the cops who would be coming into the (burning) building.

It was sacrifice the guy who'd never played the game before and was treating it like Scion* or everyone makes new characters.

*If you've never heard of Scion, its the game where you play godlings. You have divine powers and can get people (mortals) to worship you (unintentionally) by using these powers in front of them. The one game I saw run was on an epic, never before seen, never to be seen again, scale. For reference, there are 3 levels: Hero (Hercules level), Demigod, and God. Any one of the three levels can be played in over the course of months without ever getting enough EXP to "buy" into the next level. The game I watched went from starting hero to full on god in 11 weeks. Above mentioned player was trying to play ShadowRun the same way.

not necessarily - esp if someone requests a 'natural' burial. not everyone gets embalmed, in fact several religions even forbid it.
Angry Ork
A character i always wanted to try, but could never come up with a detailed enough back ground to justify, as well as being way, way to specified for my taste, was a 4 armed troll meta-variant, adding a pair of cyber arms, then pick up 2 MMG's, 2 Ballistic shields, and a custom set of Mil-spec Armor.
The Jake
Extending my first post -
What I'd REALLY like to play is a troll genius TM who uses Unarmed Combat + Resonance Trodes to devastating effect, but I don't see a way to do it that couldn't be outclassed by a cybered-variant or adept.

Tech_Rat
@Karoline

--Possession based free spirit. Only problem is that with a BP system it is too weak to do anything, and with karmagen is too powerful to really fit in (IMG:style_emoticons/default/frown.gif) Going to work on it using a modified karmagen system and see what I can come up with, then I still need to get a GM to agree to such an odd character.--

One of my friends did this on a 400 point BP system. It was tough until after we got around thirty, forty Karma... Thinking that way, get your GM to allow a 450 or 475 point BP system. That would give you a bit too much freedom though... Maybe 430 BP would be enough to make you not too weak to start. Won't be too powerful comparatively. This is also for SR4.

My characters:

Tech-Rat: A web obsessed, gaming junkie technomancer. More mishaps than necessary. Gremlins level two, low pain tolerance, photographic memory. Great hacker when his bad luck didn't kick in.

Killer Bee: A dwarf living out of his van, loaded to the trim with explosive compounds. Wound up going blind due to looking into a portal into the deep realms.

Kit: A shapeshifter Fox PhysAd. Yeah, I'm not allowed to make anything like him again. Especially after getting the animal link initiation bonus and making the linked animal a female fox... I was drunk and bored.

Why do all of my characters have animal like names?

What I really wanted to do was make a "head-in-a-jar" rigger stored on a geo-synchronus spacestation, piloting a human sized drone modeled after "Zeke" from Ctrl-Alt-Del Comics.
Chrysalis
I've always wanted to play Frank Miller's Batman. 'nuff said.
Stray dog
I always wanted to play a melee gunman, wielding both a sword and a pistol. Recently, while reading arsenal, I found that nice martial arts section. Off hand training and two weapon style, firefight twice to reduce the penalty for using a gun in melee, maybe sangre y acero for the same bonus, you'd get a full parry while attacking at point blank(optional +2 dice) each pass. Kind of deadly. Of course, automatics would be be stronger. A SMG would work fine in melee and you could get an assault rifle to "snipe", but the pistol looks cooler in my mind.
Sixgun_Sage
Stray Dog, an amnesiac elf who beleived himself to be an adept, in fact he was a technomancer with some really interesting resonances and sprites (we where playing a "seasoned runners" game where we started with a fairly high amount of karma) that allowed him to mimick a gunslinger adept fairly well, was going to have him regain his knowledge of technomancy over the course of the game but, for various reasons, the game died 3 sessions in...
Exocet
All of them in SR3:
-A bullfighting adept. With his bullfighter suit, cape, sword and banderillas.
-A Maori adept using Dance as a centering skill, so he dances the haka (like those NZ rugby players) before combat.
-A "necromancer" that uses a custom limited version of the "animate" spell to telekinetically control human skeletons.
-A schizophrenic ex-marine catholic fundamentalist street sam, who believes the voice in his head is God ordering him to eliminate all sinners before he comes back to the world (apocalypse).
-Satyr shaman with Bacchus as a totem who, due to geas, must be at least a bit drunk to cast spells.
-Face/Decker mix who manufactures and sells BTLs between missions.
-A psycopathic organlegger ghoul adept with Tamanous contacts. He sells them a few organs and eats everything else.
And more to come once I find my text files...
Nifar
I had planned to play a midget ork street sam who had tainted his sword with gangrene, but my GM vetoed it.
Stahlseele
I made a Ki-Mage once with the spell Levitation modified a bit.
Needs touch to cast, does not need touch to maintain. Thus, Hit, cast, throw target far away while being weak as an elf.
Draco18s
I suppose a "sees the code" kind of character would be interesting in ShadowRun.

Some kind of mage who interprets magic as computer code and "hacks life."

I'd probably need a custom tradition to pull it off, and it'd probably end up looking a lot like the So You Want to be a Wizard books magic. Which isn't a bad thing, but magic works so much differently in that world: custom spells are the norm (because you're trying to fix things and undo entropy) and don't take all that long to make (relatively speaking--a spell to clean up all of the oil and other pollutants of San Fran Bay (typically one use) is on the order of days to weeks,* unlike ShadowRun where you have to research a new spell and it takes weeks to months).

I think it'd be a lot of fun to bend the rules of ShadowRun creating custom spells that no other mage could really understand. Subspace pockets (for storage), and the like. Obviously not teleportation, but little things that aren't forbidden, but aren't mentioned as ever having been done.

*Of course, the main character's sister took the oath at a very young age and spent her ordeal teleporting from planet to planet (very complex spells and math) on spells she constructed in minutes and to destinations that were unknown. She traveled out a thousand billion lightyears from Earth--outside even what Wizardry knew of the universe**--to oversee the awakening of a new intelligent lifeform and to keep it from choosing death.

**Which is not to say that there isn't more Wizardry out there, but the two (or more) groups have never had contact therefore are not informed of each others' existence, even by The Powers That Be (who may as well be gods, but admit that even they don't know everything***).

***The transcendental pig (whom the Powers call "one of the universe's little jokes") might though. But he doesn't share. Also the only creature capable of teleporting without needing a spell (even the Powers must resort to Wizardry when in a physical form).
