As long as he is civil, I do not have issues, when he is not, I tend to ignore it until he becomes profane (though not always), sometimes there are attempts to defuse, and you can generally see how those turn out, can't you...

Yes, you poke him and he pokes back and the rest of us roll our eyes at both of you.

Shadowrun has frickin' nanites that tear you to pieces from the INSIDE. Shadowrun has FUSION power. Shadowrun has colonies on Mars. I don't think the technology for a lightsaber is that ridiculous for the tech level (other than power source issues, which are conveniently solved by the level of technology that Cyberarms require no power packs whatsoever). There are folks using existing technology right now that are creating lightsaber prototypes because they have far too much time on their hands. And it wouldn't really have that much of a tremendous impact on the game, especially if the power level of the lightsaber is limited based on reasonable technology limits.

Agreed... it is not all that outrageous in my opinion...

Re: Dr. Funkenstein: Posting to prod him makes YOU the troll, not him. It's pretty obvious to everyone else. I don't care how much of an elegant facade you paint around it, the gentleman's course to incivility is restraint, not bullying about.

That is your opinion, and you are certainly entitled to it... Not worth arguing about really, in my opinion... but if I am reacting to HIS posts, then who is the Troll really? Especially when it is obvious that he is the instigator...

But like I said, not really worth arguing about... all I ask is for restraint in his (or anyone's) choice of language... that is not really all that hard in my opinion... As I said previously (to you if I remember correctly); There are no consequences on the Internet (nothing real anyway), individuals are free to act as badly as they desire, but that does not mean that the recipient of such bad behavior has to just roll over and accept it... If I start throwing profanity and calling people names just because I am afraid to admit that someone may have a differing opinion, I would expect to have someone call me on it (and if so, Please do)... and I make every attempt to not act in such manner (I like to thnk that I generally succeed in that)... I truly expect to receive the same consideration... if I do not, then I call them on it...

I have no problems arguing my point, or discussing options, even if I vehemently disagree with the proposed argument... that does not give me the right to spesw obscenities at you because of the disagreement...

Just my two cents...

Bloodline Laserblade

Still in the testing phase, the Lasersaber is destined to be the melee weapon of the future.

Conceal: NA
Reach: +2
Damage: 15M
Weight: 4.5/6 (Sword/Battery Pack)
Cost: Not Yet In Distribution
Duration: 1 minute (15 minutes with battery pack attached.)

>>>>>Someday this may be a cool weapon...but not yet. The problems are numerous. First off, it works by bouncing a laser beam between the hilt and a mirror mounted on the end of a high strength steel rod. Although this works great in theory all it takes is a hard hit to the mirror or rod in order to knock everything out of alignment. This also means you can't stab with it because all you'll be doing it poking them with the butt of the mirror. Second, the damn thing is unwieldy. It's not bad if you're using it without the pack but once you get an extension cord running out the base of the hilt everything starts to suck. Third is that you almost have to train with it to use it right. Strength isn't a factor: actually, the harder you hit the more chance you have of messing up the alignment, mirrors, etc. You have to give the laser enough time to burn everything out of the way so you don't have that problem. This means you have to hit slowly, and we all know the word slow isn't in a street sam's vocabulary. And last, a troll can do a hell of a lot more damage with a monosword then they could ever do with this thing.<<<<<

He turned it on, asked me to hold it, and then took a swipe at me with a monosword. My reflexes kicked in and I blocked and the fragging monosword BLEW APART as soon as it hit the beam. I quickly realized that this weapon required its user to take completely different approach to melee combat. Sure you have to train, but......the monosword BLEW APART! And, by the way, not everybody is a troll.<<<<<

Now that is interesting... I like it, but you are right... give it a bit of time, it will get better...

In this case, he is not. I refer to post number 41 in this thread where you are clearly baiting him. You have been exhibiting this pattern for several days, and I've even called you out on it, which you have summarily dismissed. No one asked you to be their white knight. No one asked you to doggedly pursue anyone on these forums on a personal crusade. I get it... someone is "WRONG" on the Internet, but that doesn't mean you have to be the one to point this out. Let it go, for the love of God, Allah, and the Great Ghost. Place each other on an ignore list if you have to.

Thanks for the input there... Will take it under consideration...
When the crusade is personal you don't need an invitation to join... But I hear you...

Besides, ocassionally, Doc. has a nugget or two of pure gold wisdom, so why would I want to deprive myself of that enlightenment... no need to ignore him...

Honstly I'm not convinced by the design. I see several fundamental flaws in the design as proposed.

The first is thermal management. No mirror is perfect, and even with 99% reflection if the laser is at full outpout the end one is going to heat fast .

The second is alignment. The rod is going to vibrate a bit - no material is perfectly rigid - and if the return is not well aligned with the handle something is not going to like it. Like the handle itself, or your hand.

Maybe with a low power "pilot/detection" laser "sheat" around the way of a high power single emitter that goes to full power, pulsed mode as soon as something is detected in the way ? This get rid of the awkward rod/mirror combo.

I think the only way to make a "real" lightsaber in Shadowrun is by magic.

What about the part of Street Magic that says that you cannot summon weapons?

The good thing about my Mage Blade Spell is it is a mana construct. There is nothing material about it. Yes there is a force, just like a Physical Barrier... only sharper. biggrin.gif

You haven't reacted to HIS posts in about a half dozen replies, now. When you're so eager to call someone else a troll and instigator, all while poster after poster is asking you to drop it, that should be something of a hint that maybe you've crossed a line. This should particularly be the case if people are doing so in -- roundabout -- defense of Doc fucking Funkenstein, and you are still the one coming off as the bad guy in the exchange.

Black jacks laser sword is how I engineered a light sabre and the wee age of ten. Memories.
Down side of the design is the second it comes out of alignement your wrist bursts into flames or gets chopped off.

With a mono sword the pointy end goes in the other man..

Hmm but there is an option for a honey comb cyclinder to cut down on flex of the support for the laser sword...

strong gravitational field

...When did ShadowRun invent (technological) gravitational control?

I'd also like to point out that gravitational fields are omnidirectional and don't work like that: it'd make the plasma collapse into the hilt (or fountain out of it).

So what do y'all think about a extendable baton with custom look and anchored/quickened/sustained elemental aura light on it?
Stahlseele
It would more or less look the part at least.
Of course, it'd be not very effective, aside
being used against HMHVV folks and such ^^

That certainly works and is pretty close to what I was suggesting originally. Another idea is just creating a variant of that one sword in Arsenal that you can roll up and hide in your clothes. Just make it so it "rolls up" into the hilt or something when you stop pushing a button. Or whatever else works for you.
McCummhail
The bloodline laser blade from Blackjack's page is how I went in the past when players REALLY wanted one.
I added custom rules to account for possible misalignment as well, because GM don't have to be 100% kind.

Also, No More Heroes used this very design for their laser blades. They looked pretty sweet there.
