I'm curious here: why do you award karma each session if they cannot spend it? Wouldn't it be easier to only give a big chunk at the end of the run?

For me because it's easier to track, and because there is no preset amount to be issued.

Wow, sounds like I hand out way too much...

I usually hand out 2-4 per session for role play stuff (I break it down for myself, but not for the players), then another 4 to 6 at the end of the mission depending on the number of goals and threat level. Most of our missions are 2 to 4 sessions and have at least 2 goals/objectives (sometimes more).

Here is a typical break out:
Session: 3 points
Brave/Smart: 1
Good roleplay: 1
(one of the other 3 individual awards): 1

Mission: 5 + last session
Survival: 1
Objectives: 2+
Challange/Threat: 2+

The session awards are handed out individually so not everyone is getting the same award. Better roleplayers and more active players earn more. The awards are handed out secretly (via e-mail usually).

The mission award may be given out verbally or through the last-session email individually but everyone gets the same amount from the mission part.

So it's not uncommon for the team to earn (for a 3 session mission) 14-ish points each. We tend to play weekly (more or less).

Hah, I wish we got anywhere near that.

We get 1 for mission complete, 1 for survival, and then individual awards

edit: And I see people saying how SR4a is supposed to give more than that. Looking at SR4a page 269, you get 1 for survival, 1 for 2/3 objectives complete, then the rest are pretty much GM discretion. Even "adventure was extra hard" is something the GM can say "no that was just an average run".

Exactly.
