Yeah, the cost of skillwires in 4a make taking them at CharGen not such a good deal, especially as noted when you can get cracked versions at 1/10 the price. Even if you have skillwires from MBW, you are probably wanna wait until in-game before you start forking out for skillsofts galore.
I can see their uses in-game though. A hacker or rigger could get some of the more exotic Pilot skills via skillwires, or as noted a mage who is taking a bit of cyber anyway can get some of his secondary non-magic skills up to scratch without having to "waste" that karma he has earmarked for initiation. And in-game you can get betaware (or perhaps even deltaware) level 5 or 6 skillwires and an expert system for a reasonable price and relatively cheap essence cost, without having to spring 5BP for Restricted Gear ...
Skillwires top out at Rating 5. And Activesofts top out at Rating 4.

I often wonder if they changed the prices due to it being to cheap or if they envisioned it as something that a runner would use to compensate for 1 or 2 missing complementary skills.
It really kills the Wageslave turned runner archetype though due to extreme prices.
No combat skills
Average Attributes
Bioware to boost attributes
Skillwire & Expert System
Wageslave skills depending on job [Office Economist / Lawyer / Drone Mechanic / Corporate Secretary etc]
ALL needed skills for actual combat stealth and survival as software.
Skills is often what differs a runner from the average joe on the street and the skillsammy can be fun.

True, TJ, but those aren't really big hurdles. Skillsoft 4(+1) isn't much worse than a real skill (usually 5+2, possibly as much as 7+2?) in terms of the total DP (attribs and bonuses really water it down).
Instead of limiting the rating per se (or perhaps in addition to), it would be nice if there were various tradeoffs: (yes) no Edge use of any kind, maybe increased glitch chance, etc. And then you could bring the price back down a little.

At 3000/rating on skillsofts, I would much rather skillwires have a max rating of 6 with a max total skillsoft rating equal to the skillwire rating rather than skillwire rating * 2.

hmm, cant skillsofts use program options? Adding negative qualities to bring down the price?
Market specific hardware skill that gets gremlins on other brands due to software being hardwired with instructions for a specific hardware?

Not anymore, you cracked it.

Yeah, it is a bit stupid, but that is how it works (I think

).
When the rules don't explicitly say something, AND, that something is utterly ludicrous and illogical?
I don't do it / worry abotu it / whatever.

You can also get around the degration fees (after you got a pirated copy) by setting up a couple agents running on a couple spare coms whose only purpose is to patch other programs. Add in a programing suite and your golden.

Well, bugger. So it does.
Unfortunately, SR4A still says 10,000¥ times rating, and my copy of SR4A is more recent than my copy of Arsenal (12/6/2011 for SR4A, 7/2/2011 for Arsenal). PDFs bought direct from Catalyst, and thus kept updated, in both cases.

Arsenal predates SR4A, which changed things. They were Rx3000 in SR4, so Arsenal is just restating that.
