Personally, I'd be more comfortable with allowing Ballistics to add to weapon skill when calculating how many actions a character can spend aiming (after a certain range; perhaps past 100m). So, if you have Rifles 6 and Ballistics 6, instead of 3 actions, you could aim for 6. It's rough, but I think it has potential.

Anyway, personally, short arms and long arms as the only two firearm skills makes a lot more sense to me in relation to the rest of the canon skills. Spell casting, after all, only has 2, and they're plenty powerful. Mundanes could use an extra bit of help. What I would personally prefer, however, is splitting everything else up as mucha s firearms are currently, which allows for a greater degree of character customization.

I noticed a few people here are in favor a big rewrite of this sort of thing, and since I'm working on just that, I'd really appreciate some ideas. You know, considering the thread I posted on the just that ended up being Austere responding to me responding to him responding to me for three pages before it died. But anyway, I'll be getting another thread up about that some time soon with everything consolidated.

I'm sure you're relieved to know that I won't be responding to that thread very much. biggrin.gif

It seems we're down to personal preference here with the specializations and skills, and that's fine by me. I can live with people's personal preferences being different than mine. Barely.

Hehe ...
I realized when I read your words that that was pretty much how I felt, and why I had been arguing so hard. To anyone that read my posts (you poor, poor souls wink.gif), I apologize if I didn't make it clear enough that this was mostly my opinion.

Heck, were I playing in a game that allowed a "sniping" specialization, that probably wouldn't bother me - I'd choose a different specialization anyways, most likely, and probably wouldn't even choose a sniper-type character.

So, Austere Emancipator, I'm sory if I seemed to jump too harshly down your throat.

oh, and Arethusa - I like your idea of how long someone can aim. smile.gif Kindof limiting for starting characters; perhaps say that for every point of TN decrease that's higher than their skill in Ballistics, they need to spend TWO actions aiming? (this woudl allow a beginner with enough time to still do well ... semi unrealistic but currently allowed.)

No worries, mate. You can tell I'm cool by the fact that I actively back down instead of attack. smile.gif I'm always pleased when these little misunderstanding-episodes (ie I misunderstand something and start writing incoherently, even more so than usual) end like this, instead of in a (usually one-sided) flame war as sometimes happens.
