Neraph
A few of you already know this, but I'm going on hiatus for a while. I'm shipping out to MCRD in San Diego, California early tomorrow morning. As things are right now I'm set up to be 57-11, CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Defense) Reserve, and as a result will not be able to post much for the next 7-10 months.

I will be back.
Faelan
Enjoy being a Hollywood Marine wink.gif Good luck. Remember everything the Drill Instructors do is a mind game to break you. Shut your mouth, do as you are told, don't laugh, and you should be just fine. After boot camp enjoy shipping out to Fort Leonardwood (Lonelywood) so you can get gassed by every agent known to man. On the plus side by the time you are done with MOS school you will be immune to the effects of tear gas.

Take care of yourself and watch your back, marine.

Semper Fidelis Marine... Good Luck.

Don't forget your towel, don't panic and you'll be back in no time

Wear the uniform well, and stay safe.

Good luck. Don't let the bastards get you down. Remember that boot camp is designed to allow an average guy to succeed, and your cadre isn't trying to screw you over. Screw with you and your mind, yes, but it's not personal and it's designed to make dirtbags quit, not make YOU quit. And hell, shooting guns and blowing up crap while being paid every day is a ball. Enjoy every part you can.
Critias
Best of luck. Stay invisible, don't be first or last to finish anything, do what you're told without hesitation, and never forget they're not allowed to kill or injure you in training (only hurt). You'll be fine.

Thank you for your service.
mrslamm0
Best of luck and be safe chummer.

[...] it's designed to make dirtbags quit, [...]

Allow me to take personal exception to this statement.

In the summer of 1989, I enlisted in the U.S. Army and reported to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, for training as a combat Engineer, 12B.

I was not able to complete my training, and received a Chapter 11 ELS ("Entry Level Separation").

I was not and am not a "dirtbag". I have an anxiety/stress disorder. If I could make just one wish, change just one thing in my own life - it would have been to succeed in the Army.

Thus, I take offense at the suggestion that it's "dirbags" that BCT for any service is supposed to weed out. Well-meaning but less-capable persons are actually at the top of the list of folks BCT is supposed to weed out of the service.

Don't get shot, i always liked reading your optimization.

I guess I'll have to come out of retirement to hold up your end of the RAWlbook.

I would say it's about as realistic as the firearms rules. smile.gif

But threads about unrealistic firearms rules got boring three weeks after the release of 1st Ed, here's the chance for something new biggrin.gif

I went through most of the MOS level training for NBC since I was an NBC Instructor amongst other things, and I don't think you would ever really want to play realistic NBC in a game.

I think that NBC shouldn't be in the game at all. Do ANY of you think that if a 'Runner team used that shit, that the whole NATION would be after their asses? If they could get a nuke to go off then I can see the following:

Ares: You know guys, we absolutely hate you with every fiber of our being...
Aztechnology: We believe that statement is the only thing that we will ever agree with you on.
Ares: We want those 'Runners very, very, dead
Aztechnology: We stand corrected. That is two things that we agree on.

There is NO positive way to spin a nuke going off except for an insect spirit invasion, and even then it was seen very dimly. Biological weapons are another of those things that is almost impossible to give a positive spin (again if you're got an insect spirit invasion, then a bio weapon that works only on them is OK). Chemical weapons... you MIGHT have a small chance of that being swept under the rug.

Thanks for serving, so those of us who were in the Air Force didn't have to get out where the bullets are wink.gif

Also, military service is definitely a deal that pays back the more you put into it. 10 years from boot you won't remember all the stupid crap they did either smile.gif

I'll tell that to the 60 thousand homeless veterans. They clearly didn't put enough into it.
Critias
Jesus, people. We can't even have a "good luck in the service, stay safe" thread without it turning into what, like, three arguments at once? This is why we can't have nice things.
almost normal
People on a public forum have differing opinions on social issues like military service and the handling of veterans?

ALERT THE MEDIA!
Lionhearted
It's not a matter of opinions, but rather respecting a community member and not belittering a "goodbye for now" post with arguments that frankly don't belong on a gaming forum.
Neko Asakami
@Neraph: Good luck out there, come home safe, and listen to those fuckers who yell at you. Their job isn't to kill you, but keep you from getting killed. Listen will enough and they might just succeed.

@Almost Normal: Seriously, for once, do us all a favor and STFU. This isn't about your opinion or anyone else's (I'm a peace-loving hippy myself, but I still respect those willing to put their lives on the line for what they believe in), this is about Neraph and wishing him health and safety in his future. If you can't do that, then don't post.

Yeah, I'm quite the asshole for bringing up the DODs own numbers for how poorly they take care of their own. I hope the OP stays safe, but your bullshit attempt to paint me as a bad guy for refuting jingoistic claims is just weak, regardless of your (laughable) self proclaimed status as a hippie.

It's not that you're a bad guy for bringing up the point, you're a bad guy for bringing it up right here, and right now. It's like going to a little kid's birthday party and, just before it's time to blow out the candles and eat some cake, ranting about childhood obesity and screeching about the dangers of diabetes.

There's a time and a place to bring up this sort of thing, but on a farewell thread to someone who's about to enlist, it's a terrific time and place to just bite your fucking tongue for once.
Adarael

He made a statement that was inappropriate. From his post, I don't think he meant it to be offensive though. It wasn't much of a rant, if that was a rant at all. I do not think he meant any disrespect.

If that was actually a physical social encounter, I think Almost Normal's statement would be greeted with chilly silence and dirty looks if he actually said it loudly. No italics, no bold, no caps, kind of a normal tone given that this is a forum thread. So I think such a statement would probably be answered with shrugs, sighs and eye-rolls if we were at Neraph's physical sending off party. Come on guys, it is not as if it is a half page rant or something.

@Neraph: Good luck, stay safe. Basic is only the beginning, worse is on the way. biggrin.gif

The annual survey found that 67,495 veterans were homeless in the United States on a single night in January 2011

I can post in different colors too. I'm sorry you think warning a board member to look after himself -because his new job sure won't- bothers you. Personally I'd like to see Neraph make it through in one piece, and maybe pick up a skillset or two. When your overbearing sense of patriotism leads you to attempt to blind others to reality, you're part of the problem. There's nothing noble about hiding the truth, there's nothing gracious about silencing factual information, and there's no 'trolling' involved in hoping a new guy doesn't make the same mistake tens of thousands who came before him did.
Neko Asakami
The thing you're missing is that no one has disagreed with you about your facts. Most of us are quite aware of the sad state of veterans affairs in this country. What we are saying is that this isn't the time or place to bring that up, pure and simple.

I am posting in a different color because I am a moderator and am posting as such, and I do consider your original post to be trolling, and your subsequent posts to be inflammatory.

As per our normal procedure the moderator team will be reviewing this thread and acting accordingly.

Good luck there.

And this thread is good reminder how to act there. There is no place or time to challenge existing status quo or bring truth to everyone see. Because if you do that not only your closest commanders have failed , but also their commanders... And those try hard to not admit any wrong doing.
That happened when i was doing my duty in another country, but it is same in every army. Problem never exists, if it exists it is deal in "family" but they newer admit it. If DireRadiant wants to ban me from this post, so it be. But while almost normal maybe didn't have right timing to bring veterans problems to light, but your act is exact example what it will be in army.

He will probably get a chuckle from it; it would not be very Dumpshock like if it was all roses.

Neraph made his decision, and I'm sure he heard about homeless veterans before because it's difficult not to have heard about the issue. He'll find out whether it was the right choice soon enough (and if not, meh. Successful careers don't have to be straight lines), no need to discuss those choices how in absence.

Honestly I did.

Well, I was supposed to leave the 10th, but the Headquarters didn't finish my Expressed Dependent Waivers, so it looks like I'll be going the 17th instead. At least I got a free day's worth of food out of it. I already posted my farewell on FB and already changed my voicemail... Bah.
Adarael
San Diego is pretty damn nice, whenever they let you off base. wink.gif
Neraph
There's no "off base" until the 13-week boot camp is complete. Then I get 10 days of leave to do whatever I want as long as I report for MCT (Marine Combat Training), which is roughly a month. Then I go to my MOS school, which is another 3 months, but up to 6 if I miss my class. So all told I'm looking at between 7 and 10 months off.
