Ack, this time already? Here is Tamarind's sheet, with karma thoroughly (if somewhat randomly) spent. Only added one purchase, a new drone, Kaa.

(Been a bit longer than I expected getting back here -- our 17 year old cat has had increasing issues for years but the end finally arrived today, and it took a bunch of time and focus for the past five or so days. The path of totality for the eclipse was only an hour from us, but I ended up not making the drive, that morning I booked the euthanasia appointment and ended up spending the afternoon with our cat instead. Sad she is gone, but it has also been a tiring journey so looking forward to having more schedule flexibility)
Thanee
Sorry for your loss!

No rush! I just put it up early, so there is plenty time to get the links to the sheets in, so they are easily found on top of the thread.

@beta

The loss of a beloved pet is always hard. All the best to you and your family.
Tecumseh
Yes, my condolences as well. I'm a cat person and know how dear they can be.

Glad you're back though.
Gilga
My condolences Beta.
Gilga
Lovely story Beta.

Sorry this got so long, I know that is a pain to read. I hadn't been in the mood for writing in so long and suddenly it was flowing, so I just went with it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Quite the opposite, I would say.

I'm happy that this could provide you with a bit of inspiration.

All the little stories were fun to read. Thank you! smile.gif

The prelude was fun. I'd be tempted to write another but Thanee said only one. (For now, perhaps).
Thanee
QUOTE
Bobby, do you want to get scanned or just fly over the border

That is something that might also cause some problems.

If Bobby flies in without the scan, he is - effectively - not in the city. So, he needs to avoid being scanned anywhere for the whole stay (not impossible, certainly, but maybe limiting).

Bye
Thanee
Tecumseh
I thought that might be the case, but perhaps it won't matter much if we're off at the ranch.

Of course, following the trail might lead us to the urban parts of the city. I'm sure Jack will have a plan.

Hardware test to make the Erika small enough to fit in a leg smuggling compartment?

According to the book, a cyberdeck is typically the size of a small book, so not that large, I guess. Should be fine. smile.gif

Thanee
Jack_Spade
Yeah, starting out, Bobby would have gone for the risky smuggling. By now he knows that it's much more convenient to work with materials at hand and bribe officials when the dust has settled.

The problem is more that we have a hard time limit.
Thanee
Yeah, prep time is definitely limited. wink.gif

Ally spirits are summoned and bound just like any other spirit (plus some extra steps, obviously), I wouldn't trust Ghostwalker to make an exception for those. wink.gif

Creating Watchers or Homunculi is fine, though.

Bye
Thanee
Gilga
Well they are constructed like watchers, I think. There wasn't a Trouble spirit out there before AM created it, but I don't contest them being illegal.

The Ally Conjuration ritual works exactly like Summoning and Binding (see Street Grimoire p. 200-202).

QUOTE
CONJURING AN ALLY
The ritual for summoning an ally must be performed in a magical lodge with a Force at least equal to the ally being summoned. Follow summoning rules (p. 300, SR5). Immediately after summoning, the spirit must be bound using standard binding rules (p. 300, SR5). Calculate Drain as if summoning and binding a spirit of the ally’s Force.

Now - obviously - Trouble must have been created differently (because, otherwise AM wouldn't even be able to do that), but in the end the result is still the same (or should be), meaning, Trouble is a spirit that is bound to AM (and can perform bound spirit services and so on). I doubt that the "inquisition" in Denver would consider the nuances here, as that is clearly not how it normally works.

Or in other words... it is probably not worth the risk of finding out how they would react to that.

Beta
Indeed, from the viewpoint GW is espousing, an ally is enslaved for life, not just hours or weeks, so arguably a worse offense (if you don't allow that the spirit may have agency in the agreement)
Gilga
Its alright, Trouble would seat this one out.

It may vary by GM, but my understanding (based on things in the 5e and 6e Denver adventures) is that there is no "detect summoned spirit" field running. Rather it is more like possessing a illegal firearm. If you are careless enough to get spotted with it, someone may report it to people who could do something about it, if you use it in the process of committing a crime the response is apt to be more harsh, and if you are caught with it you will face additional charges (very serious charges in this case).

BUT the thing about an ally spirit is that they can hang out elsewhere and be called to you quickly if you need them. Let Trouble have fun exploring the mountains (on one side of the border or other and find some places where there is good cover for astral travel (dense forest or bush, for example). Then if AM really needs Trouble, she calls them. Just don't have Trouble around all of the time.

That said, between spells and hacking, AM can do lots already! And if she can set up a temporary lodge she could even conjure Watcher spirits for the purposes of astral scouting.

Definitely not. smile.gif

2 hits on an Assensing test will tell an observer that Trouble is an ally spirit, though, which is the biggest risk here, probably.

Bye
Thanee
Tecumseh
Yeah, it's a risk-reward calculation. Trouble is certainly helpful, but he is also a liability in this instance.

Ghostwalker has a strong affinity with the spirits of Denver. We should assume than any astral entities are aligned with his interests, which includes reporting the presence of any non-free spirits.

I agree that AM is quite capable even without Trouble.

QUOTE (Thanee @ Apr 15 2024, 08:47 AM) *
You still need to decide on that smuggling compartment, whether you want to have it or not.
It is illegal, but well-hidden, obviously. Could help move some things across district borders inside Denver as well, if there is a need for that.

You should also list the relevant gear you want to take with you (no need to list every small, legal item; you can assume that you have those on you, as long as they are easily carried or worn) and which SIN you are using, of course.

Do you want to take Raven's alchemy with you? Who will take what? She has two Atomizers for the Increase Reflexes spell. The rest are wrapped-up bonbons, as usual, color/taste-coded for the spells and with some marks to know which are the ones with the higher potency.

I thought Ghostwalker took down all the sector borders. Since the UCAS, CAS, PCC, etc. have been kicked out, it's all Ghostwalker's fiefdom now with no need for borders. I think the sectors still exist as political districts, but I'm pretty sure the sector borders are gone. I suppose they could have left the sensor network in place so maybe we have to be mindful of those scans. We'll start off in the old Sioux sector.

The smuggling compartment sounds like a good idea but, again, there's the risk-reward. I'm not too concerned about the risk, but what's the potential reward (i.e. what would we be putting in it)? Tamarind's drones are mostly for surveillance and recon; they're not gunships so there's not much objectionable about them. We already have a way for the cyberdeck to enter. The preparations are mostly Detection/Health/Illusion (in other words, not Combat) so I'm not sure those are contraband, unless there's a sense that they're Restricted because foci and formulae are. But spellcasting isn't Restricted by default, so why would alchemical preparations be?

Mato could put his rifle in the smuggling compartment, but to me it seems optional. I suppose a smuggling compartment might be nice on the way back, in case we're bringing anything with us.

Should we see if Razak can get us a Bulldog so we can bring Toothless along? Or a Roadmaster, ha.

Yes, he did! smile.gif

Talking about the "new" (not really new) 19 districts of Denver. These are called "semi-autonomous", and there are checks (automated) taking place between them (but, considering, this is all fairly new still, you don't have to expect any sophisticated security measures there; they are focusing on the outside borders first, obviously).

QUOTE

If anything would be restricted, it would be Combat/Manipulation (like in SR4A the fetishes for those categories were restricted, and the others were not), and the only Manipulation spell there is Gecko Crawl. So, yeah, those should be fully legal.

This is in relation to my 2nd last post, about traveling with a fake ID because it has licenses.

There are no rules, so far as I know, for getting licenses for a valid SIN! Presuably she could have weapons permits, and even a private detectives license or drone security license or something, but there are only rules for attaching those to fake IDs. Hence why she is on her fake ID.

Also, I had not invested in a license for every restricted item. Now I'm wondering if she should be having one to cover her RCC in particular (an expensive restriced piece of gear), and what license that would be?
Thanee
The first sentence of fake licences pretty much sums it up, I think.

QUOTE
Fake license: For those who can’t or won’t go through the standard legal channels, fake licenses are available for all kinds of restricted items and activities.

This kind of implies that there are legal channels to get licenses. So, as long as it makes sense (for someone working at a security company), a legal license should be available (probably costs some sort of fee, but that would be pretty neglectable and therefore be covered by your monthly costs of living, I suppose).

QUOTE
Items with no letter next to their availability don’t require licenses. Items that are Forbidden have no license available. Licenses, therefore, are for Restricted items. Each type of item/activity permission requires a separate license. Things that require licenses include hunting (bow and rifle), possession of a firearm, concealed carry of a firearm (separate license), spellcasting, and any Restricted gear or augmentations, etc.

As for fake licenses, that has always been quite vague.

I would probably just go with something like "RCC license" or "rigging license" for this type of thing.

Do we have what we bought in Texas written down somewhere? I didn't move any of it to Tamarind's sheet, and I don't even remember what weapons we bought.

Thank you Thanee! I've added the firing platforms to the SIS resources listed on our Redmond HQ page on Obsidian Portal. (Those were team purchases, and will be available when Tamarind is away. And I assume that we stash them somewhere fairly hidden in our Redmond offices rather than in the house -- if others would rather have them in the house I can move the notes over to the Bellevue location). Any anyway, not trying to take those into the FRFZ!

I've put the RCC from Texas on Tamarind's sheet, along with the software that came with it. Then I put her old RCC onto the HQ page, just after the firing platforms. She already had the Encryption program and the new one came with that, so I've said that extra copy is loaded on the spare RCC.

But looking through there is a good reminder, we should take along our high end camera. Never know when it might be useful.

To answer Mato's question off play:
The Duchess likes the book, because you can read it again and again and find things you missed before. wink.gif (That and I was looking for a culturally significant book for a Spanish noble woman)
Tecumseh
I haven't read the book my understanding is that lots of little stories add up to one big story, similar to how a hive of bees is composed of many individuals that form a greater collective.

Mato would wonder about the appeal to a woman who was already the Duchess of Sevilla even prior to her engagement to his Lordship, Sir Thomas Pike. Mato might speculate about the allure of a life of relative anonymity to a person like that, i.e. to just be one of the bees. Perhaps there is no interest, but it is interesting to think about.

As an aside, I really liked the Duchess' full name: Maria Josefina Isabela Marta Alfonsa Elena Ludovica Carlotta de Borbón y Parade. I'm pretty sure I cribbed it and used it in a different game a few years back.

Beta
I finally updated Tamarind's character sheet.

One new purchase: Kaa, a Festo Sewer Snake drone (rigger 5, pg 132) with upgraded pilot and sensor (could add a taser or something in the future, or technically even a drone arm? But later). She's still sitting on over 80knY but I'm just not inspired to figure out what rating of items at what cost in what timeline she could have aquired, and compromised on one new drone without worrying about all of that.

Going by the table in Coyotes p. 8, I would say this transport costs 10,000¥. smile.gif

Two border crossings with 4 individuals (no trolls) and about 200 kg of cargo (guesstimate) -> 500¥ each
About 2,000 km overland travel distance -> 4,000¥
"No questions asked" cargo or personnel -> 5,000¥
Risk Multiplier -> 1.0 (Normal)

There might be an extra fee for the short notice and lack of preparation time.

Bye
Thanee
Tecumseh
Ahh, Coyotes. I get to use it, oh, every-other year or so. But when I need it I'm glad that it's there.

That sounds like a good number. I bet Blackhawk gives a discount, perhaps offsetting the short notice, for a fun job.
Thanee
QUOTE
He doesn't like sitting sideways and how the forces of acceleration were concentrated on a smaller surface area.

While I had the same image of every military cargo plane or APV in any movie ever in mind, I don't really think the seats will be sideways, but rather angled towards the front.

With the speed these things are going, they pretty much have to, I think.

I made the seats able to rotate between two positions now. They can be sideways, so the passengers can face each other, or towards the front. That sounds like a good feature. smile.gif

The Black Sunshine is heavily customized, though, so maybe that is not a standard feature. wink.gif

I'd missed spending the 30 knowledge karma from the last run, but have added that into Tamarind's character sheet now (nothing impactful here, other than maybe Sioux Sign Language for while on the Banshee. Basically bumped a lot of things by 1 point, and picked up Seattle Politics at 2).
Gilga
.
Thanee
Yep. smile.gif

You are moving at something like 300m/s, so even with extended range, you are moving out of range really fast.

It's not a serious problem or anything like that, just a bit annoying. wink.gif

I reread the post and got it now. Thanks for answering anyway.
I had never tried to peek through an airplane before with this spell, and all the previous times I used in SR, I was stationary.
Thanee
As for assensing Razak, you need to help me out here.

I don't know what he is supposed to have. biggrin.gif

Bye
Thanee
Jack_Spade
Razak is a ki adept as well - second lvl. Initiate with a strong focus on guns and stealth. A classic sharpshooter - favors revolvers and burst capable precision rifles.

He is in his late fourties, but healthy and energetic enough to appear 10 years younger. His hair is black and always close cropped. His face is sunburned and a bunch of small scars mar his left side where he had a near fatal encounter with a mountain lion.

If you assense him you usually find him assessing right back.
Tecumseh
For what it's worth, I didn't know any of that either. This is the first time we've met Razak ICly. It's kinda cool that it's finally happening.
Thanee
Kinda funny, actually. I really thought you guys must have all met him a few times in the past. wink.gif

Bye
Thanee
Gilga
I think he texted us once or twice in previous episodes.
Tecumseh
Well I'm sure we've met him in-world before - Bobby and Tamarind for certain - but it's never come up in an IC thread until now. Up to this point he's only been on comms, tossing work to us occasionally.

I actually don't have a super-solid story about how Mato hit Razak's radar. Probably some of the Wildcats training Mato gave Razak a head's up that there was some rich kid with more cyber than sense floating around, and could he make use of a tool like that? Razak probably considered him disposable asset and sent him to Seattle to if it would work out. Mato likely thought that sounded like good fun.
